Kearney sets record with 15th straight
American Hannah Kearney won her 15th straight World Cup moguls event yesterday in Beida Lake, China, breaking downhill great Ingemar Stenmark’s all-discipline record for consecutive FIS World Cup victories.
“It’s insane. I had no idea about the record,’’ Kearney said. “It’s great to have this record as a freestyle skier. Alpine has a lot more races, thus more opportunities to start a streak.
“That is the biggest honor that I can possibly receive considering all the amazing athletes that have crossed through the FIS World Cup circuit throughout the years.’’
Kearney, from Norwich, Vt., won after stumbling on top and barely making the four-skier super finals.
Stenmark won 14 straight giant slaloms in 1978-80.
Women’s giant slalom - Tessa Worley of France fought off gusting winds to win a second straight World Cup race in Soldeu-Grandvalira, Andorra. Overall leader Lindsey Vonn was more than a second behind and finished eighth. Slovenia’s Tina Maze was second, defending World Cup champion Maria Hoefl-Riesch third.
Men’s super combined - Ivica Kostelic won his second straight World Cup super-combined title with a victory on the 2014 Sochi Olympics course in Krasnaya Polyana, Russia, but hobbled away with a right knee injury that may require surgery. Beat Feuz of Switzerland was second, France’s Thomas Mermillod Blondin third.
All of the Americans went out in the slalom run. Bode Miller was fourth after the downhill portion but failed to make a gate on the top, while Ted Ligety and Will Brandenburg straddled on the bottom.
Figure skating - Two-time world junior champions Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China won the pairs title at the Four Continents Championships in Colorado Springs.
Caydee Denney and John Coughlin, the 2012 US champions, were second, followed by Americans Mary Beth Marley and Rockne Brubaker.
Ski jump - Anders Bardal of Norway won a World Cup event in Willingen, Germany. Roman Koudelka of the Czech Republic was second, Japan’s Daiki Ito third.
Luge - Olympic champion Tatjana Huefner of Germany won the title for the fourth time at the world championships in Altenberg, while host Germany took gold in the team relay.![]()
