Girls' cross-country

Players of the Year

Jessica Barton, Newton North
 DIVISION 1
A lot of runners hate running hills. Not Jessica Barton. The senior harrier said she preferred the steep hills of Northfield Mountain, where she finished first at the All-State meet in 19 minutes 14 seconds, to the mostly flat terrain of Franklin Park, where she also finished first at the EMass meet in 18:49. It didn't matter if she was running up hills, down them, or sprinting across flat land, Barton dominated in every state meet she ran this season, never having a race come down to the wire. With her victory at the Bay State Invitational (19:49), she made it a triple-crown season. A tri-athlete and an honor roll student, Barton will attend Wake Forest.
Keely Maguire, Triton
 DIVISION 2
She's back. Maguire, the Division 2 runner of the year last year, captured the honor again. A junior, Maguire padded her resume after winning the Division 2 individual state championship last year. This season, Maguire won the EMass meet in Division 3 with a time of 18:34. She finished second at All-States (18:47) to Emily Jones of Bromfield. The two had one of the best rivalries in the state and both will be back to challenge each other next year. At the Brown Invitational, she finished fourth in 18:12. She has lost only one dual meet in her career. ''She has an incredibly hard work ethic,'' coach Joe Colbert said. ''She's gifted no doubt, but she matches her talent with her work ethic.''

Coaches of the Year

Jim Hoar, Dennis-Yarmouth
 DIVISION 1
Jim Hoar has compiled a 204-18 record in 30 years at D-Y. This season was undoubtedly his finest. His Dolphins won the first state championship in school history, despite injuries to two of their best runners. Colleen Wetherbee, who sat out part of the season with a shin injury, said her coach ''understands all the little things,'' like having his team run the sand dunes at Newcomb Hollow in Wellfleet to prepare for the Northfield Mountain course or pairing a younger runner with Wetherbee in a hotel room before the All-State meet. His teams have won the Atlantic Coast League the past six years. He likes riding his bike around Cape Cod and spending time with his wife and daughters.
Neil Levine, Oliver Ames
 DIVISION 2
Levine, in his second season as head coach, has made Oliver Ames the class of Division 2. He led his team to an undefeated record in the Hockomock League (8-0) as the Tigers won the regular-season title and the league meet championship. His team had a second-place finish at the Boston Invitational, and a third-place showing at All-States. Levine has slowly and carefully developed freshman Jenna Davidner into one of the best runners in the state. A former cross-country runner at Randolph High School, Levine continues to compete and runs in about 35 road races a year. He is scheduled to be running the Honolulu Marathon today. He owns an Irish pub in Easton.

The All-Scholastics

Caitlyn Crosby, Dennis-Yarmouth
 JUNIOR
After Colleen Wetherbee, D-Y's top runner last year, went down with an injury, the Dolphins needed someone to step up. Caitlyn Crosby answered the call. She didn't come in first in any of the major meets, but she consistently finished in the top five and kept her team in position to win. Crosby was D-Y's top runner all season and led the team in scoring. She set a personal record at the State Coaches' meet with a third-place time of 19:17. Her performance in the All-State meet (fourth, 19:47) was crucial in her team's first state championship in school history.
Jenna Davidner, Oliver Ames
 FRESHMAN
Davidner almost didn't go out for cross-country. She practiced with the soccer team early in the season, but changed her mind at the last minute. It turned out to be a good decision. Davidner established herself as one of the best runners in Division 2, setting course records at four sites during league competition. ''Effortless'' is how coach Neil Levine described the running of this harrier. She won the MSTCA State Coaches' Division 2 meet at Wrentham in 19:05, then finished third at All-States in 19:10. She was second at the Boston Invitational in 18:48.
Sydney Fitzpatrick, Billerica
 SENIOR
Fitzpatrick led her team to a Merrimack Valley Conference championship and was named league runner of the year. Her best finish was a 19:24 second-place showing at the Catholic Memorial Invitational. In the All-State meet, she finished sixth in 19:54. She runs indoor and outdoor track and has run a 5:05 mile. A senior, Fitzpatrick is a member of the National Honor Society and enjoys watching movies and playing soccer. She is still undecided about college but is leaning toward the University of New Hampshire.
Cara Giaimo, Dover-Sherborn
 SENIOR
Last year, Giaimo led her team to its first All-State appearance in school history. She propelled the Raiders to a second appearance this year. Giaimo was undefeated in dual meets this season and was named co-MVP of the Tri-Valley league. At the EMass meet, she ran a second-place time of 19:25 in the Division 4 race. Giaimo runs track and has been the Division 4 Eastern 2-mile champion for the past two years. An AP scholar with Honors and member of the National Honor Society, she enjoys playing the guitar and is in a jazz band.
Dana Jamieson, Lincoln-Sudbury
 JUNIOR
Lincoln-Sudbury, a team that had no seniors on its roster, was regarded as one of the best Division 1 teams in the state this season, winning the Bay State Invitational, the Boston Invitational, and the EMass meet. A large part of the Warriors' success can be attributed to Dana Jamieson. A junior, this was Jamieson's first year running cross-country, but she emerged as the Warriors' top runner, finishing second in the Bay State (19:53) and eighth in the EMass meet (19:43). She was third at All-States (19:32), leading her team to a second-place finish. She lists painting as a hobby.
Emily Lanois, Hamilton-Wenham
 SOPHOMORE
Her performance last season made Lanois an All-Scholastic, and this year was more of the same. She won the Bay State Invitational in 19:37 at Northfield Mountain, then shaved 25 seconds off her time at the same course at All-States (fourth, 19:12) to lead her team to a second-place finish. She also ran a 19:12 at Franklin Park in the EMass meet and her team finished first overall. A sophomore, she holds the school record in the mile with a time of 5:03. Lanois is a high honor roll student with a 4.3 GPA. She enjoys skiing, sailing, and soccer.
Amanda Leahy, Lowell
 SENIOR
In September, Leahy ran a 19:53 in the Boston Invitational at Franklin Park. A month later, she knocked 23 seconds off her time (19:30) at the same course in the EMass meet. At All-States, she ran a 20:16, which was good for 14th place. Her second-place performance at the conference championships helped earn her a spot on the Merrimack Valley All-Conference team. Leahy, a senior, is a high honors student and is ranked in the top 10 of her class. She enjoys writing and travel and is undecided about college.
Kristen Mahoney, Weymouth
 JUNIOR
The 5-foot-5-inch, 100-pound Mahoney captured third place at the Boston Invitational with a 19:28. She ran 19:42 (seventh) at the EMass championships at Franklin Park, and at the All-State meet, she ran the 5K course in 20:05, which was good for 10th place and helped pace her team to a seventh-place finish overall. Mahoney also runs indoor and outdoor and track. She set the Weymouth school record for the 2-mile in track with a time of 11:39. Her personal record in the mile is 5:28. She is an honor roll student.
Stephanie McNamara, North Attleboro
 SENIOR
McNamara set a personal record for a 5K course at the State Coaches' meet in Wrentham with a time of 19:15, good for second place. She placed 12th in the All-State meet in 20:06. She was second at the league championship meet. McNamara is captain of both her winter and spring track teams and was the Hockomock League outdoor champion in the 2-mile last season. A senior, she is interested in science and for the past two summers, she has worked as a research assistant in pathology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Caroline O'Loughlin, Boston Latin
 SENIOR
O'Loughlin said people have confused the spelling of her last name with ''O'Laughlin'' over the years. If they still don't know how to spell it correctly, they haven't been reading the newspaper. A three-time All-Scholastic, O'Loughlin has garnered gallons of ink this season, finishing first at the MSTCA Invitational (18:58) and second in the EMass meet (18:56). She gave Jessica Barton a run for her money at All-States and led for the first mile before finishing second in 19:26. O'Loughlin trains for races by running Heartbreak Hill, and will be attending Dartmouth College.
Colleen Wetherbee, Dennis-Yarmouth
 SENIOR
The theme of Wetherbee's season was sacrifice. The Division 1 runner of the year in 2004, Wetherbee had to shelve her individual goals after suffering a shin injury early in the season. At the EMass meet, her first race after coming back, she helped pace D-Y's younger runners and finished ninth in 19:42. ''It was like a mother hen leaving her geese,'' said coach Jim Hoar. Wetherbee, a senior, completed her swan song with an eighth place in the All-State meet as her team captured the state championship. She will run for North Carolina State.
Rebecca White, Natick
 SOPHOMORE
Rebecca White isn't tall at 5 feet, Æ inch, but her list of accolades is long. A sophomore, White won the Boston Invitational (19 minutes 22 seconds) with a furious kick in the final 300 yards at Franklin Park. She won the EMass meet (19:14), and finished third at the Bay State Invitational (20:00) and fifth at All-States (19:51). She was a Bay State League All-Star for the second year and co-MVP of the league. She set course records at Brookline, Norwood, and Natick. An honor roll student, she will run indoor and outdoor track this year.
