Swimmers of the Year

Pat Reams, BC High
 DIVISION 1
Reams has been a Swimmer of the Year in the making since the moment he jumped into a pool for the Eagles, with four sectional championships to his credit in the 100 butterfly, and three sectional titles in the 500 freestyle. State crowns? Reams is the current state champion in the 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, and he was a member of state championship squads in the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay for BC High. In the offseason, the 5-foot-11-inch senior also swims for the YMCA Strypers, for whom he twice won the YMCA National Championship in the 200 butterfly. He was named to the USA Scholastic All-American team and plans to attend the University of Virginia in the fall.
Eric Nilsson, Weston
 DIVISION 2
Nilsson's resume speaks for itself. He is the school record-holder in the 100, 200, and 500 freestyle, the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and the 200 individual medley. He was an All-American in the 50, 100, 200, 500 freestyle, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and the 200 individual medley. He holds state records in the 200 freestyle relay, the 400 freestyle relay, and the 200 medley relay. He holds a 64-1 dual meet record in his four years at Weston, and has been named to the All-American squad multiple times. During this year's state meet, Nilsson posted winning times of 1:39.27 in the 200 freestyle and 4:28.71 in the 400 free. Thanks to that impressive list of accomplishments, he's won a scholarship to Northwestern.

Coaches of the Year

Bob Hamblet, BC High
 DIVISION 1
The Eagles' coach led BC High to the Catholic Conference championship and an undefeated 9-0 season, the South-Central sectional title, and, eventually, the MIAA Division 1 state crown. Not bad for his first year coaching swimming in Massachusetts. "Our team had a great season," said Hamblet. "Throughout the year, we stayed focused on team goals, and won the state meet because each swimmer had a great meet. Each time we were challenged, the guys stepped up to that challenge." The Virginia Independent School Coach of the Year in 2001, he compiled a 73-2 record before coming to the Bay State. He is a native of Salem, N.H., and graduated from Georgetown University in 1989.
Katie McCully, Nauset
 DIVISION 2
McCully led the Warriors to a fine season, finishing with an 11-0 record and the Bay Colony League title. Her swimmers set five school records at the MIAA state championships, with sophomore Louie LeBart leading the way with two Nauset records. "I credit my assistant coach [Justin Bohannon] for the team's success," said McCully. "He dedicates himself to the program. We coach both the boys' and girls' teams, which can be tough when we get down to championships, sectional, and state tourney times ... we both have the same competitive drive, which allows us to work well together." When not coaching the Warriors, McCully spends her summers as a lifeguard at Nauset Beach in Orleans.

The All-Scholastics

Salvatore Barba, St. John's

Barba has been one of the state's most talented swimmers for years and this winter he added two more state titles to his already impressive resume.
