Girls' swimming
Swimmers of the Year
Molly Curran, Beverly
 DIVISION 1 |
 |
|
Curran put together a rare season for any swimmer, let alone a sophomore.
The Northeast Conference All-Star helped the Panthers to the NEC title and
a
6-0 regular-season record. Her time of 2:13.27 in the 200 individual medley
placed her first in the Division 1 state meet, while her mark of 1:08.34 in
the 100 breaststroke took the top spot as well. Curran was also a member of
the 400 freestyle relay squad, which finished first, as Beverly took home
the state team title. While swimming for the YMCA North Shore Sharks, she
was named a YMCA All-American. The NEC rookie of the year during her
freshman season, she is a standout in the classroom as well, having made
the
honor roll.

Eliza Butts, Weston
 DIVISION 2 |
 |
|
Butts helped the Wildcats to a second-place finish at the Division 2
state
championships after being named an All-American in three separate events.
She swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay squad with a split of 27.3,
helping her squad finish first in the event. Butts also took first in the
200 freestyle, finishing in 1:52.75. She then went on to take the 100 free
in 50:89, and was a member of the 400 freestyle relay, which also won
first.
Butts earned All-American and All-Scholastic status her freshman season in
the 500 freestyle. An honor roll student, she swims with the New England
Barracudas during the offseason. In her spare time, she enjoys shopping,
listening to music, and spending time with friends.

Coaches of the Year
Brian Cameron, Beverly
 DIVISION 1 |
 |
|
After guiding the Panthers to an undefeated regular season at 6-0,
Cameron
helped Beverly take second in both the Northeast Conference championship
and
the North sectionals. On the strength of that success, the Panthers came
through when it counted most, grabbing first at the Division 1 state
championship. In five years at Beverly, Cameron has put together an
impressive career record of 31-2. A graduate of Brockton High School,
Cameron was named the Northeastern Conference's Coach of the Year this
winter. During the offseason, he coaches for the YMCA's North Shore Sharks
in Beverly. When not coaching, Cameron enjoys watching baseball, reading,
and listening to music.
|

Jerry Moss, Concord-Carlisle
 DIVISION 2 |
 |
|
After an 11-year absence, Moss returns to these pages to pick up his
second All-Scholastic Coach of the Year honors following a year in which he
brought the Patriots above the .500 mark with a 5-3 record and a
third-place
finish at the Division 2 state championship. Having been a swimming coach
for 26 years, Moss has amassed a 137-127 record. A native of Montclair,
N.J., Moss graduated from Northeastern University in 1977. He played water
polo, baseball, and swam for the Huskies. He is also an assistant coach for
the New England Barracudas, and teaches water polo at the Heritage pool.
When not coaching, he enjoys reading and spending time with his 8-year-old
daughter.

.
. . and she's only a sophomore. The three-sport star has placed third in
the
state for two consecutive years and also took home second place in the Dual

impressive for any student-athlete, never mind a sophomore. Having broken
the NEC record in the 200 freestyle, Loubris translated her regular-season
success into postseason glory, taking first in both the 200 (1:58.24) and
500 free (5:17.81). Loubris was her team MVP and an NEC All-Star as a
freshman, having placed third in the 200 free at both the North sectionals
and the state championships one season ago. The high honors student is
still
undecided on her college plans and is a member of the YMCA North Shore
Sharks.

also
a Dual County League All-Star. At the Division 2 state championship, she
placed second with a score of 460 after winning the competitive DCL meet
with a 254 mark. Her regular-season personal best is 263. A member of the
National Honor Society, she is a three-sport captain, leading the squads
for

next fall, she hopes to continue to compete in diving.

star swimmer was third in the New England Seniors at Bowdoin College,

Relays
Weston

Weston was nothing short of dominant during the relays, taking home two
of
the three events. Senior captains Stephanie Wake and Kate Stookey led the
Wildcats' 200 freestyle relay, along with Maureen French, and Ellen
McCurdy,
as Weston posted a winning time of 1:42.96, beating their closest
competitors by nearly two seconds. McCurdy and French are both sophomores.
Wake, who graduates as a four-time All-Scholastic, will attend Washington
University in St. Louis. Stookey, a Dual County League All-Star and honor
roll student, is headed for the College of Charleston. McCurdy and French
are both DCL All-Stars and honor roll students. McCurdy plays soccer and
lacrosse while French competes on the Wayland/Weston crew team.
|

Weston
 200 MEDLEY |

The Wildcats rode the impressive efforts of junior Eliza Butts, junior
Kate Suominen, senior Megan McCurdy, and sophomore Maureen French to
victory
in the 200 medley, as the four posted a winning time of 1:51.98, nearly a
full second faster than their closest competitor, Gardner. At the North
sectional, Weston took second in 1:52.95. Led by the relays, Weston won the
North sectional and took second at the Division 2 state meet. Each swimmer
is impressive in the classroom as well, all having made the honor roll.
Along with Butts, McCurdy was named to the Dual County League All-Star
squad. After one more spring season of lacrosse, McCurdy will move on to
Trinity College next fall.
|

Beverly
 400 FREE |

The Panthers' Division 1 state championship effort was helped immensely
by
the 400 freestyle relay's win, pushing Beverly over the top with 32 points
in the final event. The team of Kristen Zarba, Vanessa Athanas, Molly
Curran, and Jaclyn Davidson posted a winning time of 3:41.73 in the event
to
vault the Panthers to the victory stand. The same squad managed to take
first in the 200 medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:51.95. In the
North sectional, Beverly took first in 3:40.86. The most impressive item on
the resume of this team may be the ages of the swimmers. All four will
return: Zarba and Davidson are juniors, Curran and Athanas are sophomores.
When not swimming for Beverly, each competes for the North Shore Sharks of
the YMCA.
