Marlies Schild of Austria won her sixth World Cup slalom of the season yesterday in Soldeu-Grandvalira, Andorra, after overall leader Lindsey Vonn and defending champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch crashed out in the opening run on the windy course.

Schild is one victory shy of the record 34 slalom wins by Switzerland’s Vreni Schneider. Vonn started the first run well but fell after taking a gate wide and slid down the center of the hill. Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was second, Austria’s Kathrin Zettel third.

Hoefl-Riesch, the Olympic slalom gold medalist, failed to finish her second straight slalom when she hit a flag and spun off the course.

Vonn hasn’t won a slalom since 2009, dominating the World Cup downhill instead.

Vonn’s teammate, 16-year-old Mikaela Shiffrin, had the best day for the US skiers, finishing 10th after a strong second run.

Men’s downhill - Emerging Swiss standout Beat Feuz celebrated his 25th birthday by winning the inaugural World Cup event in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, on the course for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

American Bode Miller was fastest midway down but then made a mistake and finished fourth. Canada’s Benjamin Thomsen finished second, France’s Adrien Theaux third.

Skicross - The Canadians made a last-minute decision to compete in the US Grand Prix in Park City, Utah, and it paid off as Chris Del Bosco and Marielle Thompson swept gold. American Langley McNeal finished second in the women’s race.

Ski jumping - Norway’s team of Anders Fannemel, Rune Velta, Vegard Sklett, and Anders Bardal beat Austria’s Martin Koch, Andreas Kofler, Thomas Morgenstern, and Gregor Schlierenzauer to win a World Cup team event in Willingen, Germany.

Cross-country - Johan Olsson of Sweden and Norway’s Marit Bjoergen won classical style mass start World Cup men’s and women’s events in Nove Mesto, Czech Republic.

World Cup leader Dario Cologna of Switzerland was second, Russia’s Maxim Vylegzhanin third. Bjoergen won the 15-kilometer race to regain the overall World Cup lead. Poland’s Justyna Kowalczyk was second.

Biathlon - Martin Fourcade of France edged Timofey Lapshin of Russia to win a 10-kilometer World Cup sprint in Kontiolahti, Finland. Magdalena Neuner of Germany won the women’s 7.5-kilometer sprint ahead of Makarainen of Finland.

Luge - Olympic champion Felix Loch of host Germany won the title for the third time at the world championships in Altenberg.
