American Vonn wins women's downhill

American Lindsey Vonn (formerly Lindsey Kildow) won a World Cup downhill yesterday in Lake Louise, Alberta, withstanding temperatures that plunged to 18 below zero. Vonn was followed by Austria's Renate Goetschl and Canada's Britt Janyk on the men's Olympic downhill course. This was the fourth career downhill victory at Lake Louise for Vonn, who was timed in 1 minute 48.69 seconds. She married US skier Thomas Vonn in September. Goetschl finished in 1:49.77 and Janyk was timed at 1:49.96 . . . Steven Holcomb piloted the US four-man team to a 0.10-second victory over Germany in a World Cup bobsled event at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta, with a two-run time of 1:48.14. Germany's Andre Lange was second in 1:48.24 . . . Austrian Thomas Morgenstern won the first World Cup individual ski jump of the season, beating two Norwegians in the large hill event in Kuusamo, Finland. Morgenstern set a hill record in the opening round with a leap of 146.5 meters, then hit 137 as the last jumper in the final round for a total of 308.8 points. The second round had a lower start gate.

Wennemars skates to 2d 1,500m win
Erben Wennemars edged Enrico Fabris and Havard Bokko in Kolomna, Russia, to win his second 1,500-meter World Cup speedskating race this season. Wennemars, who won the season-opening 1,500 at the Utah Olympic Oval Nov. 10, finished in 1:46.07, 0.02 ahead of Fabris, the 2006 Olympic gold medalist. Bokko was third in 1:46.12 . . . South Koreans won all the races at a short-track speedskating World Cup with victories by Song Kyung-taek, Sung Si-bak, Yang Shin-young, and Shin Sae-bom in Turin, Italy. Song won the men's 1,000 meters in 1:26.216, ahead of compatriot Ahn Hyun-soo in 1:27.469 and American Jordan Malone in 1:27.729. Sung won the 1,500 in 2:17.502, followed by Canada's Charles Hamelin in 2:17.811 and Yuri Confortola of Italy in 2:17.939. In the women's events, Yang clinched the 1,000 in 1:33.764, beating fellow South Korean Jin Sun-yu in 1:33.865 and American Katherine Reutter in 1:34.008. Shin won the 1,500 in 2:25.420. Kalyna Roberge of Canada was second in 2:25.551 and Park Seung-hi of Korea was third in 2:25.612.

Ando out of GP final; Kostner wins NHK
Barely eight months after capturing the world championship at home, Miki Ando failed to make the Grand Prix final. A clearly nervous Ando tripped up in Sendai, Japan, to finish fourth behind winner Carolina Kostner of Italy at the NHK Trophy. A poor free skate dropped the Japanese star out of the top six qualifying spot for the Grand Prix final in two weeks in Turin, Italy. Earlier, Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic defeated Japan's Daisuke Takahashi in the men's short program. American Stephen Carriere, last year's world junior champion, was third. European champions Isabelle Delobel and Olivier Schoenfelder of France won the ice dance.

Lickliter's 72 leads Q-school by 3
Frank Lickliter II shot an even-par 72 at Orange County National to take a three-stroke lead over Jason Allred (70) after the fourth of six rounds in the PGA Tour National Qualifying Tournament in Winter Garden, Fla. Lickliter, a two-time winner on Tour, had a 24-under 264 total . . . Jane Park shot a 4-under 68 at LPGA International to take a six-stroke lead after the fourth round of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. . . . Leslie Shannon Stewart, who won more than two dozen tournaments in Connecticut and Florida and was a player and captain of four US Curtis Cup teams, has been named to the Connecticut Golf Hall of Fame . . . Trevor Immelman and Justin Rose shot 5-under 67s (16-under 200) to share a five-stroke lead after the third round of the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City, South Africa.

Wild's Walz announces his retirement
Minnesota Wild center Wes Walz announced his retirement as expected, ending his 13-year NHL career as the team’s career leader in games played. Walz, 37, had one goal and three assists in 11 games this season before leaving the team. Neither he nor the Wild offered any specifics about his leave of absence, which lasted a month . . . Andy Franck stopped 21 shots in his AHL debut as the Providence Bruins routed the Rochester Americans, 5-1, at Dunkin’ Donuts Center . . . A van carrying part of Purdue University’s club hockey team rolled over on an icy highway in Wingate, Ind., killing one person and injuring seven others, school officials said. The identity of the team member who died wasn’t immediately released because relatives had yet to be notified . . . Erik Vendt of North Easton won the 1,650 freestyle in 14:34.85 in the US Short Course Nationals in Atlanta . . . Riders who want to compete in the 2008 Giro d'Italia will need a biological passport. The passport program will monitor a series of blood parameters of a rider over time to create the medical snapshot that will be compared to results of doping tests. The 91st edition of the race will open with three stages in Sicily and includes four time trials on a course considered less difficult than recent years . . . Regina Halmich, 31, who made women's boxing popular in Germany, ended her career in Berlin, a day after defending her Women's International Boxing Federation flyweight title for a record 45th time. Halmich outpointed Hagar Shmoulefeld Finer of Israel to finish with a 54-1-1 record.
