Boys' track
Runner of the Year
Jed Carpenter, Newton North
![]() |
Carpenter has been the man behind the scenes in Newton Norths domination in the Massachusetts track world the past two years. Carpenter has been of utmost value to the Tigers because of his ability to score points in multiple events. This outdoor season, he had maybe the stretch of his career, winning the 400 meters (49.75), triple jump (47-feet 1-inch) and being part of the winning 4x400 relay team (3-minutes 27.33) at the Division 1 meet. At the All-State meet, he won the triple jump (48-6, breaking his own school record) and finished third in the 400. The honor roll student will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall.
Coach of the Year
Robert Dick, Greater Lowell
![]() |
What Dick has done in his 12 years at Greater Lowell has been nothing short of outstanding. He has compiled a 93-3 record while flying under the radar in the Commonwealth Athletic Conference. His peers have voted him as the league coach of the year two consecutive outdoor seasons. This spring, he led Greater Lowell to a sixth place finish at the Division 2 meet, the best finish ever for the school. Dick is a Dracut native and is a graduate of UMass-Lowell (77) and Fitchburg State (93). He enjoys running, biking and snowshoe racing.
The All-Scholastics
Archie Abrams, Lexington
![]() |
Abrams was the dominant miler in Massachusetts this spring, clocking in at 4:19.57 at the State Championships to take first place. The five-time Middlesex League all-star also won the 800 at the Coaches Invitational with a time of 1:57.72, and helped his Lexington 4xmile relay team set a state record. Abrams, a senior, served as the team captain for the cross-country and indoor track teams and held the same position on the outdoor team. Abrams lists politics among his interests, and plans to run at Bowdoin College next year.
Zack Asack, Xaverian
![]() |
Asack is no stranger to the podium. After sweeping titles in the 300 hurdles, long jump and 4x400 relay at the Catholic Conference championships, Asack went on to pick up runner-up finishes in the 300 hurdles at the Division 1 (39.41 seconds) and All-State (39.09) meets. During the spring season, he set six school records. During the indoor season, Asack ran on Xaverians 4x400 relay team that won the New England championship. Asack is also an accomplished football player, earning himself an All-Scholastic selection and a scholarship to play at Duke.
Chris Barnicle, Newton North
![]() |
Not only is Barnicle an elite 2-miler by Massachusetts standards, he has set the high water mark in the event for country, giving him a national profile. At the Arcadia Invitational in California, the senior ran 8-minutes 56.2-seconds, which is best time in the country thus far. His winning time of 9:10.64 at the All-State meet a race he won by more than 14 seconds is the 12th fastest. Barnicle also runs cross-country and was a driving force behind Newton Norths triple crown of championships in cross-country, indoor and outdoor track. Barnicle will run for Arkansas.
Pablo Bello, Waltham
![]() |
Bello had a curiously bad third-place performance at the Division 1 meet, but bounced back in a big way in the All-State meet where he won title with a throw of 176-4. Though his finish at the divisional meet was nearly 17 feet off his qualifying length, that performance was only a minor blemish in an otherwise sparkling season and career. Bello was a standout athlete in both basketball and football for Waltham, earning league all-star selections for football team MVP honors in basketball. Bello will play football for Bentley in the fall.
Thomas Claiborne, Wellesley
![]() |
Claiborne dominated in the Bay State league and stepped out to take on the big boys and took home third-place at the All-State meet, throwing 157-feet 2-inches which was the best finish by an EMass thrower. He was named a league all-star in shot put and the discus throw. Claiborne, who also competes in indoor track, is a Bay State All-Star in football and hopes to one day earn a full scholarship to play at Boston College. He recently was awarded the Metco Award for Academic Risk Taking. His hobbies include computers, electronics and sports.
Ronald Conway, Bishop Feehan
![]() |
Conway may be best known for his football exploits he was the Division 2A Globe Player of the Year but he was a sensation on the track in the spring, winning the 110 hurdles at both the Division 3 championship (14.81 seconds) and the All-State championship (14.59). During his four years, the senior has been a part of four Super Bowl victories and was integral in the Shamrocks Division 3 team outdoor track championship this spring. He enjoys fishing and will play football and run track for Northeastern.
Thomas Cushing, Hingham
![]() |
Cushing carried over his strong showing in the indoor season first in the Division 3 and fourth at the All-State into the outdoor season where he dominate in every competition. He went undefeated in the Patriot League and won the Division 3 and the All-State championships. Cushing also plays football for Hingham and was a league all-star and Shriners Game Participant. He is member of the Thespian Society and the Boys Scouts. Cushing will attend Manhattan College in the fall.
Brian Gagnon, Lowell
![]() |
After sweeping top honors in the 1,000 meters at all the major meets in the winter, there were big expectations in 800 meters for the Lowell senior. Gagnon delivered, taking the top spot in the 800 at both the Division 1 (1-minute 54.76-seconds) and the All-State meet (1:54.01), defending his titles along the way. Also a prolific cross-country runner, Gagnon has been selected as an All-Scholastic five times in his career. The five-foot nine-inch senior has also competed in the Bay State Games and will attend UConn in the fall.
Mat Gansenberg, Hamilton-Wenham
![]() |
After two years of lurking in contention near the top of the leaderboards, Gansenberg experienced a breakthrough in 2005. The senior won the Cape Ann League championship, the state Division 4 championship and finished in fourth place at All-States with a height of 12-feet 6-inches. The 5-9, 135-pounder had finished second in the Cape Ann League and third at the state Division 4 meet as a junior after placing sixth at the Division 4 meet his sophomore year. An avid musician, Gansenberg expects to attend UMass-Dartmouth.
Andrew Grange, Central Catholic
![]() |
Grange was in a class by himself this season in the 400. He swept through all the major events, winning the Division 2 (49.95 seconds) and the All-State (49.23) meets. Grange also put his 400-meter talents to use in Central Catholics Division 2 championship winning 4x400 relay team. Grange also runs indoor track and in his career has been selected to the Merrimack Valley All-Star team five times between the indoor and outdoor seasons. The senior is an honor roll student and will run for UMass-Lowell in the fall.
Matthew Leeds, Bellingham
![]() |
Leeds wrapped up his career as long jumper in the Tri-Valley League on a two-year undefeated run. He also had an unblemished league record in the triple jump this season. At the Division 4 state meet, he notched a third place finish in the long jump (21-feet 2-inches) and a fifth place finish in the triple jump. At the All-State meet, he again took third in the long jump with a best leap of 21-feet 10æ-inches. Leeds was also an all-league selection in football. He will continue both his track and football careers at Worcester State.
Johan Rafael, Lawrence
![]() |
Rafaels final season at Lawrence included a first place finish in the Division 1 finals and the State Finals in the 100-meter event. The senior was a two-time All-State champion and champion of the Merrimack Valley Conference. He set school records for the 50-meter dash (5.4), the 55-meter dash (6.47), the 60-meter dash (7.01); the 100-meter dash (10.5), the 4x100 Relay (42.8), and the 4x200 relay (1:31.31). Although uncertain of his college plans Rafael hopes to continue running next season.
Marquis Thomas, Snowden
![]() |
Thomas was one of three chosen in the high jump for our indoor All-Scholastic section in the winter. But in the spring, he separated himself from the crowd in EMass with a runner-up finish at the All-State meet, jumping 6-feet 6-inches, two inches off his personal best. Thomas was also the Boston City League champion for the second consecutive season. Thomas served as his class president at Snowden and will attend UConn next year and compete in track and field for the Huskies.
Eric Wornum, Milton
![]() |
As a sophomore, Wornum burst onto the scene and was the best 200-meter runner in the tough Bay State League, Division 3 and All-State competitions. Though Wornum dipped slightly in his performance from his time in the Division 3 meet (22.17 seconds) to his All-State time (22.31) he was still just as successful. In the indoor season, Wornum finished sixth in the 300 meters at the Division 4 meet. The 5-foot 8-inch Wornum also plays football and counts it as one his favorite hobbies along with video games and reading.
Relay teams
Newton North

![]() |
| Though its never really smart to discount a Newton North relay team, the quartet of Chris Kneisel, Kyle Greenidge, Cailean Robinson, and Russell Pitts were sprinkled with pixie dust and clearly the surprise of the All-State meet, winning with a time of 43.32 seconds. Greenidge and Kniesel ran with the more established and experienced 4x400 team (take a peek to the left), but the emotive Pitts and Robinson ran the final two legs of the magical race in a blaze at Worcester State to push the unlikely winners onto the top spot of the podium. |

| Good relay teams have been the Tigers calling card in winning back to back outdoor championships. Coach Jim Blackburn has had the luxury of mixing Mr. Everything Jed Carpenter with the usual array of seasoned distance runners (David Silfer) and eager newcomers (Chris Kneisel and Kyle Greenidge) who have been waiting in the wings. Carpenter and Silfer were part of the 4x400 Newton North squad who filled this very space last year. This years team, like the one in 2004, won both the Division 1 championship (3-minutes 27.33 seconds) and the All-State meet (3:23.38). |
Xaverian

![]() |
| This team was able to win despite their varied ages and experience. Their results were hard to argue with, they won the Division 1 championship with a time of 7-minutes 55.57-seconds and the All-State championship, running 7:56.97. Ryan Keough, the Division 1 runner-up in the 400, was the only senior. Alec Bleday was the other upperclassman and Mark Amirault and Dan Higgins were both sophomore. Bleday and Amirault also run cross-country. Their hobbies are as varied as their ages: Bleday (movies), Amirault (fishing), Keough (aviation) and Higgins (ping pong). Keough will attend Daniel Webster in the fall. |
