Boys' cross-country
Players of the Year
Ryan Collins, Mansfield
![]() |
Collins kept a low profile at the beginning of the season and didn't run in the first three major EMass meets, but he sure turned it on at the end of the season. At the EMass meet, he ran the fastest time of the day (15:36). A week later at the All-State meet, he again ran the fastest time of the day (15:49), which set a course record for the Northfield Mountain course. Collins completed a triple-crown effort this season with an individual Hockomock League meet championship. He was the only boy from EMass to qualify for the Foot Locker National Cross-Country championship in San Diego. Collins is an honors student and enjoys snowboarding.
Gabe Pacione, Hamilton-Wenham
![]() |
If you were an opposing runner, you didn't want to run hills against Pacione. The junior possessed an extra gear going downhill that few runners could match. He showcased his devastating downshift as he descended Franklin Park's Bear Cage Hill in the Boston Invitational, overtaking the rest of the pack to finish in first place in 16:05. Running in the All-State meet at Northfield Mountain, site of the infamous Hemlock Hill, Pacione again used his extra gear to beat the competition in a first-place, 16:29 effort in the Division 2 race. He won the Cape Ann championship and captured second place in the Bay State Invitational and the EMass Division 4 championship.
Coaches of the Year
Mike Glennon, Brookline
![]() |
Glennon led Brookline to four team victories this season (the Bay State championship, the EMass Division 1 meet, the Boston Invitational, and the Bay State Invitational). His team was undefeated in the league (11-0) and was ranked first in the MSTCA coaches' poll most of the season. Making his achievements more remarkable is the fact that Glennon was working with a relatively young team (four top runners were juniors). He oversaw the development of Robert Gibson into one of the state's elite runners and saw previously unheralded junior Chris Mercurio grow leaps and bounds. At the All-State meet, Brookline finished third. Glennon has two children and enjoys playing golf.
Domenic Finelli, Swampscott
![]() |
Swampscott didn't have any top-five runners on its team, but it has a reservoir of talent. Finelli's team went 10-1 during the regular season (the school's best record in 15 years). This season was a family affair, as there were two sets of siblings on the team (Dan and Sam Rakoc, and James and Andrew Keeter). Swampscott didn't even win its own conference, but came on strong at the end of the year to win Division 2 titles in the EMass championships and the All-State meet. At All-States, three of Finelli's runners finished in the top 20. The future looks bright, because five of Swampscott's top seven runners are returning next year. Finelli has two children and enjoys hiking and skiing.
The All-Scholastics
Mark Amirault, Xaverian
![]() |
Though he didn't repeat as Division 1 runner of the year, Amirault capped his high school career with a stellar senior campaign. He started off with a bang, winning the Manchester (N.H.) Invitational (15:45) and the Boston Invitational (15:30). A knee injury toward the end of the season slowed him, but an injured Amirault was still one of the best runners in EMass. He used his vaunted kick at the end of the EMass meet to win in 15:47. At All-States, he crossed the tape fifth in 16:25. He also runs indoor and outdoor track. Amirault got an A in every class he took in high school and will be attending Princeton next fall.
Peter Asaro, Gloucester
![]() |
Asaro was the Northeastern Conference individual champion and won the league's MVP award. He placed third at three races this season: the Division 2 race of the Manhattan Invitational, the EMass Division 2 meet (16:05), and the All-State meet (16:17). He anchored his team to a fifth-place showing at All-States. He runs indoor and outdoor track and is a two-time runner-up in the Division 2 mile championship. His personal record in the mile is 4:21 in outdoor track. He enjoys going to the beach.
Chris Brown, Chelmsford
![]() |
At the beginning of the season, Brown hit the ground running, setting a personal record with a time of 16:21 at the 5K Franklin Park course, which was good for 11th place. The 5-foot-10-inch, 145-pound Brown followed up with an eighth-place effort at the EMass Division 1 meet. In the All-State meet at Northfield Mountain, he finished 15th in a time of 16:41. Brown was one of the best runners to come out of the Merrimack Valley Conference. He captured third place at the MVC individual championships.
Paul Corcoran, Catholic Memorial
![]() |
A Catholic Conference All-Star the last two years, Corcoran captured fourth place at the Catholic Memorial Invitational with a time of 16:28 in the Division 2 race. He ran to a fourth-place finish (16:27) at the EMass meet at Franklin Park. At All-States, he was 12th in a time of 16:34. Corcoran also runs outdoor track and was a Catholic Conference All-Star last year. Corcoran is a high honor-roll student and a member of the National Honor Society. He enjoys volunteering and playing basketball and soccer.
Matt Dewey, Catholic Memorial
![]() |
In any major race this season, you could count on Dewey finishing in the top five. He was fourth in the Boston Invitational (16:00), second in Division 2 in the Catholic Memorial Invitational (16:03), and second inthe EMass Division 2 meet (16:04). He finished sixth at All-States in 16:26. Dewey was the Catholic Conference individual champion and has earned all-conference honors three years in a row. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, and a high-honor student. He likes playing soccer and basketball.
Pat Fullerton, Haverhill
![]() |
An All-Scholastic last year, Fullerton is back. He dominated the Merrimack Valley Conference, going undefeated in league meets and winning the MVC individual championship in 16:22. Not surprisingly, He was named the MVC Division 1 runner of the year. Fullerton won the Catholic Memorial Invitational in 16:03 and ran a 15:43 (a personal record) at the Boston Invitational, good for third place. He was fourth in the EMass meet (16:20). Fullerton also runs indoor track and runs a 4:16 mile. He is a high honor roll student.
Robert Gibson, Brookline
![]() |
Gibson was Brookline's top runner and led his team in scoring. The 5-foot-11-inch Gibson won the individual Bay State championship and led Brookline to the team title. He ran the Bay State Invitational in 16:22, good for second place. In the EMass meet, he ran a third-place time of 16:00 at the 5K course en route to Brookline's team championship. He finished seventh overall in Division 1 at All-States in 16:26. Last spring, Gibson won the indoor track Class A 2-mile title with a time of 9:26. An honors student, he enjoys skateboarding.
Kevin Gill, Brockton
![]() |
At 6 feet, 2 inches, Gill literally and figuratively looks down on the competition. He finished in the top two in four of the major meets, scoring second-place finishes at the Boston Invitational, the EMass meet, and the All-State meet. He won the Bay State Invitational at Northfield in 16:20, fending off a late kick by Brookline's Robert Gibson. A month later at All-States, he shaved 21 seconds off his time at the same course, finishing in 15:59. Gill is the reigning state champion in the outdoor mile with a school-record 4:14.
Patrick McAllister, Marian
![]() |
As the reigning Division 2 runner of the year, McAllister didn't repeat this season, but he turned in quite an impressive performance. He won second in the Division 2 race at the Boston Invitational (16:17). At the Brown Invitational, he ran a 15:52 on the 5K course. His one victory was in the EMass championships when he ran a personal-best 16:08 in the Division 4 race. At All-States, McAllister was robbed of a bid to win the Division 2 race after he was tripped in the first 50 yards of the course. He was thrown off his usual fast pace, but recovered to salvage a 14th-place finish in 17:11. He's in the National Honor Society.
Carlos Montrond, Brockton
![]() |
Montrond and teammate Kevin Gill formed arguably the most devastating 1-2 punch in EMass this season. In any race they ran together, you could count on the pair finishing one right after the other. Montrond finished in the top five in three of the major meets this season. He was fifth in the Bay State Invitational (17:00), fifth in the EMass meet (16:20), and fourth in the All-State meet (16:19). In each those races, Montrond crossed the tape seconds after Gill. Montrond runs winter and spring track and enjoys basketball.
Dan Roark, Dracut
![]() |
After playing football his freshman and sophomore years, Roark went out for cross-country this season. Judging by his performance, it's safe to say he'll be back next year. He was sixth in the Bay State Invitational (17:00) at Northfield Mountain, then cut his time to 16:33 on the same course in the All-State meet (11th-place finish). At the EMass Division 2 meet, he was fifth in a time of 16:30. He was named the Merrimack Valley Conference Division 2 runner of the year. He is an honor roll student with a 3.88 GPA.
Theodore Vrountas, Sandwich
![]() |
Vrountas improved his 5K time by nearly a minute, from a 17:14-personal best last year to 16:20 this year. He ran that time twice: once for a ninth-place finish at the Boston Invitational and once for a third-place finish at the Catholic Memorial Invitational. He finished third in the Bay State Invitational in 16:48 and sixth at the EMass meet in 16:33. He went undefeated in league meets this year. He is an honors student and likes running in road races on Cape Cod and riding his bike. He plans to run cross-country in college.
