BORMIO, Italy -- Only hours after winning the super giant slalom gold medal Saturday at the world championships, Bode Miller lost it. He discovered the medal was missing after celebrating his victory with US teammates.
"The medal was in Bode's jacket and his jacket disappeared," US men's speed coach John McBride said. "Someone eventually returned the medal to the bartender. A team member then retrieved it. But the jacket is gone."
Miller also lost his gold medal from the combined event at the 2003 worlds. The medal helped anchor a faulty toilet seat in his apartment in Patsch, Austria.
"It's one of those seats that keeps falling down," said Miller, the Franconia, N.H., native. "So we taped it to the top and flopped it over like a weight, so it was holding the toilet seat. I just don't know where it went after that."
"It doesn't surprise me," McBride said. "He doesn't care about material stuff too much. He doesn't go home and hold his trophies and cherish them. Rather, he cherishes the feeling of the day he won them."![]()
