Cannons get the last word, corral Outlaws
DENVER - In a back-and-forth game, the Boston Cannons had the final say against the first-place Outlaws, coming away with a 17-16 win last night.
Sean Morris led the way for the Cannons (5-3) with three goals and three assists and Ryan Boyle and Paul Rabil each contributed three-goal efforts. Justin Smith tallied twice for the Cannons, including the winner at 13:31 of the fourth quarter.
Drew Westervelt paced the Outlaws (6-2), scoring six goals and finishing with eight points. He scored three goals in a span of 1 minute 34 seconds midway through the fourth quarter, giving Denver a 16-15 edge.
But Rabil scored unassisted at 11:34 to tie it and Morris set up Smith for the winner less than two minutes later.
Denver struck first in the see-saw battle, jumping out to a 3-0 lead before Kyle Sweeney got the Cannons started, scoring the first of three unanswered goals in a span of 1:35 late in the first quarter.
After Matt Brown put Denver up, 13-11, at 12:15 of the third quarter, the Cannons answered with four straight goals to go up, 15-13, 4:44 into the final quarter. That’s when Westervelt struck with three straight scores, but the Cannons had one more spurt left. ![]()
