Girls' soccer
Players of the Year
Amy Caldwell, Braintree
![]() |
Was there ever any doubt whose face would be pictured in this space? Caldwell suffered a midseason knee injury and missed the rest of the regular season, but has anyone ever had a more dominating tournament than this 5-foot-1-inch forward? Of the 18 goals Braintree scored en route to its second consecutive Division 1 state title, Caldwell scored 12, 10 in the final four games, including four goals in the 6-1 win over Ludlow in the state final. With 25 goals and 9 assists this season, she is Braintree's all-time leading scorer with 112 goals and 58 assists. It's her second straight selection as Player of the Year. She will play for Boston College.
Erin O'Brien, Cardinal Spellman
![]() |
O'Brien certainly opened some eyes when she strung together four game-winning goals in the Division 2 tournament. The midfielder propelled the Cardinals to the state final, where they lost to Nipmuc Regional, 2-1. O'Brien, a center midfielder, scored 18 goals and added nine assists en route to being named the Catholic Central Large MVP. She amassed 53 goals and 21 assists in her career. The senior was named an EMass All-Star for the second consecutive year and was named a CCL All-Star for the third straight year. She also plays basketball, is a member of the National Honor Society, and loves to watch a good movie.
Kerri Domohowski, St. Mary's
![]() |
A four-time Catholic Central League All-Star, Domohowski was the engine behind the St. Mary's train that chugged to the Division 2 North sectional final. Domohowski, the Division 3 Player of the Year, as voted by the EMass Girls Soccer Coaches Association, had 10 goals and 24 assists this season and 35 goals and 61 assists in her career. She is St. Mary's all-time assist leader. The 5-foot-5-inch midfielder led St. Mary's (19-2-1) to the Catholic Central Large title and was the league's third leading scorer. She has been class president since her sophomore year and is ranked fourth in her class. She is also a two-time CCL All-Star in basketball.
Coaches of the Year
Paula Yanakakis, Masconomet
![]() |
In 1982, Yanakakis graduated from Masconomet, and 24 years later, she skippered her alma mater to the Division 1 state semifinals against Braintree. The Chieftains (18-3-2) controlled the flow for most of the game but allowed a goal late in the contest, which led to a 1-0 loss. In her 13 years leading the Masconomet girls' soccer program, Yanakakis has compiled a 177-62-34 record. She was a tri-sport athlete in soccer, basketball, and softball. The Chieftains were runners-up to Newburyport in the Cape Ann Large Division. Yanakakis, the CAL Coach of the Year, has tackled a more important task at home: raising three boys.
Mike Perry, Cardinal Spellman
![]() |
Perry credited the blend of young players and veteran leadership for Spellman's magical run in the Division 2 tournament, which ended with a 2-1 loss to Nipmuc Regional in the state final. ''The girls,'' said Perry who has a record of 223-114-50 and six Catholic Central Large titles in 20 years, ''were one of the most dedicated, hard-working, self-disciplined teams I've ever coached.'' Perry has been the boys' basketball coach for the last 27 years, and in the 1983-84 season, was named the Globe's Division 3 Coach of the Year when he led Spellman to a state championship. He also has been an assistant baseball coach for the last 20 years.
Bruce Emerson, Norwell
![]() |
Emerson led Norwell (18-1-5) to the most successful season in school history. The Clippers had thrilling victories in the Division 3 South sectional final (2-1 over Dover-Sherborn in two overtimes) and the EMass final (2-1 over Newburyport in OT) before a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to West Boylston in the state final, in penalty kicks. He said his Clippers ''had lots of fun, worked hard, and truly seemed to love each other as sisters.'' Coach for 23 years, Emerson has compiled a record of 245-149-56. He also coaches basketball and track. A 1960 graduate of Needham, he was a three-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and track.
The All-Scholastics
Amanda Bilas, Marshfield
![]() |
The most versatile player on Liz Grindle's staff, Bilas helped the Rams (14-6-3) edge Whitman-Hanson for the Atlantic Coast North League title. Bilas stepped up in the Division 1 South tournament as Marshfield recorded three straight shutouts before losing to Braintree, 2-1, in the South sectional final. Bilas scored five goals and added six assists this season to build her career totals to 30 goals and 15 assists. Bilas, who also runs track, is an honor roll student and has won the Gold Award for academic excellence for soccer from 2003-06. She hopes to attend Quinnipiac, Wheaton, or Saint Anselm next fall.
Jill Cammett, Norwell
![]() |
Norwell coach Bruce Emerson said Cammett ''is the backbone of this team both offensively and defensively.'' She was instrumental in the Clippers' fourth consecutive South Shore League title and their run to the Division 3 state championship game, which Norwell (18-1-5) lost to West Boylston, 1-0, in penalty kicks. The Clippers allowed only 21 goals this season, three in the Division 3 tournament. Cammett had 12 goals and three assists for career totals of 42 goals and 15 assists. Cammett has been a South Shore League All-Star for three consecutive seasons. She also plays lacrosse and runs track, and enjoys snowboarding, surfing, and teaching soccer and lacrosse to children.
Natalie Crutchfield, A-B
![]() |
Crutchfield, along with Wagner, formed one of the fastest, most potent offenses in EMass, intimidating opposing defenses all season. She is a three-time Dual County League All-Star. She was the second leading scorer in the DCL behind Wagner, with seven goals and 10 assists. Crutchfield was named to the All-State and All New-England teams. The senior captain also runs track for the Colonials and was a member of the 2005 indoor track team, which won the state championship. Crutchfield is an honor roll student who enjoys reading and community service. She will join Amy Caldwell next season on the Boston College soccer team.
Jessie DeGraan, Braintree
![]() |
DeGraan was certainly Braintree's regular-season MVP: The 5-foot-4-inch senior tallied 14 goals leading the Bay State Carey in the regular season, and she added 12 assists. She was vital to the Wamps' second straight Division 1 state title run as Braintree (16-4-2) outscored opponents, 18-3. DeGraan's career totals are 64 goals and 52 assists. She was a four-year Bay State All-Star and was named to the All-State team this season. DeGraan also plays basketball (a member of last season's state championship team), and lacrosse. An honor roll student, she hopes to play soccer in college.
Jessica Gray, Sacred Heart
![]() |
Gray provided more sparks than a Fourth of July fireworks display by ending the regular season as the leading scorer in EMass with 31 goals and 22 assists. The sparks were extinguished in the quarterfinals of the Division 3 tournament when Dover-Sherborn topped Sacred Heart, 2-1. The 5-foot-6-inch center midfielder has flourished in Wes French's upsweep offense, compiling 59 goals and 56 assists in three seasons. She was named Mayflower League MVP and a first-team All-State All-Star for the second straight season. Gray is a member of the National and Spanish Honor Societies and loves to tap and jazz dance.
Kirsten Lundquist, Masconomet
![]() |
Lundquist was the main reason the Chieftains (18-3-2) had the lowest goals against average in the Cape Ann League. The 5-foot-5-inch sweeper was one of the best defenders in the state and did the best job in the tournament covering Division 1 Player of the Year Amy Caldwell, limiting her to one goal in the state semifinals. Lundquist was named to the Division 1 EMass and All-State teams. Her most impressive numbers are 4.98 and 6: her GPA, on a scale of 5.3, and her rank in a class of 335. A member of the National and German Honor Societies, she was Masconomet's nominee for the Wendy's Heisman Scholar/Athlete/Citizenship Award. She has not made a college decision.
Kristin Mewis, Whitman-Hanson
![]() |
It's hard to believe that Mewis is a sophomore. The Atlantic Coast League North MVP for the last two seasons, Mewis led the ACL North in scoring with 21 goals and 11 assists. Whitman-Hanson (18-3) earned the top seed in the Division 1 South tournament, losing to Marshfield, 1-0, in the semifinals. The 5-foot-6-inch center midfielder has 40 goals and 16 assists in her career. She plays on the U16 National team, and, for the last three years, with the Massachusetts and Regional Olympic Development teams. Mewis, who also plays basketball, loves the beach and is interested in marine biology. She hopes to play Division 1 soccer
A.J. Millet, Westford Academy
![]() |
Chances are Westford (11-6-2) wouldn't have made the Division 1 North tournament without Millet as its last line of defense. The sophomore goalkeeper recorded seven shutouts and was the top goaltender in the Dual County League. Her career numbers are as gaudy as those of any goaltender out there. She has 17 career shutouts and a 0.59 career goals against average. Excellent numbers, but Millet also has an impressive 4.3, as in a 4.3 GPA. She is an All-State and EMass first-team All-Star and plays for the Stars of Massachusetts club. Millet also plays basketball and track and enjoys reading.
Kelly Mooney, Canton
![]() |
Mooney finished the 2006 campaign tied for seventh on the EMass scoring list with 21 goals and 15 assists. The 5-foot-8-inch Mooney was named MVP of the Hockomock League as well as Division 2 Player of the Year by the EMass Girls Soccer Coaches Association. Mooney is a member of the All-State, All-EMass, and All-New England All-Star squads. Canton (14-3-2) was the fourth seed in the Division 2 tournament. She plays for the Division 1 Tri-Valley Eagles club team. Mooney also plays lacrosse and runs track. She enjoys outdoor activities and hanging out with friends. She will attend the University of New Hampshire.
Tiffany Pacheco, D-R
![]() |
The senior captain led D-R to another South Coast Conference title and was named the SCC MVP for the second consecutive season with 31 goals and 16 assists. The 5-foot-4-inch striker surpassed the 30-goal plateau for the third consecutive season; she tallied 33 goals as a junior and 37 as a sophomore. She scored 14 in her freshman campaign. Pacheco finishes her soccer career as D-R's all-time leading goal scorer with 115. Pacheco, also an EMass All-Star, led Dighton-Rehoboth to the top spot in the Division 2 South tournament before being upset in the first round by Wellesley, 2-1. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is an avid snowboarder. She is applying to Brandeis.
Katharine Rausch, Belmont
![]() |
How often is a defender named the MVP of the league in girls' soccer? Not too often. Rausch, a junior, was named the MVP of the Middlesex League. She helped lead Belmont (14-3-3) to the Middlesex League title, dethroning Winchester, which has won the league title 26 of the last 28 years. Rausch is also an EMass first-team All-Star. Belmont was seeded fourth in the Division 2 North tournament, where they lost to Saugus, 2-0, in the quarterfinals. Rausch is a high honors student with a 3.9 GPA. In her spare time, she loves to paint, ski, and dance. Rausch also plays soccer for the FC Greater Boston Bolts.
Cassie Wagner, Acton-Boxboro
![]() |
Having trouble finding a player who led her league in scoring as both a freshman and sophomore? Well, the 5-foot-8-inch Wagner has done just that, and more impressively, in the Dual County League, one of the strongest leagues in EMass. She followed up her freshman season (13 goals, 12 assists) with 23 goals and nine assists as the Colonials (19-2) were the Globe's top-ranked team for most of the season. This is her second season as a DCL All-Star and first as an EMass first-team All-Star. She is an honor roll student who loves listening to music and she hopes to attend an ACC college.
