Girls' hockey

The Super team

Christina Sweeney, Dedham
GOALIE
Sweeney, who has dominated in net for three years with Dedham, came one win away from a second state championship for the Marauders. After winning the Division 2 title two seasons ago, Dedham made it to the Division 1 state final last winter before losing to Bay State Conference rival Needham. This year, Sweeney carried the team to a 19-2-1 record and recorded 10 shutouts. Once again she backstopped the team to the Division 1 final before her team came up short against Woburn. With that, the star goaltender now has 38 shutouts in her three seasons - a number that would scare any offense in the Bay State Conference. A two-time member of the Globe Super Team, Sweeney is also an honor roll student and serves as class secretary.
Rachel Wilkes, Dedham
CENTER
Wilkes will graduate with an astounding resume. Dedham won the Division 2 state championship as a sophomore, appeared in Division 1 final as a junior, and then once again made it to the state final as a senior while along the way breaking Dedham's all-time scoring record with 153 points. And hockey isn't even her best sport. A three-time Globe Super Team member, four-time Bay State Conference All-Star and the cocaptain of the hockey team since her sophomore year, Wilkes will attend Northeastern University next year to play field hockey. Whether on a field or on the ice, Wilkes excels. She is also equally accomplished in the classroom, as class president and recipient of the Who's Who in American Students Award in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
Deborah Spillane, Franklin
CENTER
A girl on the boys' hockey team, Spillane has proven she belongs. In the last two seasons, she has been named an All-Scholastic and has helped Franklin capture back-to-back Hockomock League championships. This season, she registered 11 goals and 13 assists and took the Panthers to the Division 2 South final. During the off-season, Spillane has played in the Bay State games and has won four national titles with the Assabet Valley club team. As the second-seeded team in the Division 2 South, Franklin entered the tournament 16-4 with Spillane as a major contributor on offense. Next year, she will play hockey at Boston College.
Jessica Buttaro, Woburn
CENTER
Last year, Buttaro was a key element in leading Woburn to a 20-1-1 record and a Division 2 state championship. Just like her coach, Buttaro realized there was still room for improvement, leading the Tanners to a 22-0-1 record and another championship, this time in Division 1. The dynamic forward has compiled 113 goals and 83 assists over her career, is a three-time All-Scholastic. Improving each season, Buttaro has been named to the Middlesex League All-Star team all four years with Woburn and is a two-time all-league team member. Even in her sophomore year, Buttaro was lighting the lamp regularly as the state's leading scorer. Next year she hopes to attend Quinnipiac, Maine, Providence, or Boston College. She is also a member of the soccer team.
Colleen Martin, Woburn
DEFENSE
Just a sophomore, Martin is making her second appearance as a All-Scholastic. With a remarkable combined plus/minus in her freshman and sophomore years of 134, it's no wonder Woburn has lost just one game in two years. As if her defensive role was not enough, Martin gets involved offensively, picking up 11 goals and 20 assists this season. Martin's defense, combined with the offense of Buttaro and Colleen Sanborn, helped Woburn capture the Middlesex League and Division 1 state titles. While she is just a sophomore, Martin already has Division 1 college hopes. Also a soccer and softball star, Martin just has to decide which sport she wants to play at a Division 1 college.
Ashley Milley, Lincoln-Sudbury
CENTER
It is one thing to play a varsity sport for four straight years; it's another to lead that team in scoring all four seasons. Milley has carried the Lincoln-Sudbury hockey team since the first time she set foot on the ice, netting 50 points as a freshman, 49 as a sophomore, 54 as a junior and 41 as a senior. All four years, Milley has been named to the Dual County All-Star team and has twice been named to the all-conference team. Milley also has won two national titles with the Assabet Valley hockey program and is headed to the national championships with the under-19 Midget hockey team. A goalie for the L-S lacrosse team, Milley has excelled. As the starting goaltender since her freshman year, she lookes forward to another season this spring.

Coaches of the Year

Robert MacCurtain, Woburn
DIVISION 1
MacCurtain said that one of his goals for the season was to improve daily. It's hard to improve on perfection. The Tanners were undefeated, finishing with a 22-0-1 record and the Division 1 state title. That is an improvement from the near-perfect squad from last year, which finished 20-1-1 and won the Division 2 state championship. ``Each player is better today due to their hard work and commitment,'' said MacCurtain. In four years of coaching at Woburn, MacCurtain has compiled a 63-15-5 record and has twice been named the Globe's Coach of the Year, last year in Division. As a Division 2 team last year, Woburn moved comfortably up to Division 1 this season, defeating Austin Prep, Wakefield, and second-seeded Dedham in the tournament.
Craig Doolittle, Westford
DIVISION 2
Doolittle attended high school in Ridgewood, N.J., but in two years as the coach of Westford Academy, he has already made his mark in Massachusetts. In Westford's second season as a varsity program, Doolittle carried the Grey Ghosts to a Division 2 state championship. ``I am incredibly proud of this team and feel privileged to be able to coach them,'' said Doolittle. A graduate of Clarkson University, Doolittle has been a successful hockey coach all over the country, coaching youth hockey from mites to bantams in Ohio, Michigan, and in Westford since 1980. In two years, Doolittle has brought Westford from a non-entity to one of the premiere programs in Division 2. Westford Academy boasts an impressive 27-11-3 record in its two seasons as a varsity program.

The All-Scholastics

Jaime Bernardi, Fontbonne
RIGHT WING
When Bernardi was just a freshman, she helped Fontbonne to a Division 1 state title. Last year, as a junior, she posted 25 goals and 14 assists and carried the Ducks to a Catholic Central League title. She capped off her brilliant high school career this season, netting 20 goals while adding 7 assists. Named the Catholic Central League's MVP, Bernardi brought Fontbonne to the Division 1 tournament. While the Ducks only won one game in the tournament, Bernardi's scoring ability led them to a 15-5-0 record for the season. The leading scorer among a team of talented players, she has yet to decide on a college for next year.
Erica Christensen, Acton-Boxboro
CENTER
This winter Christensen accomplished what few in the NHL can accomplish anymore - a 50-goal season. The senior sniper potted 50 goals and added 28 assists this year and was named to the Dual County All-Star and all-conference teams. In her career, Christensen has scored 106 goals and has 196 points. Named the Lowell-area Player of the Year in 2003 and a three-time Dual County League All-Star, Christensen will attend Phillips Academy in Andover in the fall. She also plays with the North Shore Vipers and in the Bay State Games and in her free time volunteers at Emerson Hospital.
Broghan Cully, Duxbury
CENTER
So much for the sophomore slump. In her sophomore season, Cully was the state's leading scorer for public schools, compiling 76 points on 45 goals and 31 assists. Her unparalleled scoring ability brought Duxbury all the way to the Division 2 state semifinals, before losing to eventual state champion Westford. In 35 games with the Green Dragons during the past two years, Cully is already approaching the 100-point mark with 57 goals and 40 assists. Cully is also a three-sport athlete (lacrosse and soccer) and a high honor roll student. In the off season she plays lacrosse and hockey in the Bay State Games and enjoys snowboarding, band, and sailing.
Catherine Foley, Boston Latin
CENTER
Most juniors in high school still haven't decided what college they are going to, let alone what they want to major in -not Foley. She already knows she wants to major in sports psychology. That same kind of decisiveness and determination helped Foley become a three-time Dual County League All-Star. This season, as captain, she managed 21 goals and 17 assists and was named to the all-conference team. For years her coach and team have been aware of just how valuable Cully is. In her freshman year she was named the team's most outstanding performer and last year named the team's MVP.
Lindsey Holland, Needham
GOALIE
At 5-feet-6-inches, Holland doesn't take up much of the net, but it doesn't matter. Her lightning-quick reflexes made her a 1st team Bay State League all-star and propelled Needham to the state tournament. Last year, as a freshman, Holland brought Needham to a Division 1 state championship, giving up just four goals in four tournament games. Her goals against last year was 0.83, and this year her numbers were equally impressive as she posted a .950 save percentage. Also a member of the soccer team, Holland hopes to play hockey or soccer in college, while pursuing a degree in business. With college two years away, the honor roll student and two-time All-Scholastic has plenty of time to impress scouts.
Arden Lyons, Westford Academy
FORWARD/DEFENSE
Lyons 45 points (27 goals, 18 assists) were instrumental in Westford Academy's march to a Division 2 state championship. As a two-time Eastern Mass All-Star and two-time Dual County League All-Star, Lyons has been a leader for Westford. A versatile athlete, playing both offense and defense, Lyons is also the captain and team MVP of the lacrosse team. After a spring of lacrosse, Lyons goes back to hockey in the summer, playing for the Chelmsford Girls' Hockey Association and the CGHA Midget Tier 1 National level team. In her free time she enjoys playing alto saxophone.
Lee-J Mirasolo, Wakefield
FORWARD
Mirasolo can check off just about every accomplishment a hockey player can reach. Four-time all-star, check. 100 points, check. 200 points? Check. Wakefield's star forward has done it all, tallying 40 goals and 20 assists this season to help the Warriors reach the semifinals of the Division 1 state tournament. As captain in her junior and senior year's, Mirasolo has compiled over 200 points and has been named to the all-league team three times. While Mirasolo's leadership and performance has been impressive, it isn't limited to the ice. She is also an all-star and captain on the field hockey and softball teams and is a member of the National Honor Society.
Sarah Perry, Lincoln-Sudbury
GOALIE
Perry has three career assists - not that impressive; Unless, you consider that with her goaltending statistics, which are some of the most impressive numbers in the state. This season, Perry led Lincoln-Sudbury to the Division 1 state semifinals with a 17-3-3 record and six shutouts. Named the Dual Metro League Player of the Year and an Eastern Mass All-Star, Perry finished the season with a 1.47 goals against average. In addition to her three helpers from the crease, Perry finishes her high school career with an impressive 57-19-7 record, 20 shutouts and a 1.58 goals against average. Also a first team Dual County League All-Star in field hockey, Perry plans to play hockey competitively in college.
Colleen Sanborn, Woburn
FORWARD
No matter where you put Colleen Sanborn, she shines. Division 2 hockey, Division 1 hockey, behind the plate as a catcher for the Woburn softball team - for Sanborn it's all a platform to display her ability. After capturing the Division 2 state title last year, Woburn moved up to Division 1 this season and Sanborn continued her outstanding play, carrying the Tanners to another state championship. The leading scorer in Woburn history (boys or girls), Sanborn has netted 151 goals and 57 assists and is a four-time all-star and three-time all-league team member. As captain this season, Sanborn's 31 goals and 25 assists helped Woburn dominate its opponents throughout the tournament.
Jillian Wilkes, Dedham
DEFENSE
Wilkes is heading to Northeastern University next year to play field hockey. However, her skill on the ice is nothing to overlook. As the leader of a stifling Dedham defense, Wilkes helped the Marauders reach the Division 1 state final. While Dedham lost that game, Wilkes, a league all-star in all four seasons, has already captured two state championships in Division 2. In her four seasons with Dedham, Wilkes impact was not limited to defending her own zone. The star defenseman has managed 70 points during her career and was named the team's unsung hero for last year's championship team.
