BASEBALL 2003

American League West

1. Oakland A's
Manager: Ken Macha (1st season)
2002 finish: 103-59, 1st
Schedule | Team directory

Billy Beane resisted the siren call of the Red Sox to remain with the A's, who gave the rest of baseball a startlingly early heads up when owner Steve Schott announced this spring he would make no attempt to re-sign MVP Tejada. That's business as usual, of course, for the A's (RIP, Jason Giambi). Macha, denied the chance to interview for the Sox job last spring, inherits the game's best young pitching, while welcoming a good new bat in Durazo.

How do you improve the team that has become the model for its rivals because of its unselfish play, disciplined hitting, and brilliant bullpen? By keeping that team intact, which is what Disney did by allowing GM Bill Stoneman to raise his payroll from $62 million to $84 million. Aaron Sele, who missed the postseason, is still not back from rotator cuff surgery, but Angels will benefit from a full season from rookie sensation Francisco Rodriguez and Lackey. And Sox castoff Eckstein tied in the MVP voting (11th) with Nomar Garciaparra.

3. Seattle Mariners
Manager: Bob Melvin (1st season)
2002 finish: 93-69, 3d (10 GB)
Schedule | Team directory

Pat Gillick went fishing for Jose Contreras, but his biggest offseason moves were retaining stars Olerud, Martinez, and Moyer. New manager Melvin has a tough act to follow in Lou Piniella, and will be mixing some new kids into the rotation; if they do as well as Joel Pineiro (14 wins as a rookie last season), M's will be formidable. Closer Kazuhiro Sasaki is coming off elbow surgery, but LH setup man Arthur Rhodes had a dazzling K/BB ratio of 5.80 (81 Ks, 13 BBs).

4. Texas Rangers
Manager: Buck Showalter (1st season)
2002 finish: 72-90, 4th (31 GB)
Schedule | Team directory

For five straight years, the Rangers have ranked 11th or worse in ERA, and there is little reason to believe Showalter will reverse that trend in his first season as manager. After losing a league-high 15 games when leading after the sixth inning, the Rangers upgraded their bullpen with the addition of ex-Sox closer Ugueth Urbina and setup man Esteban Yan. Blalock and rookie Mark Teixeira are clamoring for playing time; Everett has been supplanted in center by Glanville and is on the block.
