Boys' soccer

Players of the year

Will Haywood, Newton North
 DIVISION 1
  The only All-American in EMass this year hailed from the traditional soccer power in Newton. The honors kept on piling up for Haywood. He was MVP of the Bay State Conference, and the Massachusetts Player of the Year. In addition, he was a member of the All-New England team. His presence in the back made the Tigers a very strong defensive team. As a freshman and sophomore, he was a member of the Rivers School NEPSAC Class A (2001) and Class B (2002) championship teams. In his spare time, he enjoys playing guitar, and plays club soccer for the FC Greater Boston Bolts. He will attend Vermont.
Jon Wentworth, North Andover
 DIVISION 2
  One of the most proflific goal scorers in all of EMass this season, Wentworth netted 36 goals for the Knights, bringing his career total to an astounding 57 goals. He also helped lead the Knights to a first-round upset of GBL champion Arlington in the tournament, and an appearance in the semifinals. He was a four-year starter and a two-time Cape Ann League all-star, and led the CAL Large in scoring each of the last two years. This year he was the league MVP. He is a three-year starter on the baseball team and a league all-star. He is also a member of the ski team and a two-time league all-star. An honor roll student, he is looking at Stonehill, St. Anselm, St. Michael's and Springfield.
Mike DeSantis, Stoneham
 DIVISION 3
  The catalyst for the wire-to-wire run of the No. 1 Spartans is the only two-time All-Scholastic on the team this year. For the third year in a row, he led the Spartans to the EMass title, and this year, to the Division 3 state title. He was named Middlesex League MVP for the second straight year, and finished the season with 19 goals and 17 assists. He is an honor roll student and a member of the varsity basketball team. He plays club soccer for the Appian Soccer Club and is undecided about his college plans.

Coaches of the Year

Dan Avery, Framingham
 DIVISION 1
  Winning the ultra-competitive Bay State League's Carey division is a difficult feat, winning it two years in a row is even more impressive. Avery's Flyers have been one of the top teams in EMass that ast few years and this year was no exception. Despite losing All-Scholastic Dominic Fitzpatrick in the first round of the tournament, the Flyers came together to beat highly touted Everett before falling in the semifinals. A 1974 graduate of Framingham South where he played soccer, basketball, and baseball, Avery is also the varsity baseball coach at Framingham. His comments about this season's teams were ``outstanding group, faced a lot of adversity, tremendous character.''
Whit Horton, Somerset
 DIVISION 2
  For 31 years, Horton has been the Somerset soccer coach; this year he got the ultimate retirement gift from his players. Despite entering the tournament as the 18th seed, the Blue Raiders won seven straight games and captured the Division 2 state championship, the first in school history. After starting the season 1-4-1, Horton changed the team shape and moved players into different positions and the result was a 16-2-1 final run. He is a 1970 graduate of Springfield College, where he played soccer, basketball, and ran track. He is also the athletic director at Somerset. In his spare time, he enjoys flyfishing. In his 31 years, he ran up 240 wins and had the privilege of coaching his four sons on the pitch.
Scott Thomas, Chatham
 DIVISION 3
  Just a short time ago, Chatham was not a championship contender. That is no longer the case as Thomas has helped shape the program into a winner, culminating in this year's 19-0-1 regular season, and the Mayflower League Small championship. In the last two years, Thomas has led the Blue Devils to a 31-6-5 record. He is a 1977 graduate of Nauset, where he played soccer, hockey, and baseball. He is currently the coach of the baseball team as well, and enjoys fishing when he isn't coaching. Commenting on his team this year, he said, ``Truly a great group of kids who have worked as hard at the game as any that I have coached.''

The All-Scholastics

Jason Bettencourt, Lowell
 SENIOR
  The MVP of the Merrimack Valley League had an outstanding season for the Red Raiders. He was the leading goal scorer on a team that finished second to Andover in the MVC Large. Andover was the stumbling block, ending Lowell's season in the tournament as well. Bettencourt finished the season with 15 goals and 10 assists, making him the second leading scorer in the MVC. Those stats earned him All-State and All-New England honors. He is an exceptional student, and hopes to continue his soccer career in college at a school with business management.
Matt Brown, Oliver Ames
 SENIOR
  Hockomock League teams found it nearly impossible to stop Brown and the rest of the Tigers this season. Brown led his team in scoring with 22 goals and six assists, steering his team to the Hockomock League title, and garnering MVP honors. An All-State and All-New England selection, he finished his career with 40 goals and 12 assists. He is also a member of the lacrosse team and enjoys sports and music in his spare time. An honor roll student, he hopes to attend a business school in the fall.
Joe Dattoli, Danvers
 SENIOR
  Only two teams in EMass have won consecutive sectional titles, and Danvers is one of them. Dattoli has been an integral part of the Falcons' two-year reign as Division 2 North champions. This year he was named Northeastern Conference MVP while leading his team to its second straight conference title. He amassed 24 goals and 11 assists and finished his career with 44 goals and 21 assists. He is also an NEC All-Star in baseball, and enjoys music, and spending time with friends in his spare time. He is a World Language National Honor Society member and is undecided about college.
Josh Deane, Lincoln-Sudbury
 SENIOR
  After a tough season last year, Lincoln-Sudbury made a return to the top of the Dual County League and Deane was a major part of the Warriors' resurgence. He had nine goals and nine assists to tie for the league lead in scoring. As a sophomore, he was part of a Division 2 state championship squad and led the DCL in scoring. He has been a three-time DCL All-Star. This year he was named an EMass All-Star, and the top player of the seven DCL players named to the squad. In his spare time, he enjoys hiking and playing the guitar. He plays club soccer in the offseason for the Greater Boston Bolts. He plans to attend Middlebury in the fall.
Mark DeSantis, Stoneham
 JUNIOR
  For most of the season, Mark's brother Mike got all the attention, but Mark soon got some deserved recognition of his own as the goals started piling up. In the tournament, he led the Spartans to the state title, scoring the winner in the state final. He also netted three goals in the sectional final. For the season, he netted 28 goals and added 21 assists. He has been a three-year starter, and his teams have won three straight Middlesex League titles and three straight EMass titles. He is an honor roll student, and a member of the basketball team. In the offseason, he plays club soccer for the Appian Soccer Club, along with his older brother.
Dominic Fitzpatrick, Framingham
 SENIOR
  Had Fitzpatrick not suffered a season-ending injury in the first round of the tournament, the Flyers might have gone even further than the semifinals. But much of what they did throughout the season, including winning the Bay State Conference, can be traced to the play of Fitzpatrick. From his center midfield spot, he netted four goals and 13 assists. He has been a two-time Bay State All-Star and led the Flyers to consecutive conference titles. He is also a member of the Boston Bulldogs club soccer team. He is a National Honor Society member and enjoys snowboarding in his spare time. He hopes to attend Bowdoin College.
Chris Lipsett, Walpole
 SENIOR
  The Carey Division gets the attention for top-flight soccer teams in the Bay State Conference, but this year, Walpole proved to be among the top squads, especially when it knocked off Weymouth for the first time in conference play. The result was a Herget Division championship for the Rebels, thanks in large part to Lipsett. He scored 18 goals and seven assists while garnering Bay State All-Star honors for the third straight year. He also helped lift Walpole to the quarterfinals of the tournament. In his spare time, he enjoys playing pond hockey, and playing club soccer for the Boston Bulldogs. He hopes to attend a business school in the fall.
Tim Murray, St. John's Prep
 SENIOR
  The only goalkeeper on the team this year was certainly an outstanding one. For the season, he sported a 0.17 goals against average, and he recorded 14 shutouts for the Eagles. He is a Catholic Conference All-Star and a member of the All-State team. His hobbies include snowboarding and art. He plays club soccer in the offseason for Seacoast United Soccer Club. He is also an outstanding student, holding a 3.7 GPA, and he is a member of the National Honor Society and the French National Honor Society. He plans to attend Providence College next year.
Greg O'Neil, BC High
 SENIOR
  To put it simply, O'Neil was unstoppable in the state tournament. The senior striker helped carry the Eagles all the way to the state title game, where they finished as co-champions with Algonquin. In the three previous tournament games, he scored seven goals, including a hat trick in the sectional final. For the season, he tallied 18 goals and 15 assists while leading the Eagles to the Catholic Conference title. He was a two-time EMass All-Star and a two-year team captain. He has a 3.6 GPA and is a National Honor Society member. He will attend Boston College in the fall.
Elmer Santos, East Boston
 SENIOR
  East Boston seized control of the city league this season, thanks in large part to the play of Santos and the enthusiasm brought by coach Lorenzo DiBennedetto. The Jets won the City League North and beat Burke in penalty kicks to capture the City Championship game. It wasn't until the tournament that the Jets suffered their first loss of the season. Santos was the scoring leader in the conference for much of the season. He also enjoys playing basketball and running track. He hopes to continue his soccer career next year at a four-year college.
Tim Walsh, Ashland
 SENIOR
  For the last three years, Walsh has been causing headaches for Tri-Valley coaches. This year was no exception as he collected 10 goals and nine assists in leading the Clockers to the TVL title, the Division 3 South title, and garnering MVP honors. He has helped the Clockers win the TVL title for three straight years as well as two South sectional titles while totaling 29 goals, and 31 assists. He is also a two-time TVL All-Star in basketball, and coaches youth basketball in his spare time. He is the class secretary and a yearbook editor. He has been an honor roll student for four years, while maintaining a 3.2 GPA. He is undecided about college.
Rob Wenham, Medford
 SENIOR
  The backbone of the Mustang defense in each of the last three years, Wenham has helped make Medford one of the dominant soccer programs in EMass. This year he led Medford to the sectional final, after getting to the state finals last year, and the EMass final as a sophomore. A three-year starter, he has been a GBL All-Star in each of those years. He finished his career with 10 goals and 24 assists, including three goals and seven assists this year. He runs indoor and outdoor track, and was a member of the Bay State Games gold medal Coastal squad this year. He is a National Honor Society member, and is looking at UMass, UConn, Brown, and URI for next year.

Girls' soccer

Players of the year

Catie Whelan, Weymouth
 DIVISION 1
  A three-time All-New England selection and a two-time All-Scholastic, Whelan's list of soccer accolades is a lengthy one. This season, she was named Bay State Conference MVP for a fourth time and topped the league's scoring ranks for the third straight year. The senior and two-year captain led the 15-4-3 Wildcats to the Division 1 South final and finished the fall with 29 goals and 14 assists for 141 career points. She is a four-time All-State selection and this season's EMass Player of the Year for Division 1. Off the pitch, she is an honor roll student who enjoys coaching youth soccer. Whelan, a 2004 All-American, will attend Northeastern on a soccer scholarship.
Michelle Sheehan, Belmont
 DIVISION 2
  A six-time All-Scholastic, Sheehan is truly among the state's elite high school athletes. In this, her third All-Scholastic soccer season, she was the No. 2 scorer in EMass with 35 goals and 24 assists. She led Belmont to an undefeated regular season (17-0-1), its first Middlesex League title in 16 years, and the Division 2 EMass final. She was the Division 2 Player of the Year and earned her second nod onto the All-New England team as well as her third All-State and EMass All-Star honors. Sheehan finishes her BHS soccer career with 182 points. She is also a three-time ice hockey All-Scholastic and was the state's leading scorer as a freshman and sophomore.
Sara Hourihan, Lynnfield
 DIVISION 3
  In addition to being named Cape Ann League and Division 3 EMass Player of the Year, Hourihan notched 30 goals and 19 assists this fall, leading 22-0-2 Lynnfield to a second consecutive Division 3 state championship. The Pioneers, who won the 2003 title, were cochamps this year, and Hourihan earned her first nod onto the All-New England team. With a career total of 64 goals and 51 assists, she led the Pioneers in scoring for the last three years. She's not just a standout soccer player. Hourihan was on Lynnfield's 2004 EMass champion basketball squad and ran on the state champion 4x400 relay in 2003. She will attend the University of New Hampshire next fall.

Coaches of the Year

Fred Podbelski, Marshfield
 DIVISION 1
  Podbelski had to postpone retirement for a few extra weeks this fall, as his team made a run to the Division 1 State final. The Rams finished 18-2-4 and according to Podbelski, their success was the result of team unity, led by his assistant coaches and tricaptains. ``We have always had as our motto: `One World, One Sport, One Team,''' he said. Podbelski's 20-year career at Marshfield includes more than 250 wins, and this season, he was named both Old Colony and EMass Division 1 Coach of the Year. In his spare time, the Westfield State College graduate and former soccer, basketball, and baseball player enjoys enjoys boating, fishing, reading, and landscaping.
Nancy Foot, Wellesley
 DIVISION 2
  With a last name like Nancy Foot, the Wellesley seemed destined to be Coach of the Year some day. This season, she earned the honor after coaching the Raiders to the Division 2 state championship and an 18-1-5 record. ``[It] required a total team effort and a belief in our ability,'' said Foot. ``We had the ability all year, but we found the determination and the necessary commitment as we played deeper into the tournament.'' In her three years at the helm, the Raiders have gone 39-10-10. A native of Niskayuna, N.Y., Foot played soccer at Princeton. She is vice principal of the Pollard Middle School in Needham.
Meredith Coakley, Archbishop Williams
 DIVISION 3
  In Coakley's hands, Archbishop Williams has become a regular fixture in the Division 3 South tournament. This fall the Bishops (16-5-2) earned their third consecutive trip to the EMass finals. Coakley's teams have qualified for the tournament in seven of her eight years at the helm. A 1993 graduate of Marian High School in Framingham, Coakley was a four-year starter and senior captain at Sacred Heart University. She took over the Archies' program after her graduation in 1997 and has enjoyed a steady flow of talented players and successful teams. ``I have the benefit [of] coaching the greatest kids, which is a real testament to the school and the parents,'' Coakley said. ``It's because of them that I am here.''

The All-Scholastics

Amy Caldwell, Braintree
 FORWARD
  The youngest member of the All-Scholastic team, this sophomore is already a two-time All-State and Bay State Conference All-Star. She is also the youngest Massachusetts player to receive All-New England honors this fall. With 21 goals and 16 assists this season, Caldwell was tops in the ultra-competitive Bay State Carey for the second year in a row and broke her own school record for single-season scoring. She is a three-year member of the Massachusetts Olympic Development team and has played with the South Coast Scorpions club for six years. Caldwell is also a Bay State Carey All-Star in gymnastics and track, a student council representative, and an honor roll student.
Jessi Foreman, Wayland
 RIGHT MIDFIELD / FORWARD
  Add Foreman to the growing list of multi-sport All-Scholastics. Already a track standout, Foreman made the most of her senior campaign on the soccer field, captaining Wayland to a 13-4-5 season and earning her first nods onto the All-New England, All-State, and EMass All-Star teams. She is a four-year starter and Dual County League All-Star and was the Warriors' Rookie of the Year as a freshman. This season, she was the No. 2 scorer in the league. Foreman is also a basketball captain and two-time league MVP, as well as the 2004 state champion in the 100 meter dash, an event in which she earned All-Scholastic honors.
Jackie Graham, Winchester
 MIDFIELD
  Versatility and a team-first attitude are two of this senior captain's biggest strengths. When traditional powerhouse Winchester struggled early in the season, Graham, a forward and center midfielder for most of her career, agreed to move to back to sweeper, and her presence there made a huge difference. The Sachems upset top-seeded Andover in the quarterfinals of the Division 1 North tournament and finished 9-4-7. Graham is a repeat Middlesex League, EMass, and All-State All-Star. She is a member of the Spirit of Mass. Soccer Club and will play at James Madison University in the fall.
Nicole Hayward, Marshfield
 GOALKEEPER
  Allowing just one goal in 12 regular-season games (0.08 goals against average), Hayward easily established herself as the top goalkeeper in EMass this fall. The senior tallied 18 shutouts on the season and was instrumental in 18-2-4 Marshfield's run to the Division 1 state final, allowing just two goals in six tournament games. She was named to both the EMass All-Star and Old Colony League All-Star rosters. In the offseason, she plays for the Marshfield Wave and other club teams and also plays varsity basketball for the Rams. She is an honor roll student and hopes to continue playing soccer in college.
Ashley Knight, Rockland
 FORWARD / CENTER MIDLFIELD
  Knight ranked among the top scorers in EMass throughout the fall, finishing the regular season at No. 7, with 23 goals and 15 assists. She was the top scorer in the Patriot League for the second time and led the Bulldogs to a league title and a 17-1-2 record. She is a two-time EMass All-Star and was also named to the All-State team this year. She plays soccer with the Olympic Development Program and two club teams and runs the 300, 600, and 4x400 meter relay events in indoor track. Knight is an honor roll student and hopes to study physical therapy or sports medicine and play soccer at a Division 1 college.
Kaitlin Lamothe, King Philip
 MIDFIELD
  Lamothe, the Hockomock League MVP, capped her career at King Philip as the soccer powerhouse's No. 3 all-time scorer with 88 points. As a freshman and sophomore, she played on the Warriors' 2001 state champion and 2002 EMass title squads, and as a senior, she led the league in scoring with 27 goals and three assists. She earned her first All-New England and All-State honors, repeated as an EMass All-Star, and added a third league all-star nod to her resume. Lamothe is a three-season captain who was KP's 2004 basketball MVP, a three-time league triple jump champion, and a Division 3 state champ at 200 meters.
Jackie Powers, Andover
 STRIKER / MIDFIELD
  In this, her second season as an All-Scholastic, Powers led Andover to a 15-3-1 record and a fourth consecutive Merrimack Valley Conference championship. Shifting between midfield and striker, she was always an offensive threat, tallying 26 goals and 17 assists this fall to break the school single-season and career scoring records (110 career points). Powers is a repeat All-State selection as well as a three-time MVC All-Star. She is both a soccer and basketball captain, and playing guard, helped Andover to 2003 and 2004 state titles. She is being recruited for both sports by Division 3 colleges and for soccer by Division 1 schools.
Sydney Stoll, Dedham
 FORWARD
  One of the fastest and most aggressive players in EMass, Stoll had a breakout season, earning All-New England status and leading Dedham (19-1-3) to the Division 2 South final. Her progression through the Bay State Conference All-Star teams tells the story of a rapidly improving player: In 2002, Stoll was a second team all-star, last year she made first team, and this season, she was named MVP of the Herget Division. She also made the All-State and EMass All-Star teams and tallied an impressive 29 regular-season points in the low-scoring Bay State Carey. She is also a league all-star in track and enjoys water sports and snowboarding.
Becca Taylor, Lincoln-Sudbury
 GOALKEEPER
  After graduating 10 players, 2003 state champ Lincoln-Sudbury needed some time to adjust this fall, going 8-2-7 in the regular season. With Taylor in net, the Warriors got the breathing room they needed. She recorded 11 shutouts and a 0.52 goals against average and was voted top goalie in the Dual County League. In the tournament, the well-adjusted L-S squad charged to the Division 1 North final and Taylor did not allow a single goal en route. She was voted team MVP and made the EMass All-Star and All-State lists. When she's not in the net, Taylor maintains a 3.8 GPA and enjoys playing the flute, singing, and theater.
Jackie Vickers, Norwell
 FORWARD
  This high-scoring Clipper is just a junior. Vickers (103 career points) was the top scorer in EMass this fall, finishing the regular season with 35 goals and 18 assists. Tournament included, she had a 59-point season while leading Norwell to a 20-1-1 record. A three-time EMass and South Shore League All-Star, Vickers was the 2004 league co-MVP. She also plays soccer with the Mass. Olympic Development Team, the Cape Cod Crusaders, and the Charles River United. She is on the Norwell basketball team and hopes to study sports medicine and play soccer in college.
Angelamaria Viscomi, Newton North
 MIDFIELD / SWEEPER
  This two-year captain led Newton North in a thrilling comeback season and a run to the Division 1 EMass final. After the Tigers failed to qualify for the 2003 tournament, Viscomi stepped into a new role this fall, shifting from offensive midfield to sweeper. She was among the state's best at that position and proved instrumental in North's 14-4-5 record, its tie for the Bay State Carey title, and Division 1 North crown. She was named to the EMass and All-State first teams and is a three-time BSC All-Star. Viscomi is a six-year member of the Mass. Olympic Development Soccer Team, on the varsity basketball and track teams, and is involved in several community service organizations.
Brianna Wilson-Byrne, Wellesley
 FORWARD
  In a fitting career finale, Wilson-Byrne scored Wellesley's final goal in a 3-0 win in the Division 2 state championship game. The tally, her 28th point of the season, brings her career total to 53. A senior captain, Wilson-Byrne is a three-time Bay State Conference and Division 2 EMass All-Star, and she has twice been named to the All-State team. She is also a standout track athlete who holds five school records and was a Bay State Carey All-Star at 400 meters last spring. She spends her winters on the parquet, where she is also a league all-star and a team captain. Wilson-Byrne is an honor roll student and hopes to play soccer at a Division 1 school.
