NE Connection: Whitney was born in Boston, played prep school hockey at the Thayer Academy in Braintree (often paired up defensively with fellow NHLer and Boston College alum Brooks Orpik) and then went on to play his college career at Boston University.
Bio: Whitney was the fifth overall pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2002 NHL draft, which he entered after his junior year in college. He made his NHL debut on Oct. 31, 2005 and played with the Penguins until he was traded to the Anaheim Ducks right before the trade deadline in 2009. Whitney was named as an alternate for the Olympic team when it was announced Jan. 1 and activated to the roster Feb. 5 to replace injured Mike Komisarek.
