No one injured as horse hops fence at Suffolk
A horse jumped the fence during the fourth race at Suffolk Downs yesterday, but no one in attendance was injured.
Beat The Heat, a 3-year-old who was a 5-2 favorite in the race, appeared to suffer an injury as he approached the stretch. As the distressed horse drifted toward the outside fence, jockey Winston Thompson dismounted. Thompson was not injured.
Beat The Heat then bounded over the fence that leads to the track maintenence area, which is not open to the public, and galloped through the maintenence parking lot toward the driveway as members of the starting gate crew pursued him.
The gate crew helped guide the horse off the driveway and soon corralled him in a parking lot behind Stop & Shop on the other side of the driveway, according to Christian Teja, the track's public relations director.
Beat The Heat was examined by a veteranarian at the track and found to have an ankle injury, which was stabilized.
The horse will continue to be evaluated. ![]()
