The Spartans could not claim the elusive state title this year, but with the help of this junior, they got all the way to the final game of the season. But with the help of DeSantis's strong play on both ends of the field, they captured the Division 3 EMass and North sectional titles, as well as the Middlesex League crown. DeSantis tallied 7 goals and 16 assists this season from his center midfield position. He was named the Middlesex League MVP and an EMass All-Star. In the winter, he suits up for the varsity basketball team. He plays club soccer for the Appian Soccer Club. |
Coaches of the Year
George Scarpelli, Medford

In his seven years at the helm, Scarpelli has put together one of the top boys' soccer programs in EMass. Led by All-Scholastic Tiago Delboni, his team has won consecutive MIAA Division 1 North sectional titles, as well as a share of the Greater Boston League title each of the last two years. This year he led the Mustangs to a 20-1-2 record, their only loss coming in the state championship to perennial power Ludlow. Scarpelli is a graduate of Medford High and Salem State, where he played soccer. He also coaches the softball team in the spring and enjoys playing golf in his spare time. "It was a pleasure coaching a group of boys that showed character, class, and pride at all times." |

Jim Braga, Middleboro

The Sachems were the surprise team of the Division 2 South sectional this year, but not to anyone who had followed the team during the season. The Sachems finished second in the Patriot League but caught fire in the MIAA tournament, capturing the Division 2 South and EMass championships before falling in the state final to Westboro. Nauset dropped a heartbreaker to Medford in penalty kicks in the EMass final. He has recorded 36 shutouts in the last three years, including 19 this season. He also plays volleyball, and enjoys outdoor sports, cars, and traveling as his other hobbies. He plans to go to college and though he's not sure where, there's a good bet soccer is in his future. |

Lee Soares, Dartmouth
 FORWARD |
 |
|
This gifted scorer spent much of the season playing hurt, and his statistics may have suffered a bit. But his mere presence on the field forced many teams to devise strategies to stop him. A two-time All-Scholastic, he led the Indians to the EMass title as a junior, but they were upset in the second round this year by Durfee, abruptly ending a spectacular career. He finished this season with 15 goals and 19 assists and ended his career with 50 goals and 33 assists. He plays club soccer for the Dream Team. He hopes to study law and architecture in college. |
