Girls' cross-country
Coaches of the year
Tom Hart, Concord-Carlisle
![]() |
Hart's Patriots had a tremendous season, compiling an impressive resume to rank among the top girls teams in school history. In addition to an 8-0 record and the Dual County League title, the Patriots notched wins at the Amherst Invitational and the McIntyre/Bay State Invitational before finishing second at the state championship in Gardner. After 10 years as C-C coach, Hart call this year's squad hard-working and committed, as well as talented. In addition to the varsity team's success, the JV team had a great season, taking the top five spots at the league meet. With strong returning runners and an influx of talent, the Patriots should be among the state's top teams for years to come.
Ralph Bowman, Wellesley
![]() |
After back-to-back fourth-place finishes in the 2002-03 state championships, the Raiders were ready to step to the front of the pack. Boasting one of the deepest teams in the state - anchored by Runner of the Year Alexandra Krieg - Wellesley blew away the competion in Gardner for the Division 2 crown. Placing three runners in the top four, the Raiders topped defending champion Bishop Feehan. The trio of Krieg, Brielle Chabot, and Ryan Jane Jacoby also led Wellesley to the Bay State League and Catholic Memorial Invitational championships. Krieg and Jacoby are seniors but with the stong contingent of JV runners, Wellesley has an excellent chance to defend its crown.
Runners of the year
Jessica Barton, Newton North
![]() |
State champion and Runner of the Year: Not bad for a first-year runner. After playing last season on the Tigers' varsity soccer team, Barton decided to make the switch to cross-country, a sensible move for an accomplished indoor and outdoor track runner. After a strong season that included second-place finishes at the Bay State Invitational and the Class A EMass championships, Barton captured the Division 1 state championship in Gardner in a time of 17 minutes 3 seconds, leading Newton North to fourth overall. At the Foot Locker Northeast Regional at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, Barton finished 42d in 19:27. She will be among the state's finest runners for the next two years.
Alexandra Krieg, Wellesley
![]() |
Krieg wraps up her high school career with the kind of season befitting the state's top cross-country runner. Krieg took the top spot in the state championship, finishing 23 seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Her first-place finish, coupled with strong finishes by her teammates, allowed the Raiders to capture the team title. She finished second at the EMass championships and first in the Catholic Memorial race. Krieg is a member of the National Honor Society and enjoys drawing and painting. She was awarded a Gold Key in the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards last year. She finished 19th at the Foot Locker Northeast Regionals and last year, she qualified for the nationals in the 2-mile for outdoor track.
The All-Scholastics
Brielle Chabot, Wellesley

Coupled with Krieg, Chabot provided Wellesley with the best 1-2 punch in EMass. A steady contributor to the state champion Raiders, Chabot finished third at the state championship in Gardner and the Catholic Memorial meet, fourth at the EMass championship, and second at the Coaches Invitational. She has been on the varsity squad since freshman year. Last season, she finished sixth at the all-state meet. Chabot also runs indoor and outdoor track for the Raiders and has danced ballet for 13 years. Already accomplished as an junior, Chabot is the heir apparent to Krieg and should lead Wellesley to continued success next year.

![]() |
Collins ranks among the elite runners in EMass. She was the Division 3 EMass champion, won the Manchester Invitational (Large School), and finished 10th at the Brown Invitational (Elite Division). Collins also serves as captain of both the Hornets' indoor and outdoor track teams. She is a member of the National Honor Society as well as the Spanish and Latin Honor Societies. She will attend Georgetown.

One year after leading the Lions to their first EMass Division 1 championship, Curran did it all over again, capturing the individual race as Chelmsford took the overall prize. Undefeated in dual meets in each of the past two years, Curran captained the Lions while being named Merrimack Valley Conference Runner of the Year again this season. Curran also runs indoor and outdoor track and is a National Honor Society member. She has received a letter of assurance from West Point Military Academy.

After a strong season, the freshman turned heads with a sixth-place finish at the state championships in Gardner. Coming in at 17:30, Fallon led Dennis-Yarmouth to a third-place finish. It was not her first encounter with success, She notched first-place finishes at both the Amherst Freshman and the Atlantic Coast League underclassmen races. Cassi Knight, Concord-Carlisle
![]() |
An All-Dual County League runner for each of her first three years with the Patriots, Knight anchored this year's team, perhaps Concord-Carlisle's best. Her fourth-place finish at the All-States led the Patriots to a second-place finish. Knight led Concord-Carlisle to an undefeated regular season and victories at the Amherst Invitational, the McIntyre Bay State Invitational, and the Dual County League meet. Knight's return next season, coupled with the school's tremendous depth, makes the Patriots a legitimate threat to finally dethrone Amherst at the state championships.

She finished fifth at the EMass championships (20:18) as Chelmsford took the team title, third at the Merrimack Valley Conference championships (won by the Lions), and eighth at the All-States in Gardner (17:34).
