Harry Bane, Pingree
EIL GOLF
  A senior captain, Bane anchored the 14-0 Eastern Independent League champions from his No. 1 position. He fired a 1-under par at Myopia in a match against Concord Academy to secure the team's season championship. The South Hamilton resident is a four-year letterwinner and three-time EIL All-Star with a scoring average of 35.4. He finished fourth in the Westfield New England Junior PGA Championship this summer. A cancer survivor, Bane also serves as a motivational speaker during the summer. He hopes to continue his golf career in college.
Dana Bergstrom, Lexington Christian
EIL SOCCER
  Someone apparently forgot to tell Dana Bergstrom freshmen are supposed to be seen and not heard. Bergstrom made an immediate impact at Lexington Christian, notching 25 goals and 18 assists to lead the Eastern Independent League in scoring. For her contributions, the 5-foot-5-inch, 135-pound midfielder was named the team's MVP. Bergstrom also plays varsity basketball at LCA. An honor-roll student, Bergstrom has played with the Boston Renegades for two years and also has competed with the Spirit of Mass and the New Hampshire Phantoms in summer league play.
Eliza Gardiner, Winsor
EIL CROSS-COUNTRY
  Gardiner served as a cocaptain in this, her senior season, as well as last season, and was undefeated in Eastern Independent League competition. She won the EIL Championship meet (which she also won in 2001, as a sophomore), leading Winsor to the team victory in the process. Gardiner also won the Pingree Invitational and has been named to the All-New England team three straight years. The Chestnut Hill resident also serves as a tricaptain of the spring track team, and won the mile at the 2003 Bay State Summer Games.
Peter Gordon, Lexington Christian
EIL SOCCER
  Gordon, a 5-foot-9-inch forward, was an integral member of the Lexington Christian team, tallying 25 goals and 11 assists this season. The performance earned Gordon, a junior, Eastern Independent League coMVP honors along with classmate and girls' MVP Dana Bergstrom. The Woburn resident also plays basketball at Lexington Christian. During the summer, he competes for the FC Boston Blast and he plays for the Olympic Development Program 1987 Massachusetts state team.
Adrienne Marois, Bancroft
EIL FIELD HOCKEY
  Only a sophomore, Marois is a three-year varsity starter for Bancroft and served as the team's captain this season. A midfielder, Marois had four goals and nine assists and led Bancroft to the Eastern Independent League championship. Bancroft was also a NEPSAC Class C semifinalist. For her efforts, she was named the league MVP and Player of the Year, and also made the NEPSAC All-Tournament Team. The Auburn resident also plays varsity basketball and softball, and was an Eastern Independent League first team all-star in the latter.
Wallace McFarlane, Concord Acad.
EIL CROSS-COUNTRY
  McFarlane won the Eastern Independent League title and was elected the league's MVP. He is a three-time EIL All-Star and placed third and sixth in the EIL championship in his junior and sophomore years, respectively. McFarlane, team captain, finished 16th at the New England championships despite losing a shoe just before the 4K mark. A former top wrestler, he won the New England Junior Prep Championship as a freshman. His hobbies and interests include playing the guitar, writing fiction, and carpentry. Although he hasn't made college plans yet, he is considering Bowdoin.
Ryan Poliseno, Beaver CD
EIL SOCCER
  The 5-foot-11-inch, 160-pound midfielder/forward took home Eastern Independent League coMVP honors on the basis of his 15-goal, 15-assist performance this year. Poliseno, a senior, is a four-year varsity player, also leading the team in scoring as a junior. He plays for the FC Greater Boston Bolts during the summer and was an Olympic Development Program state player from 1998-2001. The Hanover resident plans to major in communications and is considering Fordham, Brandeis, Northeastern, and Syracuse.
Charlie Davies, Brooks
ISL SOCCER
  Davies, a senior, has left his name all over the Independent School League recordbooks in his four years at Brooks. A three-time ISL All-Star, Davies led the league in goals and assists for the second time this season. His 30 goals set the league's single-season record, as did his 70 points this year. He also owns the records for career points and career goals (101). Davies is also an accomplished wrestler, being a two-time ISL (2002, '03) and New England ('01, '02) champion and a 2002 All-American. The 5-foot-10-inch, 152-pound forward plans to attend Boston College in the fall.
Mollie Mattuchio, Middlesex
ISL SOCCER
  A resident of Pepperell, Mattuchio served as the captain of the Middlesex soccer team this season and contributed seven goals, bringing the senior's career total to 25. Mattuchio was named to the Independent School League All-League First Team this season, her second selection. She also captains the varsity basketball team, and plays on the two-time defending ISL champion lacrosse team. She also plays soccer for the South Coast Scorpions during the summer. Mattuchio is undecided on her college plans.
Devon Shapiro, Middlesex
ISL FIELD HOCKEY
  A senior, Shapiro's 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) keyed Middlesex's run to the Independent School League and New England championships this year. It was the school's second consecutive ISL championship. Shapiro was an all-league field hockey selection as a sophomore and junior. A multisport athlete, Shapiro also earned all-league and all-New England honors in ski racing (2001, '02, '03) and all-league honors in softball (2003). Shapiro, a high honors student and member of the USFHA Futures Elite, has committed to Harvard, where she will resume her field hockey career.
Anyenda Inyagwa, Belmont Hill
ISL CROSS-COUNTRY
  Inyagwa, a Boston resident, went undefeated in league competition this season on his way to the Independent School League championship. He was runner-up in the New England Prep School Class B championships. The 5-foot-10-inch, 145-pound senior was named league MVP for his efforts, and also landed on the All-League and All-New England teams (for the second straight year). Inyagwa also wrestles, placing third in his weight class in the New England championships. He also enjoys singing, reading, and technical work in the theater.
Keara Thomas, GDA
ISL CROSS-COUNTRY
  Thomas made her freshman year at GDA a memorable one, winning all her regular-season races as well as the Independent School League and New England championships. Thomas set three course records along the way, and earned team MVP honors. The 5-foot-1-inch Thomas was also a cross-country champion and record-holder at Haverhill Middle School, and appears to be headed for three more years of rewriting the recordbooks at Governor Dummer. She also runs track and dances. She competes for Lynx Elite Athletics in the summer.
Tim Daniels, Milton Academy
ISL FOOTBALL
  Daniels helped Milton Academy's ascent to the elite among Independent School League squads this season as the team posted an impressive 7-1 record. The senior tailback amassed 1,267 yards for a 9.4 yards per carry average, and scored 108 total points. He was also outstanding on the defensive side of the ball as a safety, leading Milton Academy with 63 tackles. Those gaudy numbers helped him garner ISL co-MVP honors with Middlesex running back Chad Gaudet. An honors student, Daniels plans to attend Dartmouth College next September.
Mike Videira, Nobles
ISL SOCCER
  If you love soccer, then pay attention to Mike Videira. A two-time All-Scholastic, Videira was the key figure in another great season at the Dedham school. Nobles went 12-3-2 this fall and earned a berth in the New England Prep tournament for the 10th consecutive year. Videira was team captain and also its leading scorer with 10 goals and 9 assists. With Videira in the lineup, Nobles went 37-4-8 including a New England title in 2002. Videira plays for the Greater Boston Bolts club team and will attend Duke.
Frank DiVittorio, Choate
PREP CROSS-COUNTRY
  Choate's senior captain, a Mendon native, was the NEPSTA Division 1 champion, finishing the 5K course at Northwest Park in Windsor, Conn., in 15 minutes 30 seconds. In November, DiVittorio won the Young Men's division in the USATF Junior Olympic Regional meet against a field from around the Northeast at Van Cortlandt Park (N.Y.) in 15:59. On his home course in Wallingford, Conn., he broke a 16-year-old school record by 10 seconds. Choate finished second in New England. DiVittorio is also captain of both the varsity hockey and track and field teams and played both sports in the Bay State Games.
Smita Gupta, Choate
PREP CROSS-COUNTRY
  Choate senior Smita Gupta met with nothing but success in her first season of cross-country, after playing varsity soccer for several years. She set a 5K course record of 18 minutes 2 seconds in winning the New England championships. She was also the Founders League champion. Also a track athlete, she was the New England 800-meter champion (2:21) last year, and placed second in the 1,500 meters. Gupta, a Dean's List student who enjoys traveling, reading and inline skating, will attend Brown in the fall.
Mimi Hanley, Phillips Andover
PREP VOLLEYBALL
  Mimi Hanley, a senior at Phillips Academy, Andover hails from Seattle, Wash. Cocaptain of this year's squad, she is a four-year varsity standout and was selected to the league All-Star team in 2001, 2002, and 2003. She plays with the Mass Patriots in the offseason. She led the Andover team in both kills and blocks per game and is also a powerful server. She was the backbone of this year's 19-0 New England championship team. Hanley also plays varsity basketball, where she is a cocaptain, top scorer and rebounder, and she plays varsity lacrosse in the spring.
Joe Metcalf, Phillips Exeter
PREP WATER POLO
  For the second straight year, Metcalf led Phillips Exeter to a New England championship, claimed the tournament MVP award, and was named All-Scholastic. Metcalf, a senior, had 56 goals and 25 assists for Phillips Exeter, 18-4. But Metcalf contributed even more by stopping opponents. "He's the basis of our whole defense," said Phillips Exeter coach Roger Nekton. "He understands the game, and he can read the other team's attacks. He knows how to direct the defensive traffic."
Callum Thomas, Phillips Andover
PREP SOCCER
  Thomas, a senior midfielder, led Andover to a 12-4-2 record and a spot in the New England Prep School Class A Championship final. As a central midfielder, Thomas led Andover's team in scoring with 22 points, with nine goals and four assists. He had four game-winning goals, including the lone goal in the 1-0 semifinal victory over Belmont Hill in the Class A tournament. Callum played for Peterhead Football Club's youth team, a third division club on the North Sea in northeast Scotland. While playing for Peterhead, Thomas once played on the first team in a Scottish Cup match against Aberdeen FC.
Sarah Steele, Loomis
PREP SOCCER
  In her junior season, Steele set a school record for goals in a season with 30. A Longmeadow native, she was selected to the High School All-America team, as well as the All-New England team, and the Connecticut All-State team. She has been selected for the US Region 1 soccer team for the last four years, and has been in the national team pool for two years. She represented the US in the U17 International Tournament in Scotland in March, 2001. She plays lacrosse in the spring, and was the team's leading scorer last year and a member of the New England All-Star team. Steele has earned high honors every term in high school.
