Field hockey

Coaches of the year

Mim Jarema, Reading
 DIVISION 1
The Middlesex League has always been a field hockey power and this year was no different as both Reading and Watertown captured North sectional titles. Jarema's Rockets had a terrific year, winning the Division 1 North title before falling to eventual state champion Walpole. This year Reading finished 18-3-2, second in the Middlesex League. For her career, which has spanned 15 years she has more than 200 wins. A graduate of Boston University, she enjoys the beach and spending time with her grandchildren. Commenting on her team, Jarema said, ``Three great captains, 20 great teammates, wonderful assistant coaches, and a great league prepped us all.''
Christine O'Connor, Canton
 DIVISION 2
The Bulldogs had a magical 22-0-1 season that culminated in the Division 2 state championship. The road to the title also included a win over perennial power Watertown in the EMass final. A graduate of Canton High, where she was a Globe All-Scholastic in field hockey, O'Connor has compiled more than 100 wins in eight seasons at the helm. When field hockey isn't on the agenda, she enjoys spending time with her two young sons. Of her team this season, O'Connor said, ``This season was a total team effort, and I am proud to have been a part if it.''

Players of the year

Bonnie Shea, Walpole
 DIVISION 1
Having the top player in Division 1 is nothing new for the Porkers, and neither is being state champion. But this was a redemption year after last season's ``disappointing finish'' in the sectional final. This season, Shea was the backbone of a Porker defense that won another Bay State League title and avenged last year's loss to Falmouth in the sectional final. In the process, Shea was named Bay State Herget MVP, and was a league all-star selction for a third straight year. She is also a Bay State All-Star for lacrosse and runs indoor track. She plays club field hockey for the Cape Ann Coalition. She is an honor roll student and has committed to playing field hockey next year for Northeastern.
Meghan Wheeler, Canton
 DIVISION 2
The accolades keep coming for this Bulldogs star. She was named Hockomock League MVP for a second straight year while scoring 16 goals and 12 assists. She also led her team to a fourth straight league title and carried the Bulldogs to the Division 2 state final. In the final game, she brought home a state championship, scoring the winning goal in overtime on a penalty stroke for a 2-1 win. She spends much of her free time honing her skills, having traveled to Holland to play as well as playing for the Cape Ann Coalition and participating in the Bay State Games. She plays lacrosse in the spring. She is an honor roll student and will continue her field hockey career at UConn in the fall.

The All-Scholastics

Whitney Annicelli, Duxbury
 CENTER MIDFIELD
In a sports-rich school such as Duxbury, Annicelli is a standout. This year the senior captain led the Dragons to an undefeated season in the Patriot League and a semifinal appearance in the tournament. On the field, she was always a scoring threat, totaling a school-record 44 points to reach 104 career points, also a school record. She is a three-sport athlete, and serves as captain of the girls' ice hockey and lacrosse teams. A high honors student, in her spare time she enjoys snowboarding and playing club lacrosse. She plans to attend prep school next fall before moving on to college.
Maggie Ciarcia, D-Y
 CENTER BACK
Ciarcia doesn't have the gaudy scoring numbers of others - her trade is to prevent those players from putting up numbers, and she does it as well as anybody. This year she was an Atlantic Coast League All-Star, leading Dennis-Yarmouth to a 9-3-8 record, and she earned selection to the Best of 60 All-Star Game as well. She is a stellar student and a National Honor Society member, and a Barnes & Noble poetry contest winner. She also runs track for the Dolphins and enjoys singing and art in her free time. She has been a Bay State Games participant, and played in the USFHA National Festival.
Amanda Gonsalves, Harwich
 CENTER BACK
During Gonsalves's three years on the team, the Rough Riders have gone undefeated through the South Shore League, and next year, Gonsalves will be back to finish off a stellar career. This season, however, she was a major offensive force. She tallied 36 goals and 16 assists in the regular season for 52 total points, good for tops in EMass. A two-time SSL All-Star, she was a part of last year's sectional title squad. She is also an SSL All-Star in basketball, and has won two straight state titles on the hardwood. She is a high honors student who hopes to attend law school or medical school after graduation.
Lauren Hartnett, Walpole
 CENTER FORWARD
Walpole field hockey is like Brockton football: Championships and great players are practically a birthright. This year, Hartnett helped lead Walpole back to a familiar place, the state championship. She was the leading scorer in the Bay State League with 25 goals and 10 assists, while garnering her second Bay State All-Star selection. She is also a member of the basketball team, with whom she has won two state titles, giving her four for her career. In her spare time, she plays AAU basketball for the Bay State Magic and club field hockey for the Cape Ann Coalition. She will attend Quinnipiac in the fall.
Jane Kelleher, Harwich
 CENTER MIDFIELD
Winning games has become a common occurence for Kelleher, no matter what the sport is. In four years of field hockey, she has never lost a South Shore League game, and she has won two sectional titles. She is a two-time SSL All-Star and a team captain. She is also a member of the basketball team, winning two state titles, and is captain of the softball team, reaching the sectional final twice. She is an honor roll student and likes to travel in her spare time, as well as play in summer leagues for her various sports. She is looking at Springfield, James Madison, and Providence for college and expects to study athletic training.
Nicole Murphy, Dedham
 LEFT MIDFIELD
The loss of three All-Scholastics from last year's state championship squad proved to be a smooth transition, thanks to Murphy's presence. The junior midfielder helped Dedham to an 18-3-1 record and a trip to the sectional final. She was also named a Bay State All-Star for the second time. She is an honors student and a National Honor Society member. She is also involved in SADD, and enjoys cross-country skiing and running in her spare time. She is a Bay State All-Star for the indoor and outdoor track teams.
Danielle Pandolfo, Reading
 SENIOR
With the advantage of coming from an athletic family, it was only a matter of time before Pandolfo took center stage on the playing fields. She gained attention this fall, carrying the Rockets to the North sectional title while scoring six goals and two assists in the tournament. She finished her career as a four-year starter and three-time Middlesex League All-Star. She is also a four-year starter, and two-time all-star on the softball field. She hones her talents playing field hockey for the Cape Ann Coalition, and summer softball for the Middlesex Krush. A high honor student, she will attend BC in the fall on a softball scholarship.
Elizabeth Perreault, Falmouth
 MIDFIELD
Falmouth will have a huge void to fill next year without Perreault. A two-time All-Scholastic, this year she led Falmouth to a 22-1 season that included an Atlantic Coast League title, and a trip to the sectional final before it fell to eventual South and state champion Walpole. She was named an ACL All-Star for the fourth straight year, while scoring two goals and nine assists from her midfield spot. She is also a four-year starter on the lacrosse team. Her hobbies include cooking, running, and playing the piano. She is in the top 10 percent of her class and will continue her field hockey career at BU in the fall.
Alexandra Quinn, Watertown
 FORWARD
Making her second straight appearance on the All-Scholastic squad, Quinn's graduation will bring signs of relief from opposing goaltenders. This year she scored 44 goals and 15 assists, with seven goals and five assists in five tournament games. Watertown won the Division 2 North title and finished the year at 20-2-1. She is a two-time Middlesex League MVP, and led the league in scoring twice. In the last two years, she amassed 83 goals and 30 assists. She has won two gold medals playing in the Bay State Games and plays for the Cape Ann Coalition. She is also an all-star on the girls' hockey team. She will continue her field hockey career next year at Northwestern University.
Andrea Slaven, Bishop Fenwick
 RIGHT WING
The leading scorer in the Greater Boston League hailed from the conference's only Catholic school. Slaven compiled 11 goals and 14 assists in leading the Crusaders to a 15-2 record and the quarterfinals of the tournament. A three-time GBL All-Star, she finished her career with 25 goals and 38 assists. She is also a member of the basketball team, for whom she is a Catholic Central League all-star. She plays AAU basketball and enjoys going to the gym in her free time. She is looking at a number of Northeast-10 schools as college choices, as well as Endicott, and Fitchburg State.
Alyssa Sliney, Nauset
 GOALTENDER
A brick wall in goal this season for the Warriors, Sliney had a 0.95 goals against average, stopping 190 of 209 shots. She led her team to a 14-5 record and the quarterfinals of the state tournament. She is a two-time ACL All-Star and will be back next year for a run at Falmouth in the league. She is also an ACL All-Star in softball and basketball for the Warriors. In her spare time, she enjoys the beach, going to the movies, and playing summer softball. She is also an outstanding student, routinely earning high honors.
Elizabeth Stanford, A-B
 GOALTENDER
Another outstanding goalkeeper, Stanford frustrated opponents this season with a 0.36 goals against average, allowing just 10 goals and posting 11 shutouts. She led the Colonials all the way to the sectional final with wins over Gloucester, Bishop Fenwick, and Methuen, before they fell to Reading in overtime. She is a two-time Dual County League All-Star and posted 10 shutouts last season. She is also a member of the gymnastics team. She is a National Honor Society member, a student council member, and a peer leader. She hopes to continue playing field hockey at a Division 3 school next year.
Kristine Stigas, Canton
 GOALTENDER
The old saying that offense wins games and defense wins championships could be applied to the Bulldogs, and if so, it was Stigas's defense that won them a state title. She allowed only two goals in six tournament games and 12 goals all year. In the EMass final, she shut out a powerful Watertown team. She is a two-time Hockomock League All-Star and has been the leading goalie each of the last two years. She is an honor roll student and National Honor Society member. She also plays varsity basketball and softball, and club field hockey for the Cape Ann Coalition. She hopes to attend a Division 1 school for field hockey after graduation.
Ashley Waters, Amesbury
 MIDFIELD
For four years, Waters has been lighting up the scoreboard for the Indians, and this year was no different. She notched 55 points this season to lead the league for the fourth time. She finished her career with 60 goals and 79 assists (which ranks second highest nationally). She was a three-time CAL All-Star and won three league titles, and this year, she led the Indians to the sectional final. Depsite all the gaudy numbers, field hockey may not even be her best sport. She is a two-time CAL MVP in softball and a Globe All-Scholastic and she is also an all-star on the basketball team. She will attend Maine on a softball scholarship in the fall.
Jayna Whitcher, Falmouth
 FORWARD
Falmouth posted another outstanding season, thanks in part to the scoring talents of Whitcher. During the regular season, she collected 16 goals and 20 assists in leading the Clippers to an undefeated season and an Atlantic Coast League title. Along the way, she earned ACL All-Star recognition. The run continued for the Clippers all the way to the sectional final, where they fell to Walpole. Before falling to the Porkers, Falmouth recorded wins over Stoughton, Dartmouth, and New Bedford. She is also a member of the indoor and outdoor track teams. She is an excellent student, sporting a 3.82 GPA, and earning high honors accolades. She will attend Yale in the fall.
