Raich picks up first victory in two years

Austrian skier Benjamin Raich got his first World Cup victory in more than two years yesterday in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, winning a super-G while favorite Didier Cuche finished third. Raich, a former World Cup overall champion who suffered a serious knee injury a year ago, last won in December 2009 at a super-combined event at Val d’Isere, France. Adrien Theaux of France was runner-up. American Bode Miller, who underwent minor left knee surgery last week, sat out and will miss today’s giant slalom. Andrew Weibrecht fared best of the US racers, placing 20th. . . . The last women’s World Cup downhill of the season in Bansko, Bulgaria, was canceled because of strong wind and won’t be rescheduled. The current top 25 will compete in the World Cup finals next month in Schladming, Austria. Lindsey Vonn leads the standings, followed by Germany’s Maria Hoefl-Riesch and Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl . . . Bernhard Gruber of Austria won a Nordic combined World Cup event in Liberac, Czech Republic, finishing ahead of Germany’s Eric Frenzel and Wilhelm Denifl . . . Austrian Andrea Limbacher earned her first World Cup victory in a ski cross event in Bischofswiesen, Germany, finishing ahead of France’s Ophelie David and Alizee Baron. Canada’s Tristan Tafel won the men’s final ahead of American John Teller and Canada’s Christopher Del Bosco . . . Slovenia’s Robert Kranjec won the gold medal at the Ski Flying World Championships in Vikersund, Norway . . . Switzerland’s Cyrill Hunziker won the slopestyle event in the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup in Jyvaskyla, Finland. Norway’s Linn-Ida Murud won the women’s event . . . Ukrainian Stanislav Kravchuk won the men’s freestyle aerials World Cup event in Raubichi, Belarus. China’s Yang You won the women’s competition . . . Latvia’s Martins Dukurs won his second straight gold medal in men’s skeleton at the world championships in Lake Placid, N.Y. Frank Rommel of Germany was second, and Ben Sandford of New Zealand used a strong third run to vault past American Matt Antoine to take the bronze.

Radwanska tops Goerges for Dubai title

Agnieszka Radwanska won her eighth career WTA title, defeating Julia Goerges, 7-5, 6-4, in the Dubai Championships final in United Arab Emirates. Radwanska will rise one place to a career-best No. 5 when the world rankings are released tomorrow. Radwanska improved her record to 15-3 this year, with the three losses against top-ranked Victoria Azarenka, who pulled out of the Dubai tournament because of an ankle injury . . . Juan Martin del Potro defeated top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 6-4, 6-7 (11-9), 6-3, in an Open 13 semifinal in Marseille. Del Potro will face 2010 champion Michael Llodra, who defeated third-seeded Janko Tipsarevic, 6-4, 7-6 (12-10). Del Potro lost to Roger Federer in the ABN Amro final last Sunday in Rotterdam. He leads Llodra, 2-0, in head-to-head matches . . . Jurgen Melzer continued his amazing run with a broken right big toe by beating Radek Stepanek, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in the semifinals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships in Nashville. Melzer, who ousted top seed John Isner in straight sets to reach the semifinals, will meet Milos Raonic, a 6-4, 6-4 winner over Benjamin Becker . . . Defending champion Nicolas Almagro will meet fellow Spaniard David Ferrer in the Copa Claro final in Buenos, Aires. Almagro defeated Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, and Ferrer cruised past David Nalbandian, 6-1, 6-4.

Panthers acquire Wolski from Rangers

The Rangers traded forward Wojtek Wolski to the Panthers for defenseman Michael Vernace and a third-round draft pick in 2013. Wolski, 26, has three assists in nine games with the Rangers this season. In 402 games with New York, Colorado, and Phoenix, Wolski has 91 goals and 158 assists. The move clears cap space for the Rangers, one of the teams rumored to be after Blue Jackets winger Rick Nash . . . The Blue Jackets claimed center Darryl Boyce off waivers from the Maple Leafs and assigned defenseman David Savard to their AHL Springfield affiliate.

Povetkin retains heavyweight crown

Russian Alexander Povetkin (23-0) did just enough to earn a points decision over Marco Huck (34-2) and retain his WBA heavyweight title in Stuttgart, Germany. Huck, the WBO cruiserweight champion, had Povetkin staggering back against the ropes in the fourth and seventh rounds, but the German was unable to deliver the knockout blow. One judge called it a draw, the others scored it 116-113 and 116-112 . . . Favorite El Padrino edged Mark Valeski in New Orleans to win the Grade 2 $300,000 Risen Star Stakes, the final prep for the Louisiana Derby . . . The Factor defeated Sway Away by a half-length to win the $200,000 San Carlos Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.
