BEIJING -- Twelve hours after the opening ceremony, Todd Bachman, 62, whose son-in-law is the coach of the US men's indoor volleyball team, was stabbed in an imperial tower just north of the Forbidden City. Bachman died from his wounds, while his wife, Barbara was also stabbed and left in serious condition.

The USOC today released a statment updating the status of Barbara Bachman:

"With her recovery progressing, Mrs. Barbara Bachman has departed Beijing via air ambulance and been transferred to a hospital in the United States. All three of her daughters, including Elisabeth McCutcheon, have also returned to the United States. Son-in-law Hugh McCutcheon, head coach of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Men's Volleyball Team, will remain in Beijing and return to his coaching duties beginning today.

'We are indebted to the physicians and caregivers at Peking Union Medical College Hospital who have done such a wonderful job providing Barbara with the medical care she needed,' Hugh McCutcheon said. 'We are also extremely appreciative of the support we have received from people here in Beijing, the United States, New Zealand and around the world. The prayers and support have been a source of strength for our family during this difficult time.'"
