When the Patriots selected the Rutgers product with the 27th pick, the consensus among draft experts was that McCourty was a reach, a special teams demon who would be a nickelback as a rookie. McCourty has emerged as the Patriots' best rookie cornerback since Mike Haynes in 1976, and he was just part of a draft weekend haul that also brought tight ends Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski, among others.
