Women's Hockey: USA-Sweden semis updates

THIRD PERIOD

All over at Canada Hockey Place (or is it USA Hockey Place?). US women move on to gold game Thursday with 9-1 shallacking of Swedes.
USA with 46-12 shot advantage.

Uncle Sam's sisters make it 9-1 with another Lamoureux goal, her second of period, on a power play.

USA boosts lead to 8-1 when Stack sweeps in backhander at doorstep, following attempts by Zaugg and Chu.


Cameras here at Canada Hockey Place focusing on some forlorn Swedish fans in the stands. Disheartening day for the Three Crowns.


Weiland provides tip of Lawler slapper for 7-1 USA lead at 7:15. Swedish timeout didn't help much.

Lamoureux connects again for 6-1 lead at 5:59. Power-play goal. Lamoureux carries puck from goal line to top of right wing circle and snaps in sharp wrister. Beleagured Swedes call time out for meeting at bench.

Penalty-- Sweden, Winberg, hooking< 5:57.

Schaus in USA net to strart period.


SECOND PERIOD

Two periods complete. USA in command of 5-1 lead.
Shot total after 40:00 -- USA 26, SWE 9.

USA beatdown continues, Thatcher goal at 13:35 giving Yanks 5-1 lead. Lamoureux gets two quick shots at doorstep before Thatcher snaps loose puck over Martin's stick.

With 11:30 gone, USA's Cahow yet to re-enter action, but she is standing along Yanks' bench. Appears her pain has abated.

Swedes get on board at 9:34 with Winberg's goal mouth tap of original shot by Joransson. Moments before goal, USA's Cailtin Cahow felled by Jordansson slapper. US lead now 4-1.

Penalty USA -- Engstrom roughing Winberg, 8:17. Barely a push. Referee looking to hand Swedes a door prize.

USA's ticket to gold game all but punched with Cahow goal at 5:58 that makes it 4-0. Cahow connects with rising wrister to top right corner, Martin fanning on shot with catching glove.

US bumps it to 3-0 lead on Ruggiero goal at 3:22. Ex-Crimson star collects pass from Lamoureux deep on right wing and snaps 12-foot wrister to top right corner, glove side on helpless Martin.

Puck down here next 20:00

USA with 12-3 shot advantage in first period.

FIRST PERIOD

First 20:00 in books. Yanks well in control with 2-0 lead. Sweden can't sustain any offensive pressure.

Terrific bid by USA's Lawler at 18:45, but her goalmouth wrist shot near right post slides under GT Martin and goes out other side of crease.

Swedes barely able to keep puck in USA end during the 2:00 PP.,

14:27 -- Penalty, USA, Duggan trips Winberg.

USA out in front, 2-0, on Duggan power-play goal. Moments after getting crosschecked by Anderson in slot, roofs a Cahow rebound.

USA takes 1-0 lead at 7:14. Lamoureux makes sharp cut in off left wing, carrying a Potter pass, and finishes off with forehand stuff at top of crease.

Moments before US goal, crowd begins to chant, ''Let's go Sweden, let's go!'' Most of those chanting are wearing red-and-white Team Canada sweaters. Clearly, sore losers from USA's 5-3 beating on men's side last night.

Just about underway here at Canada Hockey Place,where the US Women will take on Sweden in the first of two semfinals here today.
If the Yanks win, they'll move on to the gold game against the winner of today's later match between Canada and Finland.
