Hitting for the cycle Hitting for the cycle in baseball starts the second tier of most difficult accomplishments in sports. While you won't see a player hit for the Triple Crown or record a quadruple-double every decade, an average of about 2.5 cycles are recorded each season. Hitting for the cycle means a player has hit, in no particular order, a single, double, triple and home run in the same game. Three players have hit for the cycle three times in their careers since 1883, and the Mets' Scott Hairston (left) did it April 27 against the Rockies.
