Athletes of the Year

Mile, Jr.
Omar Aden, Charlestown
Aden added more accolades to his
already impressive résumé. He won
the Division 2 championship in the
mile with a time of 4:16.72, then won
the All-State title in 4:13.83. Aden is
also an all-star in soccer and a member
of the National Honor Society.

200, Soph.
Kamal Riley, Charlestown
A member of Charlestowns undefeated
Boston City championship
squad, Riley won the leagues 200-
meter competition and brought
home the All-State title with a time of
22.19. The sophomore also had the
best 200 in the state, 21.93.
Coaches of the Year

Division 1
Jim Blackburn, Newton North
The three-time Globe Coach of the
Year had one of his finest seasons in
his 48th year as the Tigers went 7-0
and captured the Bay State Conference
title. Newton North finished
third in the state relays and second at
the Division 1 and All-State meets.

Division 2
Hal Croft, Reading
Crofts team went 9-0 this season,
winning the Division 2 state title.
Croft, a track coach for 38 years, has
amassed 313 wins at Reading and
was named the 1996 National Coach
of the Year by the National Teachers
Federation.

Division 3
Bob Cripps, Wilmington
Wilmington went 9-1 and captured
the Division 3 state championship. A
track coach for 35 years, Cripps was
Coach of the Year in the Cape Ann
League in both 2004 and 2007. He
credited his teams solid all-around
performance for its success.

Division 4
Steve Sawyer, Hamilton-Wenham
Sawyers squad went 10-0 and won
four titles Cape Ann Dual Meet,
Cape Ann Open Meet, Division 4
state relays, and Division 4 state
championship. Sawyer was inducted
into the Massachusetts Track Coaches
Hall of Fame in 2005.
All-Scholastics

Triple jump, Sr.
Adam Bao, Newton North
Bao went undefeated in the Bay State
Conference in the triple jump, won
the State Coaches Invitational at
43-5Æ, and took second at the All-
State meet in 44-6. At the Bay State
meet, the Yale-bound senior was part
of three first-place finishes.

110 hurdles, Sr.
Matt Callanan, Mansfield
Callanan ended his senior season in
style, capturing the New England
title in the 110 hurdles. He also won
the event at the Division 2 championships
and the All-State meet. The
Hockomock League MVP will attend
Syracuse University.

400, Jr.
Paul Connor, Milton
Connor followed up a dominant
indoor track season with an equally
impressive outdoor campaign. He
won the 400 at the Division 3 and
All-State meets, and helped Miltons
4 x 400 team win the Division 3 title
as well.

Long jump, Sr.
Greg Dean, Brockton
Dean is no stranger to dominating
the long jump competition. He won
the indoor Division 1 championship
during the winter, then went on to
win the All-State outdoor title with a
leap of 22-6. A high honor roll student,
he will attend URI.

Javelin, Sr.
Nick Farnsworth, Wilmington
Farnsworth took home the Cape Ann
League javelin title and won league
MVP. Then he won the All-State meet
with a throw of 192-4. The Harvardbound
senior and National Honor
Society member also holds the state
record in the event.

100, Soph.
Chris McConnell, Andover
Building on his indoor season, when
he went undefeated in the 55-meter
dash, McConnell continued to dominate.
He wound up with the best
EMass finish in the 100-meter dash
at the All-State meet with a time of
10.98.

Pole vault, Soph.
Ross McDonald, Newton South
McDonald dominated the pole vault
competition in only his second year.
McDonald won both the Division 1
and All-State meets by clearing 14
feet. The honor roll student also won
the Dual County League championship.

Shot put, Sr.
Mike McPherson, Mansfield
McPherson took home the Division 2
title in the shot put with a heave of 55
feet, then finished his season by
winning the All-State meet with a
toss of 55-10æ. The senior also holds
the school record at 56-9. He will
attend Gardner-Webb.

Discus, Soph.
Andrew Tallman, BC High
Tallman couldnt get much better in
his sophomore campaign. He finished
first in the discus at the Coaches
Invitational and the Division 1
meet. He also had the best distance
by an EMass athlete at the New England
meet and was fourth at states.

300 hurdles, Jr.
Davis VanOpdorp, Winchester
VanOpdorp put together an impressive
season in the 300 hurdles, as he
went undefeated in the Middlesex
League and took home the Division 3
title with a time of 38.96. He went on
to capture the All-State championship
in the event.

High jump, Jr.
Corey Thomas, BC High
A winter All-Scholastic in the 55
hurdles, Thomas continued to show
why hes one of the better all-around
track athletes in the state. This time
the junior made his mark in the high
jump, finishing first at the All-State
meet with a jump of 6 feet 8 inches.

800, Jr.
Nick Wade, North Attleboro
A captain for three seasons, Wade
showed this year the talent that
helped him set a school record in the
800 meters. He finished as the Hockomock
League champion, then went
on to win the All-State championship
with a time of 1:55.03.

2 mile, Jr.
David Wilson, Brookline
Wilson put together an impressive
season in the 2-mile competition. He
captured the Division 1 state crown
with a finish of 9:27.27, then improved
on that at the All-State meet,
winning in 9:22.42. He was also a
cross-country All-Scholastic.
Relays
4x100 meters

Charlestown
The relay team was a force in 2008. From left, Sheldon
Allen, Yaovi Jondoh, Kareem Cutler, and Kamal
Riley went 8-0 to complete an undefeated season,
winning the city championship and the All-State title,
as well as the Hartford Invitational. At the New Englands,
the group took second place. Led by the relay
team, Charlestown won the All-State championship.
4x400 meters

Woburn
From left, Brian Smith, Matt Pereira, Mike McDonough,
and Ryad Bencheikh put it all together this
season. They won the Division 2 title (3:24.25), then
completed their outdoor season by winning the All-
State title by less than a second, in 3:24.05. Bencheikh
and McDonough were also on the Woburn
indoor 4 x 400 team that won a national title last
winter.
4x800 meters

Whitman-Hanson
From left, Peter Gilmore, Patrick Egan, Kevin Gilmore
and Patrick Taft made the Panthers 4 x 800
team the best in the state. The foursome won the
Division 2 title with a time of 8:08.79, then took the
All-State title in 8:03.89. Egan and Taft are juniors
and will carry the team again next season. Peter
Gilmore was also a cross-country All-Scholastic.
