The 13 runs scored by the Red Sox were the most in a World Series opener, and the 12-run spread made it the most one-sided outcome in an opener as the Sox derailed the streaking Rockies, who had won 21 of their previous 22 games. Beckett ran his October record to 4-0, striking out the first four Rockies and nine overall. The Sox had 17 hits, 16 in the first five innings, and broke an 82-year-old World Series record with eight doubles.
