NEPSAC All-Scholastics

Keara Thomas, GDA
 ISL CROSS-COUNTRY
If dominance is measured in wins and loses, Thomas would be the fiercest competitor in the Independent School League. She is undefeated in three years and scored first-place finishes at the ISL championship and the Division 3 NEPSTA championships. The league MVP broke the school record with a time of 19 minutes 7 seconds at the ISL meet. A three-year All-New England Team selection, Thomas is also GDA's three-time MVP. She also likes to dance, and participate in track and field. Her teammates have chosen her as captain of next year's cross-country team. In the meantime, she will join some of the state's top runners in the Lynx Elite Athletic Club.
Patrick Johnson, St. Paul's
 ISL CROSS-COUNTRY
Patrick Johnson's opponents in the Independent School League may well be happy to see him go after he ran roughshod over them this season. The 6-foot, 155-pound senior won a share of the ISL Division Championship with a time of 16 minutes 21 seconds, helping his team finish second. He finished third as a junior. Johnson has earned ISL honors twice and this season, he was named to the All-New England Prep School Track Association team. He is a strong student, making second testimonials at St. Paul's for the past three years. Johnson is on the Nordic skiing and track teams and lists rock and mountain climbing and slack lining as his favorite hobbies.
Nellie Poulin, St. Mark's
 ISL FIELD HOCKEY
Poulin was named the Most Valuable Player for her St. Mark's team for the second consecutive year this season, and she amassed 31 points to earn the honor. The center/forward scored 23 goals and had eight assists, claiming a spot on the Independent School League All-Star team for the third consecutive year. This fall, she led St. Mark's to the finals of the Class B tournament, where the Lions fell to Brooks, 1-0. In her three-year career at St. Mark's, Poulin netted 41 goals and 19 assists. The senior is also on the honor roll. Poulin also plays for the ice hockey and softball teams, and is team captain of softball. She was an ISL All-League Honorable Mention in 2005. She enjoys skiing and snowboarding. She remains undecided on her college plans.
Adam Farkes, BB&N
 ISL FOOTBALL
Farkes was a triple threat on offense for BB&N. The 6-foot-2-inch, 190-pound quarterback ran for touchdowns, passed for touchdowns, and returned kicks for touchdowns, collecting 19 TDS this season. Farkes averaged 230 yards of total offense per game. He had five interceptions and 14 pass breakups on defense. He was the team's long snapper and returned kickoffs and punts. Leading his team (5-3) to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 1974, Farkes was co-MVP of the league and was named to the All-League team. ''The best high school player I ever coached,'' said BB&N coach John Papas. The Back Bay resident also plays baseball at BB&N and is undecided on his college plans.
Mark Crane, Belmont Hill
 ISL SOCCER
Most of the time, the offensive players get all the glory, but Crane commanded attention as a sweeper/defender at Belmont Hill. An Independent School League first-team member, Crane is a four-year starter and two-time all-league selection. The high honor roll student earned is a National Merit Commended Student. Crane also participates in outdoor track. The 6-foot, 165-pound senior enjoys hanging out with friends and snowboarding and plays on the Inter SC Boston team in the summer. Crane will attend Amherst College next fall.
Andrew Olsen, Thayer Academy
 ISL SOCCER
School records were dropping like flies around Olsen during this soccer season. His 21 goals and 15 assists both set school marks. His efforts led Thayer to the Independent School League championship, and he was named ISL Most Valuable Player as well as Offensive Player of the Year. Only a junior, the 6-foot, 160-pound forward is a member of the Super-Y National team. He played for the 2004 Massachusetts state champions, the South Shore Blazers. Olsen will play with the Blazers and the Cape Cod Crusaders over the summer. A high honor roll student, Olsen's hobbies include music and snowboarding. He remains undecided on his college plans.
Melida Alvarez, BB&N
 ISL SOCCER
Alvarez earned Player of the Year honors in her senior year, recording 21 goals and five assists for the Buckingham, Browne & Nichols team, which reached the semifinals of the Class A NEPSAC tournament before losing to Loomis-Chaffee. The 5-foot-6-inch forward is a four-year All-League selection and a two-time pick for the All-State team. She has amassed 60 career goals for the Knights. She also plays for the basketball and softball teams at BB&N. Her hobbies and interests include music and being with friends and family. Alvarez, a Saugus resident, remains undecided on her college plans, but has her eye on Boston University. In the summer, she plays for the Boston Renegades.
John Nordin, Concord Academy
 EIL CROSS COUNTRY
This junior's achievements mirror those of Eva Luderowski, his Concord Academy teammate, which means Concord had a pretty great season. Nordin was the Eastern Independent League champion, setting the pace on the Pingree School course and completing the hilly 3.1-mile run in 17 minutes 19 seconds. He was named the league's Most Valuable Player, and he finished fourth in the NEPSTA Division 4 race. He led Concord Academy to a second-place finish in the EIL regular season and in the tournament. The 6-foot-1-inch, 156-pound Nordin also plays lacrosse at Concord. His other activities include rock climbing and skiing and only a junior, he remains undecided about his college plans.
Eva Luderowski, Concord Academy
 EIL CROSS-COUNTRY
A senior running her first season of cross-country, Luderowski was one of the top prep competitors. The 5-foot-5-inch, 115-pound runner was the league's Most Valuable Player and won the NEPSTA Division 4 championship, setting a course record at Millbrook School. All her cross-country achievements are almost overshadowed by her lacrosse feats. A 2005 Academic All-American for lacrosse, Luderowski is an All-League and NEPSWLA All-Star. The lacrosse team captain was selected to Lower New England Teams 4 and 3 in the US Lacrosse National High School Tournament in 2004 and 2005. Luderowski was also the Lake Placid Ironman Athlete of the Week. Aside from dominating in cross-country and lacrosse, she likes chorus, backpacking, and skiing.
Max Campion, Beaver Country Day
 EIL GOLF
If his last name had an extra ''h,'' it would be very fitting. The 6-foot-2-inch Campion pummeled the competition in the Eastern Indpendent League this year, losing just one match. In the league tournament, he won the title by four strokes. He has multiple NEPGA victories and many other top-three finishes. He is the CYO tournament champion and finished in the top 25 in the 2005 FCWT 13-15 National Championship. Only a freshman, Campion doesn't play other sports and said, ''I concentrate on golf.'' He finds pleasure in boating and fishing and plans to participate in National Golf Tours over the summer. In the distant future, he hopes to attend Wake Forest.
Dana Bergstrom, Lex. Christian
 EIL SOCCER
From her midfield/forward position, Bergstrom scored 31 goals and 29 assists this season. That impressive total was enough to earn her the Eastern Independent League Most Valuable Player award for the third year in a row. She carried her team to the EIL championship and an appearance in the NEPSAC finals. For her career, the junior has 94 goals and 159 points and has also been an All-Scholastic three times. Bergstrom was a 2004 National Christian School First-Team All-American and LCA has had a 50-5-3 record in her tenure. The honor roll student also plays lacrosse.
Thomas Magnuson, Bancroft
 EIL SOCCER
This 6-foot-2-inch, 195-pound central midfielder contributed nine goals and eight assists this season, putting his career totals at 24 goals and 31 assists. The honor roll student also excels in other sports for Bancroft: varsity basketball (first team all-star, most valuable player, sportsmanship award, more than 1,000 points) and varsity baseball (first-team all-star, MVP, sportsmanship award). His hobbies and interests include reading, music/dance, volunteering, and fund-raising for scleroderma. In 2005, he participated in the Bay State Games in basketball for Central Mass and played for Worcester West AAU basketball.
Adrienne Marois, Bancroft
 EIL FIELD HOCKEY
As captain of the Eastern Independent League champions, Marois netted five goals and six assists from her center-midfield position. Marois is an EIL first-team All-Star and a four-time Bancroft Most Valuable Player. For her career, Marois has netted 21 goals and 29 assists, earning two EIL championships, two EIL Player of the Year honors, and two Globe All-Scholastic honors. She is an honors student who also plays varsity basketball (sportsmanship award, most improved player) and varsity softball (most valuable player, team captain). Marois, a senior, will attend Providence College next fall.
John Preis, Phillips Exeter
 PREP WATER POLO
While some may think water polo is reserved for ''The OC,'' John Preis has brought the best the sport has to offer to the East Coast. An imposing 6-foot-1-inch, 240-pound junior from Los Angeles, Preis averaged three goals a game this season in leading Exeter to its ninth straight title. He scored nine goals in a semifinal game against Phillips Andover and notched four goals in the title games against Hotchkiss. The league's leading scorer, he was named league MVP and named to the New England Championship team. In addition, he plays for the Rose Bowl team in California. Preis is on the swim team and plays trumpet for the Jazz and Concert band.
TJ Thompson, Phillips Andover
 PREP SOCCER
Edward Thompson, known to his friends as TJ, needs no introduction as far as his opponents are concerned. An All-American, All-New England, and Smoyer Cup MVP winner, the 6-foot-1-inch, 155-pound senior netted 15 goals and 8 assists this season. The Atkinson, N.H., resident takes part in the United Soccer League's Super Y League and the Olympic Development Program Regional Select team, where he was a personal pool selection in 2002 and 2003. Thompson, a varsity player for four years, is a winner of the Andover Eaton Prize for academic excellence and is headed to Brown University. He plays golf and basketball and enjoys drawing and painting. In the summer, he competes for Seacoast United Premier, State Cup champions for the past six years.
Ariel Williams, Loomis Chaffee
 PREP CROSS-COUNTRY
Williams was the top runner in prep cross-country this season. She won the NEPSTA Division 1 championship, a step up from her seventh-place finish the year before, and carried her team to a third-place finish. She also scored a first-place finish in the Shaler Invitational at Williston-Northampton, where she ran her personal best in the 5K of 18 minutes 51 seconds. Loomis won the Founders League championship this season, and Williams, the team captain, placed second in the championship race. She runs track as well, placing third in the 1,500 at last year's NEPSTA Division 1 championships. Williams sings in the school's concert choir and in school musicals, and is a member of the Loomis Chaffee Dance Company.
Nick Blixt, Deerfield
 NEPSAC CROSS-COUNTRY/DIV>
Deerfield senior Nick Blixt wasn't just the fastest man on campus, he was the fastest in New England. Blixt won the New England Prep School Track Association Division 1 cross-country championships, crossing the finish line of the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes 16 seconds. Blixt outdistanced his nearest competitor by 10 seconds and averaged 5:15 splits on the course at Taft School. Blixt holds the school record for Deerfield's cross-country course, as well as school records in the 1,500 meters and 3,000 meters. He will attend Yale.
Bailey Sanders, Miss Porter's
 PREP VOLLEYBALL
Sanders was honored with New England MVP honors after a tremendous senior season. She was also named team MVP, an NEPSFGVA All-Star, and the December 2005 Scholar-Athlete of the Month for Volleyball Magazine. She totaled 183 kills, 112 blocks (2.11 per game), 107 digs, 36 aces, and 6 assists to lead the team in kills, blocks, and aces. In the last three years, she tallied 485 kills, 235 blocks, 268 digs, 177 aces, and 13 assists. As a junior, Sanders was a NEPSFCVA All-Star. She has been named to the honor roll for every academic quarter and is a Princeton Book Award winner. Sanders also is the three-time varsity softball and swimming MVP. She will attend UMass-Amherst.

NEPSAC football MVPs

Greg Harris, Trinity-Pawling
 RUNNING BACK/CORNER BACK
Trinity-Pawling cruised to a 9-0 season and a New England Class A title and having this 6-foot, 185-pound running back on its side was a big reason why. Harris averaged 9 yards a carry, totaling 1,033 yards for the season, with 16 touchdowns. He caught two touchdowns and threw a 74-yard score in the championship game against Phillips Andover. All these exploits earned him Erickson Conference Offensive Player of the Year honors. After beating Phillips, 42-26, Pride coach David Coratti praised Harris and his entire offense. ''We have a lot of weapons on offense,'' said Coratti. ''You have to watch a lot of things. You can't just look to stop one because if you do, you'll get burned by the other guys.'' At Mount Vernon High School in New York last season, he gained 1,000 yards on just 85 carries with 12 touchdowns. He is being recruited by Toledo and is also on the track team.
Barry Gallup Jr., Belmont Hill
 ISL FOOTBALL
A lot of high school football players do it all, but not all of them do it as well as Barry Gallup. The senior running back, safety, kick and punt returner scored 26 touchdowns and led his team to an Indpendent School League title. The ISL Most Valuable Player had 1,700 yards rushing, 500 yards receiving, and averaged 10 yards per carry. He scored three touchdowns in the Lorden-Sampson Bowl, a 46-36 loss to Brunswick. Gallup, who has 70 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in his career, was named Gatorade Massachusetts Player of the Year and is a finalist for the National Player of the Year award to be announced in mid-December. ''Barry is an exceptional young man who leads by example,'' said Belmont Hill coach Kevin Fleming. ''He is respected by his peers, has high character and is committed to excellence.'' In addition to football, Gallup is captain of the track and field teams, where he is an All-New England performer, and he is honorable mention All-ISL in hockey. He has achieved high honors with a 3.5 GPA, scored a 1430 on his SAT's and is a National Merit Commended Student. He has played classical piano for 11 years, for which Fleming calls him a 'true Renaissance Man.'' Gallup will attend Notre Dame next year on a football scholarship.
Kevin Decker, Brunswick
 CLASS C
Only a junior, Decker owns a perfect 26-0 record as a starter, a run stretching back to his freshman year. The 6-foot-3-inch, 175-pound slinger, who was an All-Scholastic last fall, has led Greenwich, Connecticut-based Brunswick to three consecutive New England championships. He completed the season with 2,051 yards and 30 touchdowns on 120-for-199 (60%) passing and a QB rating of 116. For his career, he has 4,143 yards and 53 touchdowns. He was a Sports Illustrated preseason All-American junior to watch and was named Class C player of the year last season as well. In a 46-36 win over Belmont Hill, Decker completed 31 of 55 passes for 417 yards and five touchdowns. Up until that point, Belmont Hill had only given up 62 points for the entire season, but Decker shredded its secondary with scoring passes of 13, 17, 38, 10, and 28 yards. He even ran for a key two-point conversion in the fourth quarter. Decker also plays basketball.
