Vet: Injured horse has 50 percent chance of survival

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—A veterinarian says a horse that broke down during an undercard race for the Kentucky Oaks has an injury similar to Barbaro's and has a 50 percent chance of survival.

The colt Chelokee was trained by Barbaro's trainer Michael Matz. He has won five of 10 lifetime starts, including the Barbaro Stakes last May at the Preakness.

Dr. Larry Bramlage, a vet at Rood and Riddle Hospital in Lexington, upgraded Chelokee's condition Saturday. He has a badly dislocated ankle that will require surgery, but no fracture as originally suspected. Bramlage said the injury will end the horse's career.

Barbaro won the 2006 Kentucky Derby but broke down in the Preakness and was later euthanized.
