Girls' tennis

Singles

Susan Bitetti, Norwell
 SOPHOMORE
In retrospect, our ‘‘bold’’ prediction that Bitetti would see her face on these pages wasn’t so bold after all. Only a sophomore, her second season of varsity tennis was perfect. She completed an undefeated 21-0 singles season and won the South sectional. Her career record stands at 47-2. She also has garnered numerous academic honors, including a gold medal on the National Latin Exam and membership in the National, Latin, and Spanish Honor Societies and she is on Norwell’s High Honor Roll. Bitetti also plays indoor and travel soccer and enjoys skiing, skimboarding, and drawing. In the summer, she will compete in USTA tournaments. She hopes to play tennis in college.
Darcy Demers, Bishop Feehan
 JUNIOR
With just one regular-season blemish in 58 high school matches, Demers has solidified her standing as one of the best in the state. Her consecutive All-Scholastic selections and three straight Eastern Athletic Conference nods add to her growing resume. This season Demers went 17-1 during the regular season and made it to the South sectional finals of the individual tournament, where she lost to Norwell’s Susan Bitetti, 6-4, 7-5. In the summer, Demers will be playing USA team tennis and competing in USTA tournaments.
Chealsey Giatrelis, Barnstable
 FRESHMAN
On a team packed with good players, Giatrelis, who is only a freshman, is perhaps the best. The 5-foot-1-inch dynamo helped Barnstable to an 18-0 record, the Old Colony League title, and an appearance in the Division 1 South sectional team finals, where they lost, 3-2, to Needham. In the individual tournament, Giatrelis advanced all the way to the South sectional semifinals, where she was eventually upended by Darcy Demers, 6-2, 6-2. For her efforts this season, she was named an Old Colony League All-Star. Giatrelis hopes to play tennis in college once she finishes high school. In the meantime, she will be playing in USTA tournaments during the summer.
Lauren Hollender, Newton South
 FRESHMAN
If we tell you that a freshman is on the All-Scholastic team, you’re likely to say ‘‘No way.’’ But to borrow from Hollender’s favorite movie, Wayne’s World, we say ‘‘Way!’’ Hollender led her team from her third singles slot and finished the season undefeated, won the North sectional championship and a team Dual County League championship. The honor roll student plays in USTA tournaments and for the Newton South soccer squad. In her free time, the 5-foot-3-inch Hollender enjoys reading, snowboarding, being with family, and, yes, watching Wayne’s World.
Caroline Koch, Andover
 JUNIOR
Though Koch was the first Golden Warrior ever to make it to the North sectional final, the junior is no stranger to success. In 2004 she paired with Lauren Wilmarth to win the New England doubles title. This season, she went 11-1 and she has been ranked No. 13 in the USTA’s New England rankings. When she’s not on the court, Koch is out on the links playing golf for fun. The 5-foot-5-inch Koch counts making scrapbooks and hanging out with friends as her hobbies. After completion of her senior season next year, Koch hopes to play tennis and major in interior design in college.
Kaitlyn Pritchard, Scituate
 SOPHOMORE
Another of our super sophomores, Prichard may be the best of the crop. She was a semifinalist in the South sectional singles tournament and had a 15-0 record in team play for Scituate in the second singles position. She played from the third slot as a freshman and compiled a 16-1 record. The 5-foot-8-inch Pritchard takes all honors and AP classes. Her hobbies include coastal research and the Environmental Club. In the summer, she will compete in USTA tournaments in New England.
Tasha Stone, Concord-Carlisle
 JUNIOR
Three years of varsity tennis and three selections to the All-Scholastic team: quite a nice career for Stone. After winning the state doubles title last season, Stone made the switch to singles play and barely missed a beat for Concord-Carlisle, advancing to the semifinals of the North sectional in the individual tournament. The 5-foot-5-inch Stone plays tennis year-round and will compete in USTA events and get even more practice at tennis camp this summer. In her free time, Stone enjoys running, hanging out with friends, and traveling.
Katie Young, Newton South
 JUNIOR
For three seasons, Young has anchored a consistently tough Newton South program. In those three seasons, she has only dropped four matches. She was on her game this spring, leading Newton South to an undefeated Dual County League campaign and an appearance in the Division 1 North sectional team finals, where the Lions lost to Westford Academy, 3-2. In the individual tournament, Young made a run to the semifinals, where she fell to Lauren Hollender after retiring in the second set. The high honors student enjoys basketball, running, and hanging out with friends.

Doubles

Rachel Bergeron, Needham
 SOPHOMORE
Bergeron’s youth mixed perfectly with doubles partner Jessye Moss’s experience this season. The duo helped Needham finish off an undefeated 16-0 season and claim a Bay State League title. They capped their own season with an appearance in the South sectional final. The 5-foot-5-inch sophomore was also a sectional finalist last season. She is an honor roll student and plays junior varsity volleyball for Needham. Though she’s a member of the class of 2008, she has already pinpointed Villanova, Holy Cross, and Wellesley as potential college destinations.
Kristina Black, Andover
 JUNIOR
If they can continue to pool their talent for Andover, Black and her teammate Rikki Sartor, both juniors, should be a force again next season. As one half of the undefeated tandem, Black was a Merrimack Valley Conference champion and helped win the North sectional in the individual state tournament. But an undefeated record is nothing new for Black; she hasn’t lost in regular season play. The honors student enjoys traveling, following the local professional sports teams, and spending time with family and friends. Once she graduates, Black hopes to play tennis at a four-year university and then further her education in graduate school.
Lauren Donnelly, Barnstable
 SENIOR
For the second consecutive season, Donnelly has graced these pages for her doubles success. Donnelly paired with sophomore Kortney Kelley to go 24-0 this season, notching South sectional and Old Colony League titles en route. The senior captain has posted a 51-0 record during the past two seasons and was twice named an Old Colony League All-Star. She was a recipient of the Barnstable Academic Award and was a member of the honor roll. During the offseason, Donnelly honed her skills at the Bay State Games and picked up silver medals there in both singles and doubles competition. She will major in history and play tennis at Emmanuel next season.
Sari Fromson, Newton South
 SENIOR
Under Fromson’s captaincy, Newton South had an historic season. Partnered with Elana Polivy at first doubles, Fromson led Newton South to a Dual County League title and an undefeated season. Fromson and Polivy also advanced to the North sectional in the individual tournament. She was a two-year varsity tennis player and a member of the honor roll at school. Off the court, Fromson is an accomplished dancer, having been involved with dance for 13 years. She will be attending Trinity College in the fall.
Kortney Kelley, Barnstable
 SOPHOMORE
Kelley proved herself a more than capable replacement for Heather Lacey as doubles partner for Lauren Donnelly. With Donnelly, she completed a 24-0 season and picked up a South sectional title as well as an Old Colony All-Star nod, her second consecutive selection. Kelley keeps the same offseason training regimen as Donnelly: competing in both singles and doubles matches in the Bay State Games. With Donnelly graduating this year, Kelley will have to play the role of mentor next season. The sophomore also plays volleyball for Barnstable and is on the honor roll. She hopes to play tennis in college.
Jessye Moss, Needham
 SENIOR
Moss capped off her four-year varsity career with a trip to the South sectional finals with doubles teammate Rachel Bergeron, though they lost that matchup to Lauren Donnelly and Kortney Kelley, 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. As a cocaptain, she helped Needham go undefeated during the regular season from her first doubles slot. The undefeated streak stretched on to the postseason, as Needham dropped Barnstable, 3-2, in the Division 1 South sectional team final. The 5-foot-2-inch senior is an honors student. She enjoys drawing and volunteering at hospitals. She will attend Brandeis in the fall.
Elana Polivy, Newton South
 JUNIOR
It will be tough for Polivy to top her junior season. Paired with senior captain Sari Fromson, the duo helped Newton South finish the season undefeated in team matches. They capped that by winning a Dual County League title and a trip to the North sectional finals in the state individual tournament. The 5-foot-7-inch Polivy has played on the varsity team for two seasons and is on Newton South’s honor roll. She enjoys playing tennis, following the Red Sox, and spending time outdoors. In 2004, she competed in the Maccabi Games.
Rikki Sartor, Andover
 JUNIOR
Sartor is another in a long line of Andover players who have led the team to 16 years of dominance. The Warriors have won 263 consecutive Merrimack Valley Conference matches, including 337 of their last 338. This season was another excellent one for Andover. With Sartor playing first doubles with partner Kristina Black, Andover went 18-1 in the regular season and made it to the Division 1 North sectional semifinals. Sartor and Black rolled to the North sectional doubles championship. Sartor also plays soccer for her high school and the club team Aztecs.

Coaches of the year

Bob Jampol, Newton South
 Coach of the Year
This is Jampol’s second All-Scholastic Coach of the Year honor, the first coming in 1997. His team was flawless this season, taking all 18 of their league matches and finishing 21-1 after their run in the state tournament. In his 16 years as Newton South coach, he has compiled a 209-52 record, which equates to a phenomenal .801 winning percentage. Jampol has produced four All-Scholastics this season. He is a 1967 graduate of Jamaica High School in Queens, N.Y., and he graduated from Yale, where he played club tennis, in 1971. A Civil War buff, Jampol enjoys playing tennis, road running, and reading.
Jean Plotka, Marblehead
 Coach of the Year
It’s hard to argue with these numbers: 215 wins in 224 league matches (.960 winning percentage), 10 Northeast Conference titles (including the last five) in 13 years, and a 13-0 record for this season. In her 13 seasons at the helm of Marblehead, Plotka has collected two Northeastern Conference Coach of the Year awards. She is a 1963 graduate of Portsmouth (N.H.) High and a 1967 graduate of Tufts’ Bouve College, where, she said, as a physical education major, she played everything. ‘‘This team was very talented,’’ Plotka said. ‘‘But even more, they were a wonderful, cohesive group. They work well together, leadership qualities abound.’’
