Skiing

Skiers of the Year

Alex Zahoruiko, North Andover
BOYS
Zahoruiko was relatively new to the skiing scene this year, but he let his performances in the MIAA State Alpine Ski Championships announced his arrival. At Wachusett Mountain, the junior won the giant slalom with a time of 55.99 seconds. In the slalom, he finished second to his teammate and fellow All-Scholastic Matthew Marchegiani by less than eight-tenths of a second with time of 34.82 seconds. Zahoruiko's impressive near double championship in February coupled with Marchegiani's strong showing, lifted the Knights to a solid fifth place finish at the championship. The 6-foot 165 pound Zahoruiko is on the honor roll. He also plays both golf and lacrosse.
Ashleigh Bloomstran, Acton-Boxboro
GIRLS
Bloomstran capped her successful four-year career with a top-notch performance at the MIAA State Alpine Ski Championships at Wachusett Mountain. She finished third in the slalom with a time of 38.41 seconds, a little more than a second off the top time. The captain also led her Acton-Boxboro team to a strong 13th place finish at the state championship. Bloomstran, though, made her hay in the Dual County League where she was the overall winner and was selected to her fourth consecutive league all star team. She has been a member of the Loon Ski Team for nine years. The senior is an honor roll student and member of the National Honor Society. She wants to attend either Northeastern or Babson in the fall.

The All-Scholastics

Carrie Burns, Concord-Carlisle
NORDIC
It's said that there are two ways to be a team leader: with your words or by example. Regardless of what Burns' vocabular capabilities may be, the senior captain's performances this year were astounding. After finishing second in the Mass-Bay East League last season, she went undefeated this year and won the individual league title. She finished third at the MIAA State Alpine Championships and was a winner at the EMass relay meet. Burns is also is a member of the Concord-Carlisle varsity cross-country team. She enjoys playing the flute, rock climbing, Kokondo, and working as a waitress. She has won several departmental awards in school and other honors including the Harvard Book Award and the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award.

NORDIC
Israel was a cocaptain for a Concord-Carlisle team that was narrowly beat out by a point (459-458) by Mowhawk for the MIAA cross-country skiing state championship in February. She was a big part of the second-place finish as she was ninth in the freestyle (25.56) after an 11th-place finish last year. In the Mass Bay East League, she finished second individually and was also second at the Weston Sprints. Israel, a senior, is also a three-time letterman in cross-country running for the Patriots. She is a member of the National Honor Society and is on the high honor roll. Israel has won departmental academic awards for chemistry and spanish. She will attend New Hampshire in the fall and hopes to ski for the Wildcats.
Cecily Jones, Brookline
NORDIC
Jones established herself as the top skier in the Mass Bay East League this year after winning a second consecutive individual title and then took her talents to the MIAA cross-country skiing state championships in Worthington. The senior finished fifth in the classic race (31:05) and 30th in the freestyle (28.34). Last season, Jones finished 14th and 20th respectively. She is a member of the National Honor Society and won a Globe Scholastic Art Award for her painting as well as the Brookline High Junior English Award. Matt Brockman, Lincoln-Sudbury
ALPINE
Brockman was a standout performer on a highly successful Lincoln-Sudbury team that won its third state championship in the past four years in February. The senior finished second to Alex Zahoruiko in the giant slalom at the MIAA State Alpine Ski Championships, with a time of 56.30 seconds. He went on to finish eighth in the slalom. Brockman finished third in the Dual County League this year after winning the individual league titles in both his sophomore and junior years. After finishing second in the Dual County League last year, DeVries finished first this season and is a four-time league all-star and has won numerous team awards on a Westford squad that finished 16th in the state. Guillaume is a back-to-back individual winner in both the Mass Bay East League and EMass. The 5-foot-11-inch Guillaume also had a strong year last winter when he finished in the top 10 at the Eastern J2 Championship and was selected to his third of four consecutive Dual County League All-Star team. The junior also runs cross-country and track. Guillaume, an honor roll student, wants to ski in college - preferably at Bowdoin, Colby, or Middlebury.
Nat Jacques, Wayland
NORDIC
If there was a Free Spirit of the Year Award, Jacques would be the hands-down winner. Now a three-time All-Scholastic, Jacques has established himself as one of the top skiers in New England. This year his resume continued to grow: first in the Dual County League, first in the Weston Sprints, 10th at the state meet, 13th in sprints at the Eastern High School championships. Add to that his second-place finish at states in his sophomore year and his 17th-place finish in an injury filled junior year and his skiing accomplishments are many. As for the free spirit award, Jacques is into surfing and will attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa where he plans ``to take the surfing competition scene by storm.''
James Long, Lincoln-Sudbury
ALPINE
Long, like his teammate and fellow senior Matt Brockman, enjoyed his third state championship in his career while skiing for Lincoln-Sudbury; the Warriors were state champions is 2001 and 2002. The 5-foot-11-inch Long also runs track and plays soccer for the Warriors. Long plans to take a year off from school and then attend the University of Denver or Colorado-Boulder.
Matt Marchegiani, North Andover
ALPINE
Marchegiani had been a dominant skier in the North Shore League (for proof check his two league MVP awards in his two years of competing). This was the year that he became a top-level challenger on the state scene. At the MIAA Alpine Ski Championships at Wachusett Mountain, he won the slalom event with a time of 34.08 seconds after finishing 14th last season and 69th the season before. In the giant slalom, he slipped from his fourth-place finish in 2003 to 24th (59.50) this winter. His North Andover team also held steady at the state championship, repeating their fifth-place performance from last season. The 5-foot-11-inch Marchegiani was also an All-Scholastic selection last year. The junior plays football and lacrosse and enjoys spending time with his friends.
Jake Segal, Acton-Boxboro
ALPINE
Last year after teaming up with his brother and 2003 Globe Skier of the Year, Josh, Jake blazed his own path this season. He finished third in the giant slalom (56.34) behind Brockman and Zahoruiko and fifth in the slalom (36.65). He placed second overall in the Dual County League this season and was his team's captain. The junior is also ranked 348th in the world for his age and finished seventh overall at the J3 Junior Olympics in 2002.
