Top-ranked Serena Williams most likely will receive a “significant’’ fine but no suspension for her US Open tirade, the president of the International Tennis Federation said. Grand Slam administrator Bill Babcock is expected to give his recommendation to the Grand Slam committee, which probably will announce the sanction tomorrow or Tuesday . . . Top-seeded Andy Murray held off fourth-seeded Fernando Verdasco, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, to reach the Valencia Open final in Spain against Mikhail Youzhny. Unseeded Youzhny defeated second-seeded Nikolay Davydenko, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 . . . Roger Federer will play Novak Djokovic in the Swiss Indoors final in Basel in a bid for a fourth straight title in his hometown tournament. Federer defeated Marco Chiudinelli, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, and Djokovic rallied to beat Radek Stepanek, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-2 . . . Alexa Glatch and Melanie Oudin lost in straight sets to give Italy a 2-0 lead over the United States in the Fed Cup final in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Reutter wins, Ohno second in Montreal
Katherine Reutter of the United States won the women’s 1,500 meters at the short-track speedskating World Cup event in Montreal, and US star Apolo Anton Ohno took second in the men’s 500. Charles Hamelin of Canada held off Ohno to win the 500 in 41.576 seconds. Ohno finished in 41.807 and fellow American Jeff Simon was third in 41.870. Earlier, Hamelin won the 1,500, finishing in 2:19.220 to edge Si-Bak Sung of South Korea by one-1,000th of a second. Travis Jayner of the United States placed third in 2:19.560. Ohno failed to qualify for the 1,500 final after placing fourth in his semifinal heat. Only the top two skaters advance . . . World champion Sven Kramer of the Netherlands cruised to victory in the 5,000 meters at the season-opening speedskating World Cup meet in Berlin. Kramer covered the distance in 6:14.69 for his 24th career World Cup win. Wang Beixing of China won the women’s 500 in 37.85 seconds, beating world champion Jenny Wolf of Germany . . . Brian Joubert of France won the NHK Trophy figure skating event in Nagano with a strong performance in the men’s free skate. Islanders’ Martinek out for season
New York Islanders defenseman Radek Martinek is out for the season with a knee injury. The Islanders announced that Martinek tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee Friday night in the third period of a 2-1 loss at New Jersey. Martinek was helped off the ice with about 5:45 to play after he was hit hard against the boards in front of the Devils bench by Zach Parise. The Islanders will also be without captain Doug Weight, who is expected to miss a week after sustaining an undisclosed upper body injury . . . The Providence Bruins lost, 3-0, to the host Lowell Devils . . . Canada rallied from a goal down to beat the US, 5-1, in the women’s Four Nations Cup final in Tikkurila, Finland . . . The Pistons say forward Tayshaun Prince will be out of the lineup indefinitely because of a small rupture of a disk in his lower back. The injury was confirmed following an MRI and evaluation by team doctors last week . . . Bulls forward Tyrus Thomas had surgery on his left forearm a day after he broke it during a weight-training session. Thomas is expected to miss 4-6 weeks . . . South Korea’s Bo Bae Song won the Mizuno Classic in Shima, Japan, for her first LPGA Tour title, closing with a 4-under 68 for a three-stroke victory over Lorena Ochoa, Brittany Lang, and Hee Young Park . . . Sophomore basketball center Assane Sene has been suspended for Virginia’s first three games for conduct detrimental to the team . . . Technical problems prevented the sale of any of the 100,000 tickets for the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics that were to be available yesterday . . . David Haye won the World Boxing Association heavyweight title with a split decision over Nikolai Valuev in Nuremberg, Germany . . . Chad Dawson, fighting in his home state, won an unanimous decision over Glen Johnson in Hartford to remain undefeated and win the interim WBC light heavyweight title . . . The Jacksonville Jaguars were awarded safety Anthony Smith off waivers from the Rams . . .
