The opening ceremonies of the summer 2008 Beijing Olympic Games started and ended with a bang and a flash as fireworks lit up the sky.

At left, the delegations gathered at the center of the stadium during the ceremony, which began on 08/08/08 at 8:08 p.m. The show was supposedly the largest, opening extravaganza in Olympic history, which included some 30,000 fireworks.
