Posted by Greg Lee, Globe Staff August 22, 2008 04:59 AM

The U.S. men's volleyball team advanced to the gold medal game with a hard-fought 25-22, 25-21, 25-27, 15-13 victory over Russia Friday afternoon at the Capital Gymnasium. With the win, the Americans secure their first men's volleyball medal since the bronze won at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. The gold medal game appearance is the first for the U.S. since the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, when they won the second of their two consecutive gold medals. They will play at noon on Sunday, August 24, against the winner of the Italy-Brazil match to be played later Friday afternoon.
