Coach of the Year

Marilyn Fitzgerald, Andover
 COACH OF THE YEAR
There was a time when there were no varsity sports available for girls at Andover. Fitzgerald, a 1960 graduate, calls those times the ''dark ages.'' Luckily, those times are long gone and she is coaching one of the elite varsity girls' programs in the state. This season, Andover went 12-0 and the Golden Warriors have won 94 consecutive dual meets. In her 15-year tenure as coach, Fitzgerald has won 144 meets and lost 24. Andover won its eighth straight state championship. Fitzgerald said that this team, ''had to work as a team every single day in order to pull off No. 8,'' and that it took ''depth, sacrifice and no attitude'' to do so. She loves being with her grandchildren, cooking, and vacationing at Lake Winnipesaukee.

Swimmers of the Year

Amanda Cecere, Chelmsford
DIVISION 1 CO-SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
In her last year at Chelmsford, Cecere was named Swimmer of the Year in the ultra-competitive Merrimack Valley Conference. This fall she was the only competitor to win two individual events at the Division 1 state meet, the 100 back and 100 fly. Last year, she was the 100 free state champion. She was her team's MVP as a sophomore and junior and she's been on the MVC All-Conference team. An honor roll student, she hopes to go to a four-year college and is aiming for a career in dental hygiene. She swims for the Magnus Aquatic Group.
Tiffany Petzold, Andover
DIVISION 1 CO-SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
Petzold's name should be added to the list of great swimmers from Andover. In her final season, she was co-MVP of the Merrimack Valley Conference and qualified for states in every event. She was the state champion in the 200 IM and came in second in the 100 free. In the North sectionals, she won the 200 IM and 100 free. She claimed an MVC championship in the 50 and 100 free and qualified for the junior nationals in the 200 IM. This is her fourth consecutive year as an All-Scholastic. She hopes to attend Emory University.
Jill Kearns, Milford
DIVISION 2 SWIMMER OF THE YEAR
After being named Rookie of the Year in her freshman year, Kearns knew high expectations would follow. For her junior season, she came through with victories in the 200 IM and 500 free at the Division 2 state championships and the South sectionals and broke the 200 IM record at states. She also won the 200 IM and 500 free in the conference championships. She holds the 200 IM, 100 breaststroke, and 100 fly team records. A two-time All-Scholastic, she attended the Junior Nationals in 2005 and 2006 and was team MVP last season.

The All-Scholastics

Caitlin Brewer, Burlington
 100 BACKSTROKE
To put it simply, Brewer owns the 100 backstroke competition. She's been the record-holder in the event three of the last four years. Furthermore, she holds her school's record for the 100 back, 200 medley relay, and 200 free relay. This year, she was the Division 2 state champion in the 100 backstroke, winning in 59.96 seconds. She finished second in the 100 back at the North sectional championships. The two-time Middlesex League All-Star is also a qualifier for the US sectional championships. She swims with the North Shore Swim Club.
Kristen Connors, Bishop Feehan
 100 BREASTSTROKE
It's hard enough to be a member of the National Honor Society, French Honor Society, and the Science National Honor Society, but Connors's excellence stretches beyond academia and into the swimming pool. A junior, she won the Division 2 state championship in the 100 breaststroke (1 minute 7.39 seconds) while finishing second at South sectionals. She was also a member of the third-place 200 medley relay and 400 free relay. She's also a US Open and Junior National qualifier. She swims with the Bluefish Swim Club.
Caitlin Cronin, Notre Dame (H)
 100 FREE
Just a freshman, Cronin made a huge impression in her first season in the pool for Notre Dame. At the Division 2 state championships, Cronin's time of 53.91 seconds earned her first place in the 100 free, pacing Notre Dame to the state title. The week before, Cronin took third in the 50 and 100 free at the South sectionals and she was second in those events at the conference meet. Away from school, the Kingston resident is a USA sectional and super sectional qualifier in the freestyle events and she swims for the Weymouth Waves.
Erika Fernandes, Bishop Stang
 50 FREE
Fernandes, a four-time All-Scholastic, keeps racking up titles left and right. This season, she was the Division 2 state champion in the 50 free (24.66 seconds). She finished second in the 100 free and 200 IM. Her results at sectionals were pretty similar as she placed first in the 50 free and second in the 100 free. Altogether, she has won eight state championships in her career (four individuals, four relays) while also being named the Southeastern Mass. Swimmer of the Year in 2004. She hopes to swim at a Division 1 college.
Kristi Korsberg, Andover
 200 FREE
Like most Andover swimmers, Korsberg is not used to losing. She was the sectional champ in the 200 medley relay, 200 free, and the 4x100 free relay. A junior, she qualified for states in every event and was the Division 1 state champion in the 200 free. She also finished third in the 100 fly. In the Merrimack Valley Conference, she was the 200 IM champion and finished second in the 100 fly. Korsberg is a Junior National qualifier in the 200 free, 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 fly, 100 fly, and 500 free and a US Open qualifier in the 200 fly and 400 IM.
Katelyn Martin, Chelmsford
 500 FREE
Martin wins competitions so frequently it's becoming a routine. The team MVP had a record-breaking performance in the 500 free (4:56.37) at the Division 1 state championships, and placed second in the 200 free. She won both the 500 free and 200 free in the Merrimack Valley Conference. This isn't new to Martin, who won the 500 free at states and was named MVC Swimmer of the Year in both her freshman and sophomore years. She holds the MVC record for the 500 free and has been an All-Scholastic three consecutive times.
Laura Moriarty, Methuen
 100 BREASTSTROKE
Moriarty is a national qualifier in the 100 fly and 200 fly. She is a three-time All-Scholastic, three-time MVC Swimmer of the Year, three-time sectional champion in the 100 breast, and three-time state champion in the 100 breast. She has been MVP of her team every year she's been on the team and she holds all 12 of her school's swimming records. In her junior year, she beat the record for the 100 breastroke at sectionals, where she was the 100 breaststroke and 100 fly champion. She hopes to swim at a Division 1 school and study medicine.
Amy O'Brien, Lexington
 50 FREE
Fifty must be Amy O'Brien's lucky number. The 5-foot-5-inch sophomore seems to win every 50 free competition she's in. This season alone, she won both the sectional (which she won in 2005 as well) and Division 1 state championships in the 50 free (24.30 seconds) and she was crowned the Middlesex League champion in the same competition. In only her second year at Lexington, she has set the school record for the 50 free and the 100 fly. She swims year-round for the North Shore Swim Club.
Katie O'Connell, Andover
 DIVING
As a freshman, O'Connell finished sixth in states and fourth in sectionals. She went to the East Nationals last summer, placing 35th. However, she broke out her sophomore year as she dominated the diving scene with first-place finishes in the Merrimack Valley Conference championships, North sectional championships, and Division 1 state championships. Her victory at states garnered her an entry to the AAU Nationals. She dives year-round with Charles River Diving. The honor roll student enjoys skiing in her spare time.
Rachael Peterson, Wellesley
 DIVING
Peterson's accomplishments this season are quite impressive, victories in both the sectionals and the Division 2 states as well as a second-place finish at the Bay State Conference championships. But would one have guessed that this was the 5-foot-6-inch junior's first year in diving competition? It makes her season all the more remarkable, especially because she lost only two meets this season. A gymnast as well, she participates in USAG gymnastics and Boston Area Diving and hopes to compete in gymnastics or diving in college.
Emma Santoro, Durfee
 100 FREE
This 5-foot-6-inch honor roll student has quickly etched her name into Durfee's recordbooks in only her second year. She holds school records for the 100 free, 50 free, 100 breaststroke, 200 IM, and 200 free. She also holds sectional records in the 100 free and the 100 breaststroke, the two competitions in which she also won sectional championships this season. She was the Division 1 state champion in the 100 free and has been named a Big Three and South Conference All-Star in both 2005 and 2006. She is also a member of the track team.
Anna Senko, Winchester
 100 BUTTERFLY
The 5-foot-3-inch freshman might not look threatening, but it's a different story in the pool. In only her first year, she broke Winchester's school record for the 100 butterfly and was the Middlesex League champion in the 100 butterfly, 200 IM, and 200 free relay. She was named a Middlesex League All-Star. Senko was the Division 2 champion in the 100 butterfly, finished third in the 200 IM and second in both the 200 free relay and 400 free relay. She's an all-around athlete as she participates in track and field. team.
Suzi Stein, Winchester
 200 FREE
Winchester's co-MVP (Anna Senko is the other) made waves in only her first year on the team. Her Division 2 state championship in the 200 free, her Middlesex League championship in the 200 free, and her Middlesex League championship in the 200 free relay all warranted her selection to the Middlesex League All-Star team. She's a repeat Top 10 New England Swimmer in USA Swimming. She plays lacrosse and she participates in competitive skiing as a member of the Green Mountain Valley School.

The relays

Chelmsford
 200 free
In the sectionals, Chelmsford finished in 1:43.71, second to Acton-Boxboro's 1:42.70, but the team, composed of Kelsey Sheridan, Stephanie Emanouil, Kaila Umbarger, and Katelyn Martin, got its revenge at the Division 1 state championships, edging Acton-Boxboro 1:41.53 to 1:41.62. Emanouil will graduate this spring but Chelmsford holds on to team MVP and three-time All-Scholastic Katelyn Martin, who not only won the 500 free at states, but also set the state record in the event.
Notre Dame of Hingham
 200 medley
The combination of Katie Radin, Ellesse Lunde, Caroline Vogel, and Caitlin Cronin was just too much for Bishop Stang as the Notre Dame of Hingham relay team defeated Stang with a time of 1:51.30 at the Division 2 state championships. It was a much closer affair in the sectionals as Notre Dame finished only .09 seconds ahead of Bishop Stang in 1:53.25. Cronin is a freshman and the other three are sophomores, so the Cougars will pose a daunting threat to opponents next season.
Chelmsford
 400 free
It was no surprise that the 400 relay state championship came down to Chelmsford and conference rival Andover. Nor was it a surprise that Chelmsford defeated Andover by a slim margin. The talented veteran team of Katelyn Martin, Amanda Cecere, Lauren Mayo, and Kathrine Kinnett finished with a time of 3:39.57, 1:26 seconds ahead of Andover. Their results weren't as sweet in the sectionals as Andover (3:40.53) got by Chelmsford (3:40.99).
