Local squads reach sectionals

The Weymouth Club will be represented with a pair of women's tennis teams at a national sectional tournament opening tomorrow in Springfield.

The teams, in the 3.5 and 4.5 categories of the US Tennis Association's rating program, competed in USTA leagues this summer and beat undefeated teams to win their district crowns and advance to the sectionals.

Under the guidance of Mike Quirke, the 3.5 team defeated Paxton, 3-2, for the Eastern Massachusetts district title. The team is composed of Sally Bergstein (Hingham), Fran O'Neil (Braintree), Colleen Robbie (Harwichport), Patti Sullivan (Quincy), Leigh Keliher (Hingham), Amanda McDonough (Milton), Michelle Fallon (Weymouth), Rosemary Dalton (South Easton), Ingrid Drago (Duxbury), Denise Cargill (Halifax), Susan Doherty, Kathy Anderson (Cohasset), and Jan Santorella (Scituate).

The 4.5 team, under the direction of Alex Howard, beat Manchester, 3-2, in the final. Led by cocaptains Beth Shea and Davida Dinerman (Ashland), the squad also features Christina Marini (Weymouth), Lyn Calkins (Hopkinton), Sally Kellogg (Wellesley), Kristin Hartley (Charlotte, Vt.), Susan Corey (West Newton), Anne Huemme (Bedford), Kimberly McCrohon (Worcester), Naomi Biswas (Bedford), Jessica Cahill (Newton), Maureen Sumner (Needham), Sheila Weinstock (Framingham), Jeanne Hulsen (Hinesburg, Vt.), and Kathleen Lawlor (Hingham).

The teams are competing to earn a trip to the nationals, which will be held this fall in Tucson.

AAU team hits high point

Erin Young and Molly McLaughlin of Westwood, Leigha Tacey of Foxborough, and Asia Mitchell of Easton were members of the Newton-based Bay State Jaguars AAU girls' basketball team that made a good showing at the recent Junior National Tournament in Washington, D.C.

The state champion 14-year-old Jaguars, coached by Newton residents David Bikofsky and Billy Hunt, along with Sam Doner of Framingham, reached the semifinals before falling to the eventual national champion by 2 points.

Young, McLaughlin, and Tacey played varsity basketball as freshmen last season at their respective high schools.

The Jaguars played in eight weekend AAU tournaments, predominantly against older competition that prepared them for the nationals. The team, whose core has been together since the age of 10, posted a 28-7 overall record this spring and summer. In five state tournaments since their inception, the Jaguars have won two gold, one silver, and one bronze medal.

The Jaguars went 4-1 in the pool competition to make the final four, defeating teams from Texas, Ontario, Harlem, and Virginia.

Sebet edges friend for title

Matt Sebet won his second men's club title in three years at Norfolk Golf Club in Westwood last weekend, edging Joe Young, a longtime friend. After 36 holes of stroke play on Friday and Saturday, Sebet and Young were tied for first at 3-over-143, earning the top two seeds for the semifinals of match play. Sebet, a 2007 Westwood High graduate, emerged with a 2-and-1 win in the 18-hole final on Sunday afternoon.

Sebet and Young will be teammates on the golf team at Saint Anselm College this fall.

Young, who graduated from Xaverian this spring, may not have won the men's championship but he did manage to win his second straight junior club title at Norfolk Golf Club earlier this year.

World Series bid falls short

The Canton Junior League baseball team recently returned from the Junior League World Series in Michigan, where it compiled a 1-3 record. Canton defeated Texas, the Southwest champion, 10-4, in the opening game. Canton represented the East in its first trip to the World Series for the 13- and 14-year-olds.

Curacao defeated Hawaii, 5-2, to win the World Series in Taylor, Mich., last weekend.
