Girls' swimming
Coach of the Year
Lois Margeson, Reading
![]() |
When Margeson calls this a historic season for Reading, she isnt kidding. The Rockets broke six team record, ranging from a 1-year-old mark to an 18-year-old mark. The one record that really mattered was the 11-1 slate Reading posted en route to a Middlesex League championship, a third-place finish in the North sectionals, and a fourth-place finish at the state championships. In 18 years, Margeson has amassed a 144-41 record and calls this years team talented, gifted, and dedicated athletes. A 1974 graduate of Plymouth State College, Margeson enjoys swimming, reading, sewing, and her grandchildren in her free time.
The All-Scholastics
Amanda Cecere, Chelmsford
![]() |
Cecere made her mark in this, her junior year, capturing first place at the state tournament in the 100-yard freestyle. She is also a member of the states second-place 200 individual medley team. The two-time Merrimack Valley All-Conference Selection was named her teams Most Valuable Player in her sophomore year. She likes to snowboard and golf. The honor roll student also enjoys watching hockey. Cecere wants to swim in college and hopes to go into dental hygiene. Shell keep her swimming skills fresh with the Magnus Aquatic Group.
Caitlin Doherty, Andover
![]() |
If you know anything at all about girls high school swimming, you know about the accomplishments of Doherty and her Andover teammates. Doherty, last years Swimmer of the Year, came back to nab two more state championship titles this year, in the 100 fly and the 200 IM. She also is part of the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay champions, along with being a state qualifier in every event. The seniors career totals make her a 13-time state champion (seven individuals, six relays) and a high school All-American. She is an honor roll student who enjoys singing and will attend Boston College in the fall. Doherty swims with the Magnus Aquatic Group.
Erika Fernandes, Bishop Stang
![]() |
Despite her sectional and state championships in the 50 free, Fernandes doesnt consider herself a one-trick pony. She placed fourth and second, respectively, in the sectionals and state in the 100 free and is a member of the sectional and state championship 200-free relay teams. It was her second straight relay championship, she has also been part of a winning 200 medley relay team. The three-time Southcoast All-Star holds three varsity Bishop Stang records. Fernandes doesnt stray far from the water as she enjoys going to the beach in her free time. She plans to swim at college and will participate in Southcoast Aquatics over the summer.
Julie Gauvin, Bishop Stang
![]() |
Gauvin will need a deep-tissue massage after carrying around all her state championship medals. She won state titles this season in the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200 freestyle relay, and the 200-medley relay. She claimed the sectional titles in the 100 breast, the 200 medley relay, and the 200 free relay. Gauvin also holds the UMass-Dartmouth pool record in the 100 fly with a time of 58.96 seconds. The honor roll student is considering San Diego State, University of Tampa, and John Hopkins. In the summer, she stays near the water, swimming for SouthCoast Aquatics and going to the beach and surfing.
Jill Kearns, Milford
![]() |
Undefeated during the regular season in individual events, Kearns won her first state title this year with a victory in the 500 freestyle in 5 minutes 9.24 seconds. She also claimed a second-place finish in the 200 individual medley at the state championships. The sophomore also finished first in the 200 IM and second in the 100 butterfly at the Southern Conference championships and nabbed two first-place finishes (100 fly, 200 IM) at the South sectional championships. In 2004, Kearns was named Milfords Rookie of the Year, finished second in two events at the states championships (200 free, 100 fly), and qualified for Junior Nationals. She is a high honor roll student and trains with the Shawmut Aquatic Club.
Kristi Korsberg, Andover
![]() |
One would think such a powerful team like Andover would be loaded with senior talent. Not so, and Korsberg, a sophomore, tied for first with Chelmsfords Katelyn Martin in the 200 free at the Division 1 state meet. She also nabbed victories on the 200 and 400 free relays and a third-place finish in the 200 fly. Korsberg has six state titles in two years and two All-Scholastic nods as well. The Junior National qualifier is a high honors student as well. Korsberg swims with the Magnus Aquatic group and participates in the Bay State Games in the summer.
Katelyn Martin, Chelmsford
![]() |
When you see two tags underneath an All-Scholastic swimmers name, you know she has to be pretty good. The state co-champion in the 200 free and the state champion in the 500 free, Martin set the Merrimack Valley Conference record for the latter event. The sophomore is a three-time state champion (in her freshman year she won the 500 free as well) and a two-time Globe All-Scholastic. She is also a two-time MVC Swimmer of the Year and is a US Open and Junior National Qualifier. The high honor student plans to go to college when its her time, but for now, she will join her fellow All-Scholastics swimming at the Magnus Aquatic Group.
Rachael Martinez, Chelmsford
![]() |
After placing third in the state championships as a sophomore, Martinez finished a disappointing seventh the next year. She didnt let that disappointment linger as she nabbed the top spot this year, also finishing first at the sectionals. The 5-foot-2-inch senior also holds two school records in diving: the six-dive (258.70) and 11-dive (428.40) records. Martinez is a member of the National Honor Society who likes to hang out with her friends. She has two goals for college: diving and majoring in biology. Martinez has received the gold medal in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives in both the 2004 and 2005 Bay State Games. Over the summer, she will participate in Charles River Diving.
Laura Moriarty, Methuen
![]() |
If you started high school at the same time as Moriarty and were hoping that your breaststroke skills might net you a state championship, you might want to transfer to a different state. Repeating the feat she achieved as a freshman, this sophomore again won the 100 backstroke at the Division 1 state meet. She also placed second in states in the 100 butterfly. She has broken nine individual and two relay records for her school, and was named team MVP for the second year in a row. The Merrimack Valley Conference Swimmer of the Year is a high honor student who swims year-round for the New England Barracudas.
Alicia Negrotti, Central Catholic
![]() |
It must be hard for Negrotti to keep her numbers straight when shes compiling her swiming resume. This seasons stats include a Division 2 state championship in the 200 free and the 100 free, a sectional championship in the 100 free, a second-place finish in the 200 IM, and a first-place finish in both the 100 fly and the 100 breast at the Merrimack Valley Conference championships. Negrotti also has the MVC meet record in the 100 breast and six individual school records. Stay with her, she also has four school relay records, two All-Scholastics nods, multiple all-conference and school Most Valuable Player honors. To help her keep it straight, she hangs out with friends. She will attend Northeastern University in the fall.
Amy OBrien, Lexington
![]() |
OBrien, a 5-foot-4-inch freshman, wasted no time in carving her name into Lexingtons record books. She owns the school record in the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly, and is the Middlesex League champion in both events. After winning the North sectional title in the 50 free in 24.70 seconds, she claimed the state title in the 50 free in 24.55 seconds. She also placed sixth at states in the 100 butterfly. OBrien has eschewed dancing and soccer to focus on swimming with hopes of competing in college. She swims year-round for the North Shore Swim Club.
Danielle Parretti, Milford
![]() |
The Milford High aix-dive record was getting old for Parretti, so she decided to break it this season, setting a record of 266.20 points The 4-foot-10-inch senior had an undefeated dual-meet season. Parretti carried that momentum into the postseason, where she was the Southern Conference Champion, placed second in the South sectional, then grabbed first at the Division 2 state championships. This was the second first-place state finish for the two-time All-Scholastic. The National Honor Society member is also a gymnast and a Level 9 Eastern National Qualifier. She is considering Boston College, George Washington, the University of New Hampshire and the University of Rhode Island.
Candice Peak, Andover
![]() |
Peak qualified at anything that involved getting into the pool her season times this season qualified her for every event at the state championships. She was the sectional and state champion in the 100-yard backstroke and the Merrimack Valley Conference champion in the 50 free, an event she placed third in at states. She won state championships in the 200 free and 400 free relays. The four-time MVC All-Star also holds the state record in the 200 medley relay and was named the 2004 MVC Swimmer of the Year. She has participated in the US Open in 2004 and 2005. The honor roll student trains with the Magnus Aquatic Group.
Caroline Vogel, Notre Dame (H)
![]() |
Younger sister means nothing in this space. Sister of fellow All-Scholastic Jennifer, Caroline Vogel has not been left out of the limelight. The freshman (thats right) is the state champion in the 100-yard backstroke and the 400 free relay. She has qualified for the US Open and for the YMCA Nationals. Vogel has been successful for a while, she holds the New England record for the 200 backstroke for the 11-12 age group. She is also a four-time YMCA National Qualifier and a YMCA Scholastic All-American. An honor roll student, she swims for the South Shore YMCA club team and is also a Bay State Games Champion.
Jennifer Vogel, Notre Dame (H)
![]() |
Vogel likes to repeat herself, at least when it comes to winning swimming championships. The defending state champion in the 200 IM and the 400 free relay, she came back to win again this season in both events. The 5-foot-10-inch team captain is also a three-time US Open qualifier, a two-time Senior National qualifier, a three-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American, and a 10-time YMCA Scholastic All-American. Vogel, older sister of All-Scholastic Caroline, is a member of the honor roll. The senior is a Bay State Games champion. She swims for the South Shore YMCA swim team and is a five-time participant in the YMCA Summer Nationals. She will head to the University of Maryland in the fall.
The relays
Andover

![]() |
Ellen Cody (sophomore), Tiffany Petzold (junior), Kristi Korsberg (sophomore), and Candice Peak (senior) won the 200 free at the state championships with a time of 1 minute 41.00 seconds. Their predecessors, the 1990 Andover team, holds the state record in the event (1:38.26). But this seasons quartet came in second behind Acton-Boxboro last year, and the runner-up finish must have placed a fire under these four returning swimmers, who shaved a second off their 2004 time. Andover also won the North sectional title, in 1:41.60. With almost 20 combined state championship titles under their belts and all but Peak, who will graduate in 2006, returning, dont look for the Andover girls to relinquish their title any time soon.
Bishop Stang
![]() |
With less than a 10th of a second to spare, Bishop Stangs Erika Fernandes, Julie Gauvin, Amy DOlympia, and Jackie Grenon defeated Notre Dame Academy in the 200 individual medley relay in the South sectional final, winning in 1 minute 53.36 seconds. At the state championship, the quartet decided to leave a little more breathing room, about half a second, defeating NDA once again, with a time of 1:52.29. Grenon, a junior, holds the Stang record in the 500 free. Fernandes, a sophomore, was state and sectional champion in the 50 free. DOlympia, also a sophomore, finished sixth in the 100 free at states. With the gang in tact, except for Gauvin (state champion in four events), who is currently mulling her college plans, Stang hopes to repeat but with a little more space between first and second next time.
Andover

The state championship 400 free relay team has some familiar faces; scratch that, it has some household names. Caitlin Doherty (Swimmer of the Year) and Candice Peak (two-time All-Scholastic) were the senior leadership on a team that won the state title in 3 minutes 38.77 seconds, just a bit better than their North sectional victory in 3:39.20. This win was a repeat for Doherty, Korsberg, and Petzold (Peak replaced teammated Ellen Cody this year), as the Andover squad who won last years 400 free in 3:37.97. Doherty and Peak will graduate, Kosberg and Petzold hope for a return visit next fall.
