Italy clinched its second Fed Cup title in four years when Flavia Pennetta beat Melanie Oudin, 7-5, 6-2, in Reggio Calabria. Pennetta’s victory gave the experienced Italians an insurmountable 3-0 lead over a young US team - missing Venus and Serena Williams, who decided not to play - in the five-match series on an outdoor clay court. The United States has won a record 17 Fed Cups, but none since 2000 . . . Top-ranked Roger Federer lost his hometown tournament, falling, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to Novak Djokovic at the Swiss Indoors final in Basel.hockey
Coyle helps Under-18s win in Finland
Charlie Coyle of East Weymouth buried the eventual game-winning goal for the United States, scoring midway through the second period of a 3-2 win against Switzerland at the Under-18 Four Nations Cup in Pori, Finland. Team USA won all three of its games to capture the tournament title . . . Steve Yzerman, Brett Hull, Luc Robitaille, Brian Leetch, and New Jersey Devils president Lou Lamoriello will be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto tonight . . . Mark Derlago scored the lone goal for Providence as the Bruins dropped a 5-1 American Hockey League home decision to Hershey . . . UMass-Lowell scored four goals in the third period as the eighth-ranked River Hawks beat visiting New Hampshire, 6-3 . . . Eagles enjoy lopsided exhibition game
Reggie Jackson scored 23 points and Corey Raji added 19 points and 14 rebounds, leading six players in double figures as Boston College beat St. Michael’s, 99-58, in an exhibition game at Conte Forum. The Eagles open their season Friday against visiting Dartmouth . . . Jerome Dyson scored 32 points as Connecticut breezed to an 88-50 exhibition victory over UMass-Lowell in Storrs, Conn. . . . UCLA freshman forward Tyler Honeycutt will be out three to four weeks with a stress reaction in his right tibia . . . Spurs guard Tony Parker is not expected to play tonight against Toronto because of a sore left ankle. The Spurs said that Parker’s injury was a mild sprain that could sideline him for a week.football
Best out of hospital after end zone fall
California star tailback Jahvid Best was released from the hospital and will miss at least one game after sustaining a concussion on a terrifying fall in the end zone. Best spent the night at Highland General Hospital in Oakland after landing on the back of his head in the end zone and being briefly knocked unconscious in the Golden Bears’ 31-14 loss to Oregon State . . . Florida State says quarterback Christian Ponder has a separated right shoulder and will miss the game Saturday against Wake Forest. Ponder injured his throwing shoulder while making a tackle in the fourth quarter of the Seminoles’ 40-24 loss to Clemson.soccer
Dynamo move into Western final again
Brian Ching scored six minutes into overtime and the Houston Dynamo advanced to the MLS Western Conference final for the third time in four years with a 1-0 home win over Seattle. The teams dueled to a scoreless tie in the first leg of their two-game semifinal Oct. 29, setting up the winner-take-all match. Houston will play Los Angeles, which advanced after Landon Donovan buried a 73d-minute penalty kick for a 1-0 victory over Chivas USA in Carson, Calif. Donovan tied Carlos Ruiz’s MLS record with his 16th postseason goal . . . Because of the Galaxy’s win, David Beckham will miss England’s friendly against Brazil next week.miscellany
Two unknowns ready for WSOP finale
A 21-year-old playing in his first World Series of Poker main event is poised to become its youngest champion if he can beat an amateur logger who had never gambled for high stakes before entering the no-limit Texas Hold ’em tournament. Joe Cada, from Shelby Township, Mich., is an online poker pro who should bring more experience to the table than 46-year-old Darvin Moon of Oakland, Md. The two will meet tonight in Las Vegas for the tournament’s top prize of $8.55 million . . . The Phillies have declined their $5.5 million 2010 option on third baseman Pedro Feliz. He’ll receive a $500,000 buyout . . . America’s Cup challenger BMW Oracle Racing has unveiled what is believed to be the world’s largest wing, which it will test as a replacement for a traditional soft-sail rig on its monster trimaran.
