Boys' track

Runner of the year

Darius Walker, Lexington
 100/Long jump, Sr.
After torching the competition this winter, Walker kept his momentum going from indoors to outdoors. The sprinter captured two MIAA titles with victories in the Division 1 state finals (10.70) and the All-State championships (10.79).

Coaches of the year

Kevin Kelly & Kate Waller, Lexington
 DIVISION 1
A pole vaulter in high school, Kelly has become a master of all things track. He joined with co-coach Kate Waller to lead the Minutemen to the school’s first outdoor state title since 1994. Kelly has served as Lexington’s hurdler and jump coach... Waller is homegrown. She graduated from Lexington High in 1998, and ran track and cross-country for the Minutemen. After graduating from Bowdoin, she began her coaching career as a volunteer. Waller is a competitive road racer.
Kristyn Hughes, Charlestown
 DIVISION 2
Hughes’s Townies, who bused to other tracks for practice while their track was being renovated, ended O’Bryant’s four-year reign as city champ. Said Hughes of her diverse group: ‘‘We all mesh so well together and really form a family on the track.’’
Bob Powers, Stoneham
 DIVISION 3
Powers’s Spartans won the Division 3 state title and the Division 3 relay crown (their third in four years). For the 21-year coaching veteran, it was a second chance after his Stoneham squad lost the 2005 Division 4 title by two-hundredths of a second.
Steve Sawyer, Hamilton-Wenham
 DIVISION 4
Sawyer, who coaches the indoor, outdoor, and cross-country squads, led the Generals to a second-place showing in the Division 4 State Relays, then followed that up by edging Watertown and Dedham to win the Division 4 state championship.

The All-Scholastics

Eric Wornum, Milton
 200, Sr.
This year’s Division 3 (22.58) and All-State champ (21.87) finished off a fine high school career with a fourthplace finish at the New England championships. The two-time All- State titlist and three-time Division 3 champ will attend UMass-Lowell.
Meikle Paschal, Lexington
 400, Sr.
Another member of the Lexington sprinter corps, Paschal earned a trio of titles in the 400 — at the State Coaches’ meet (48.80), the Division 1 state finals (48.77), and the All-State championships (48.29). He will attend the University of Virginia.
Bryan Longo, Lexington
 800, Sr.
A state champion (1:53.52) and a New England champion (1:54.57) in the 800, Longo leaves with three Middlesex League All-Star seasons. He’ll hang up the track spikes now as he plans to play soccer at Seton Hall University.
Mark Amirault, Xaverian
 Mile
A pair of championships highlighted this senior’s outdoor season. Amirault ran a 4:17.57 to win the Division 1 mile title. At the All-State meet, he ran to victory while beating his Division 1 meet time by more than four seconds (4:13.10).
Ryan Collins, Mansfield
 2-mile, Sr.
Collins continued his mastery of the two-mile in the spring with a Division 2 state championship (9:23.32) and then a first-place performance at the All-State meet (9:24.21). Collins helped the Hornets lock up the Division 2 team crown.
Sheldon Allen, Charlestown
 110 hurdles, Jr.
It took the top talent in all of New England to finally stop this threetime city champion in the hurdles. But before Allen’s third-place finish at the N.E. championships, he earned wins in the event at the State Coaches’, Division 2, and All-State meets.
Jonathan Keyes, Waltham
 300 hurdles, Sr.
This Salem State-bound runner locked up victories in the State Coaches’ meet (39.61) and the Division 1 meet (40.01). Keyes was also strong as a relay runner, helping Waltham win the Greater Boston League crown in the 4 x 400.
Andrew Maryott, Dennis-Yarmouth
 Discus, Sr.
Boasting a personal best of 165-9, Maryott won the Division 2 and All-State crowns in the discus. He was also undefeated in the event in the Atlantic Coast League for two years. He plans to attend Rhodes College in Memphis.
Shawn Fahey, Wilmington
 Javelin, Sr.
Two runner-up finishes in the Division 3 (170-4) and All-State (173-7) meets, as well as a fourth at the New England championships (174-4), highlighted Fahey’s senior season. He plans to keep his career going at UMass-Lowell.
Jordan Maddocks, Framingham
 High jump, Sr.
Maddocks’s 6-8 leap in the Division 1 championship was enough to earn him the title. At the All-State meet, he pulled out a victory with a jump of 6-7. With that, he headed to the New England championships, where his jump of 6-4 grabbed him third place.
Paul Bunyan, Tewksbury
 Pole vault, Jr.
Bunyan locked up top honors at the Division 2 state finals (14 feet), placed second at All-States (14 feet, 6 inches), then tied for fourth at the New England Championships (14 feet). He also broke the school record in this event.
David Smith, Newton North
 Shot put
In addition to his Division 1 title in the shot put, Smith was a runner-up at the All-State meet and pushed to a fourth-place effort at the New England championships (54-7). The owner of a 30 dual-meet winning streak will attend Yale University.
Kevon Mason, Xaverian
 Triple jump, Sr.
Mason won his second straight Division 1 title (43 feet, 9OE inches) and was third at this year’s All-State meet with a leap of 45-10. He also defended his Catholic Conference title. Mason, a 2006 CC titlist in the 300- meter hurdles, will attend UNH.

The relays

Newton North
 4X100

Independently, the Tigers’ 4 x 100 team was strong. Cailean Robinson had runner-up finishes in the 100-meter dash at the Division 1 and All-State meets. Avery Mitchell was second at the All-States in the 400. And Hymlaire Lamisere and Gordon Forbes were Bay State League All-Star performers. But when together, they were one of the fastest teams, with 4 x 100 wins at the Division 1 and All-State events, plus a fourth-place effort at the New England meet.
Woburn
 4X400

Every time Ryad Bencheikh, Brett Sullivan, Brody Griffiths, and Michael McDonough teamed up for the Tanners this season, something big was set to happen. And sure enough, the foursome made big things happen with victories in the State Coaches’ (3:28.17), Division 2 (3:26.95), and All-State (3:22.33) meets. They added their biggest crown at the New England championships, outlasting Naugatuck, Conn. by three-tenths of a second to claim first place.
Brockton
 4X800

Robert Morales, Kevin Gill, Carlos Montrond, and Michael Gomes kept getting faster and faster. After winning the Division 1 title in 8:03.46, the foursome shaved more than five seconds off that time at the All- States (7:58.32). And in their second-place performance at the New England championships, they finished nearly a whopping 14 seconds faster, in 7:44.54. It was a fine end to a season that also included a win at the New England indoor meet.
