1974: The jinx is pure Evel
Sports Illustrated photo
The late daredevil Evel Knievel gained fame for jumping his motorcycle over rows of cars and buses. When he decided to try to jump over Snake River Canyon in Idaho with a combination cycle and rocket, he probably didn't need SI's help in failing. But here he was, on the Sept. 2 cover. On Sept. 8, he failed miserably, parachuting 600 feet to the bottom of the canyon. Amazingly, he suffered only minor injuries.
