BC High makes history, advances to first boys’ state tennis final

NEWTON — Division 1 state final, say hello to BC High.

For the first time in school history, the BC High Eagles (20-2) are headed to the MIAA Division 1 state final after dispatching St. John’s Prep, 3-0, Wednesday afternoon at Newton North High, setting up a state championship bout with St. John’s of Shrewsbury Thursday at Clark University.

BC High, going against a tournament regular and Catholic Conference rival in St. John’s Prep (15-5), might have been in unfamiliar territory going so deep into the tourney, but was not up against an unfamiliar foe.

Since the 1970s, Prep and BC High have squared off twice every regular season. Before second-year coach Lance Hutchinson took over never had BC High beaten the Prep. That’s all changed now.
