Boys' soccer
Players of the Year
Ben Slingerland, St. John's Prep
![]() |
The vital cog for the Eagles this season, the midfielder started the season scoring seven goals in his first eight games. But when coach Dave Crowell decided he needed more balance in the middle of the field, Slingerland accepted a more defensive role. The Catholic Conference MVP and three-year varsity starter finished the season with 10 goals and eight assists, the final score a powerful header in the final, giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead and assuring the trophy's return to Danvers. The senior was one of three players from Massachusetts to be selected an All-American. A member of the National Honor Society as well as an AP Scholar, Slingerland plays club soccer for Seacoast United. He is undecided about his college plans.
Jean Fauchet, Concord-Carlisle
![]() |
His coach labeled him the ''best player in Division 2'' and after his performances in the state tournament, it would be hard to disagree. Fauchet was the catalyst for a Patriot team that played some of the most scintillating soccer in the postseason, leading his team all the way to the Division 2 state championship. The midfielder led the Dual County League in scoring with 15 goals and 14 assists, giving him a four-year total of 40 goals and 31 assists. The Concord-Carlisle captain was voted team MVP and best offensive player on a unit that scored 19 goals in its final three games. An All-State selection, Fauchet plays club soccer for FC Greater Boston Bolts and is undecided about his college plans. He enjoys sports and traveling.
Caio Correa, Nantucket
![]() |
No player in the state could rival Correa's offensive production this season. The 5-foot-10-inch, 140-pound midfielder from Rio de Janeiro led Eastern Massachusetts in scoring with 34 goals and 26 assists, giving the sophomore a whopping 104 points in just two years of playing at the high school level. He now will return to Brazil to further his soccer career. A Coaches Association All-State selection, Correa led Nantucket to a 17-4-1 record. The Whalers eventually lost in the Division 3 South final, but it was the farthest any Nantucket team has traveled in the postseason. Over the summer, Correa played in an adult summer league, where he was top scorer with 29 goals and took home MVP honors. He also plays basketball.
Coaches of the Year
Dave Crowell, St. John's Prep
![]() |
Crowell had plenty of reasons to smile following his team's 4-1 win over two-time defending champ Algonquin in the Division 1 state final. His Eagles wrote a storybook ending to a season that started with high expectations. They fulfilled those expectations and more, finishing the year 21-0-2 and playing at a level no opponent could match. A former Division 3 coach of the year in 1998 with Lynnfield, Crowell credits SJP's success this season to ''the players' outstanding work ethic and their willingness to put team above self.'' The Salem State grad was also named Division 1 coach of the year by the EMass Soccer Coaches' Association.
Ray Pavlik, Concord-Carlisle
![]() |
Pavlik's Patriots did what any coach asks of his team. He described this year's Division 2 state champions as a group that ''got better as the season progressed, and played some amazing team soccer in the state tourney.'' That level of play saw Pavlik's team score 19 goals in their final three games of the tournament, beating defending champ Stoneham in the process, and finishing the year 18-2-3. The 2005 Division 2 EMass Coach of the Year, Pavlik played four years of soccer at Bates. He enjoys golfing, hiking, and spending time with his wife, Kendra, and three kids, Mackenzie, Ray, and Kylan.
Brent Munroe, Lynnfield
![]() |
Munroe described his team as the, ''hardest working team I've ever coached.'' The Pioneers rode that effort all the way to an EMass Division 3 championship, before losing in the state final in heartbreaking fashion to Bartlett, 1-0. A penalty kick 12 seconds from time was all that stood between Munroe's team and championship glory. Lynnfield finished the year 16-6-2, good for second place in the Cape Ann Small Division, and their fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament. A Marblehead High graduate, Munroe played soccer at Franklin Pierce and has been a high school coach for 15 years.
The All-Scholastics
David Ferriero, Medway
![]() |
The 6-foot-1-inch striker led the way as a senior-laden Mustang team rolled all the way to the Division 2 EMass final, where it lost to eventual state champion Concord-Carlisle. Though a defender for his club team, FC Greater Boston Bolts, Ferriero had no trouble acclimating to a goal-scoring role for Medway, which finished the season 16-3-2. He led the Tri-Valley League in scoring in both his junior and senior year, and was named this year's league MVP. Ferriero is a four-year honor roll student and enjoys playing tennis and lacrosse. He will play soccer at Wheaton.
Stephen Ibañez, Danvers
![]() |
Coaches in the Northeastern Conference will be pleased Ibañez won't be returning to play for Danvers next season. The four-time NEC All-Star and two-time league MVP compiled 129 points in his career, including 23 goals and 11 assists this season as Danvers went 12-6 during the regular season before falling to North Andover in the Division 2 tournament. An All-State selection as a junior, Ibñez was selected to the All-New England team this year. He plays club soccer for the Mass Aztec club. He is undecided on his college plans.
Gaston Kelly, Hingham
![]() |
Perhaps the most accomplished player on this list, Kelly finished his four-year varsity career with the Harbormen with an astounding 101 goals and 37 assists. He was named the MVP of the Patriot League for the third consecutive time, leading Hingham to a 15-5-2 record, taking the Harbormen all the way to the Division 2 South finals, where they lost to Medway, 2-1. An All-American selection, Kelly is also a three-time league all-star in indoor track, and a member of the National Honor Society. He plays club soccer for the Cape Cod Crusaders and hopes to study medicine at Holy Cross, Tufts, or Williams.
Mike Kennedy, Lynnfield
![]() |
The dangerous attacking threat for Lynnfield's Division 3 Eastern Massachusetts championship team, Kennedy also led the Cape Ann League in scoring with 26 goals and 10 assists, earning player of the year honors for the league. Only a junior, the All-State team selection already has two league titles to go along with his 38 career goals. He also plays basketball for the Pioneers, and was a Cape Ann League All-Star for the 2005-06 season on the hardwood. Kennedy is a recipient of the National Latin Award, and as a junior, he still has some time before he needs to start making any college decisions.
Bryan Longo, Lexington
![]() |
There was a reason St. John's Prep coach Dave Crowell said the key to his team's victory over Lexington in the Division 1 North final was, ''stopping No. 10.'' That player, of course, was Longo, Lexington's captain, who orchestrated so much of the Minutemen's powerful attack this season. Scoring 10 goals and dishing out 16 assists, the Middlesex MVP and All-State selection led Lexington to a 20-3 record and a league title. Also a three-time league all-star in indoor track, Longo plays club soccer for FC Greater Boston Bolts. He plans to play soccer at Seton Hall or Brown.
Matthew Shea, Hanover
![]() |
One half of the Indians' prolific Shea combination, Matt had nine goals and 28 assists this year, leading Hanover to an undefeated regular season. His most memorable game was his two-assist effort in the Indians' 3-2 win over Hingham, the first time in school history that Hanover defeated the Harbormen. A three-time league All-Star, Shea is ranked 14th in his class with a 3.99 GPA. He plays club soccer for the Cape Cod Crusaders and is a member of the Mass ODP team that will compete in the National Finals in March.
Douglas Murray, Canton
![]() |
He didn't light up the scoreboard, but Murray was the commanding midfield presence that led the Bulldogs to within a game of the Division 2 South finals, before they lost to champion Medway. A two-year captain, Murray led Canton to a 13-2-5 record, claiming the Hockomock League title as well as a league MVP award. The All-New England selection is the treasurer of the National Honor Society and captain of the Bulldog basketball team. He is unsure about his college plans, but hopes to study physical therapy.
Tim Prior, St. John's Prep
![]() |
The leading scorer on the best team in the state has the credentials to earn a place on this list, and Prior is no exception. The senior captain, who scored 16 goals and handed out 13 assists this season, was the provider or finisher for almost every goal the Eagles scored in the postseason, including both goals in the Division 1 North final against Lexington and two assists in the state final against Algonquin. A three-year letter winner, he was selected to the All-State team and his 3.8 GPA earned him a place in the National Honor Society. Prior also runs track at SJP, and plays club soccer for Seacoast United. He hopes to play soccer next year at Bowdoin.
Steve Rose, Acton-Boxboro
![]() |
Rose was the creative influence on a Colonial team that was one of the best in Division 1 this season. A-B seemed a likely bet to repeat as Division 1 North champion until Lexington derailed those hopes with a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals. The early exit could not deny Rose the accolades he earned. He was selected DCL MVP, scoring 12 goals and handing out nine assists to lead A-B to a 16-3-1 record. An All-State selection, Rose plays club soccer for FC Greater Boston Bolts, and is a member of the Mass ODP team as well as the ODP Region 1 team. He will play soccer at Seton Hall, where he plans to be a business major.
Peter Rosoff, Framingham
![]() |
The 6-foot-2-inch, 205-pound senior allowed only 10 goals in 22 games this season for a .45 goals against average, and he had 14 shutouts. He led the Flyers to a 14-4-4 record, even scoring a goal. The Bay State League MVP and All-New England selection went 11 games without conceding a goal as the Flyers vaulted into the Division 1 North semifinals, where they lost, 1-0, to state champ St. John's Prep. Rosoff plays volleyball for the Flyers, earning Bay State League honors. He plays soccer for the Boston Bulldogs, and counts fishing and table tennis as hobbies. He is undecided about college.
Ryan Shea, Hanover
![]() |
The scoring half of the Shea strike force, Ryan wrote his name in Hanover soccer history this season, scoring 35 goals and dishing out 18 assists to give him 145 career points (76 goals, 69 assists), which makes him the all-time leading scorer in the program's history. The senior captain scored two goals in Hanover's historic 3-2 win over Hingham and is a three-time Patriot League All-Star. He plays club soccer for the Cape Cod Crusaders, and will travel with his brother and the Massachusetts ODP team to Texas this March to compete in the ODP National Finals. He and his brother Matt have not yet decided on their college plans.
Marcello Silva, Malden
![]() |
Malden won a share of the school's first Greater Boston League title, and Silva was a major reason for the Tornadoes' success. The league MVP, he led the GBL and Division 1 in scoring with 26 goals and 13 assists this season, pacing the Tornadoes to a 14-4-2 record. In the state tournament, Malden beat Beverly in a preliminary rouund contest before falling to Haverhill. An All-State selection, the senior has amassed 81 points in his four-year varsity career. Silva also runs indoor track at Malden, and plays club soccer for Dynamis United F.C. He is headed to Southern New Hampshire University.
