Girls' track

Runner of the year

Lauren Barber, New Bedford
 Triple jump/100 hurdles, Sr.
A state champion in both events, and New England champion in the triple jump, the senior accomplished about as much as an athlete could in her four-year career. What's the next challenge for Barber? Princeton.

Coaches of the year

Mel Gonsalves, Lincoln-Sudbury
 DIVISION 1
No stranger to this list, Gonsalves saw his team capture the D1 state championship after an 8-0 regular season. Gonsalves offers thanks this season to Wayland and Weston, who allowed L-S to train at their tracks while L-S's was being renovated.
John Byrnes, Tewksbury
 DIVISION 2
Taking over after two years as an assistant, Byrnes captured a Division 2 state championship in his first year. The Holy Cross grad saw 12 of his athletes place in the top five in the D2 meet, edging MVC rival Central Catholic by a point for the title.
Stephen Schlicting, Hingham
 DIVISION 3
Schlicting admits this year's team exceeded his expectations, going 8-0 and capturing the Patriot League title, brining his record in the last three years at Hingham to 41-1. The BC grad hails his coaching staff as the best he's ever worked with.
Sotirios Pintzopoulos, North Reading
 DIVISION 4
The 2001 North Reading alum saw his team rebound from a 5-5 regular season to capture the D4 state championship, as the Hornets grabbed first-place finishes in five events. The Cape Ann coach of the year, he enjoys traveling, reading, and hiking.

The All-Scholastics

Candace Bailey, Newton South
 100, Jr.
The D1 state champ in the 55 meters for the winter season, Bailey returned in the spring in the 100 meters. The junior's time of 12.56 earned her a second-place finish in the state and N.E. championships.
Sarah Trotman, Cambridge
 200, Jr.
A member of last year's state and New England record-setting 4 x 200 relay team, the junior was this year's state champion in the 200, winning with a time of 25.48. The honors student was also a GBL champion and team MVP.
Dana Jamieson, Lincoln-Sudbury
 400, Jr.
A constant presence on the Warriors' vaunted relay teams, Jamieson makes an individual appearance after winning the 400 meters at the All-State meet in 55.8. The junior also posted a second-place finish in the long jump as L-S captured the state title.
Molly Binder, Lincoln-Sudbury
 800, Jr.
Binder did her part in retaining the Warriors’ championship form, winning the 800 meters with a time of 2:11.88. The junior also won the 1,000 meters at states in the winter, and is an integral piece of L-S’s championship relay teams.
Bridget Dahlberg, Newton South
 Mile, Soph.
Dahlberg warmed up for the state meet with a Division 1 winning time of 5:07.55. At states, she recorded a 4:58.77 to take top honors. The sophomore anchored Newton South's mile relay team to a fourth-place finish at Nationals in North Carolina.
Jenna Davidner, Oliver Ames
 2-mile, Fr.
The freshman makes her second All-Scholastic appearance, following her fine cross-country season. Davidner finished third in the 2-mile at this year's state meet. The Hockomock League champ is a National Junior Honor Society member.
Stephanie Reusch, Old Rochester
 300 hurdles, Sr.
Finishing first is something of a habit for this URI-bound senior. A of 43.7 at the SCC Championship's was a school and a meet record. A first place finish at the state championships was followed by a 43.65 time to capture New England's.
Kayla Littig, Carver
 Discus, Jr.
The junior placed second in the state and eighth in New England, and had a school record throw of 120-10. She also had a throw of 34-9 in the shot put. A league all-star in field hockey, the honors student hopes to play both sports in college.
Mary Silvia, Reading
 Javelin, Sr.
She set a school record with a throw of 130-0. Silvia finished second at the state championships and fifth at the New England meet, and was a league all-star in basketball and track in her final two years. She'll play basketball at Hartford.
Arantxa King, Medford
 Long jump, Sr.
An obvious choice as the state's Gatorade track and field athlete of the year, King won the state championship with a record 20-31/2 jump, going along with her state and New England record in the triple jump. The Bermuda native will attend Stanford on a track scholarship.
Jermai Harrison, Brockton
 Shot put, Sr.
Harrison's throw of 37-6 1/2 was good for second in New England this year. The high honors student was also a member of the volleyball team, and enjoys singing in her church's choir with her mother. She will study psychology at UMass-Dartmouth.
Olga Ponomarenko, Concord-Carlisle
 High jump, Sr.
The 5-foot-8-inch senior was the state champion after taking second place last year. She posted a season-high jump of 5-8, and was the New England champ in the long jump last year. She also skis and will attend UConn.

The relays

Andover
 4X100

All Elizabeth DiTroia, Melissa Knapp, Christina Muccio, and Vanessa Singleton did was set a school and state record in the 4x100 relay, capturing the state and New England championship along the way. And with no seniors among them, they will be looking to improve upon this year's success.
Lincoln-Sudbury
 4X400

It almost seems unfair the collection of talent at the Warriors disposal. It's the same quartet that captured the state title in 2006, and the competition cannot be pleased by the fact that they are all still juniors, and will be adding to L-S's extensive trophy cabinet next year as well. The group ensured the Warriors' repeat in the state championship, beating last year's winning time by more than three seconds, posting a 3:57.01.
Newton North
 4X800

Jess Barton, Kat Chiong, Emma Kornetsky, and Carolyn Ranti combined to set a meet record in the D1 state championships, and won the New England meet by better than 27 seconds, with a time of 9:15.13. Seniors Barton and Chiong will attend Wake Forest and Holy Cross, respectively.
