Road race honors fallen serviceman

The 15th and final US Marshal William F. Degan Memorial Road Race will be Sept. 23, with all events beginning and ending outside Veterans Memorial Stadium in Quincy.

The race has raised more than $400,000 over the years, money that has been donated to children's and community charities in Quincy and the South Shore. More than 2,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the event, which will include 5K and 10K races and a family fun walk.

The event was started in memory of Bill Degan, a US marshal and former lieutenant colonel in the Marine Corps Reserves who was killed in the line of duty in 1992.

Free refreshments will be available before and after the race. Winners will be determined in more than 10 divisions in the 5K and 10K.

Wareham's Cooper bolsters Chargers

San Diego Chargers linebacker Stephen Cooper of Wareham performed well in his starting role in the Chargers' 14-3 victory against Chicago last weekend. The former University of Maine star is one of three new starters in the Chargers' defense this season, and he led the team with eight tackles on Sunday. He also recovered a fumble. Now in his fifth NFL season, Cooper will be back in the area this weekend, when San Diego takes on the Patriots in Foxborough on Sunday night.

Siever scores one, sets up another

Bentley College junior Laura Siever of Plymouth scored the game-winning goal for a 2-1 win against Southern Connecticut State last week in a Northeast-10 Conference women's soccer opener for the Falcons.

The Falcons came from behind to capture the win. The win improved Bentley to 4-1 overall. Siever, a midfielder and Plymouth North graduate, also had an assist in the win.

Bentley will travel to Syracuse, N.Y., to play Le Moyne College on Saturday.
