Ex-champ Gatti found dead in Brazil

Former boxing champion Arturo Gatti, one of the most exciting fighters of his generation, was found dead in a hotel room in the seaside resort of Porto de Galihnas in Brazil early yesterday. Police investigator Edilson Alves said it was unclear how the 37-year-old former junior welterweight champ died. Gatti arrived on Friday with his Brazilian wife Amanda and 1-year-old son. Mavericks re-sign Kidd for 3 years
The Dallas Mavericks re-signed Jason Kidd, five days after owner Mark Cuban confirmed he was returning. Kidd agreed to a three-year deal worth more than $25 million. Kidd, 37, has averaged 13.8 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 9.2 assists in 15 seasons . . . The Portland Trail Blazers signed restricted free agent forward Paul Millsap to an offer sheet. Cubs put Soto on DL with side strain
The Chicago Cubs placed catcher Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to July 7, with a strained left oblique muscle. They recalled outfielder Sam Fuld from Triple A Iowa. Soto was injured while taking batting practice Wednesday . . . Lefthanded reliever Alan Embree had surgery to repair a broken right leg suffered Friday on a line drive off the bat of Atlanta Braves’ Martin Pardo. Peirsol breaks Lochte’s world mark
Aaron Peirsol broke the world record in the 200-meter backstroke at the US national championships in Indianapolis.
