Boys' gymnastics
Rich Baczewski, Burlington
 COACH OF THE YEAR |
In his 19th year at Burlington as an assistant coach, Baczewski helped lead the Red Devils to a 9-0 regular-season record, an Eastern Mass. championship, and a second-place finish at the MIAA state meet. For this, he credits Burlington's strong senior leadership. ``The '05 team was a very talented and hard-working team. This was a reflection on the seniors. I will greatly miss this year's senior class.'' Baczewski graduated from Revere High in 1979 and UMass-Boston in 1983. He also coaches the boys' varsity soccer team and enjoys fishing and skiing when he is not on the field or in the gym. |

Michael Brown, Newton North
 SOPHOMORE |
One of only two boys to crack the Burlington/Braintree hold on the All-Scholastic team, Brown helped Newton North finish third at states by placing in all his events. Brown won the vault and finished third in the all-around. The 5-foot-3-inch, 135-pound sophomore was a Junior Olmypic qualifier in 2003, 2004, and 2005. Brown maintains honor roll grades with a 3.7 GPA and he is vice president of his class. His club team is the New England Sports Academy where he is coached by Levan Karakhanyan. Brown hopes to attend a Division 1 school and compete in gymnastics when he graduates from Newton North. |

Kelvin Chan, Burlington
 SENIOR |
Chan's hard work has paid off in the gym and in the classroom. The senior turned a first-place finish in rings, a fourth-place finish in parallel bars, a sixth-place finish in the high bars, and a sixth-place finish in the pommel horse into a 46.9 all-around score, good for fifth at the MIAA state team championship. Chan combined with fellow All-Scholastic Joe Gianino to lead Burlington to second place at the MIAA state team championship. Chan has maintained high honor roll grades for four years. He plays guitar and piano and plans to attend Penn State in the fall to major in engineering and compete for the school's gymnastics club team. |

Greg Ducach, Braintree
 SOPHOMORE |
Only a sophomore, Ducach has done nothing but win in his two-year career with powerhouse Braintree. The Wamps defended their MIAA state team championship, thanks to a second-place finish in the floor exercise and a fourth-place finish in the vault at states by Ducach. The Wamps are 18-1 since he joined the team and his all-around high is an impressive 44.3. Ducach, one of three Braintree All-Scholastics, maintains honor roll grades and plays soccer and baseball. He also enjoys studying physics, as well as playing Skee-Ball, and Ultimate Frisbee. |

David Ellis, Braintree
JUNIOR / GYMNAST OF THE YEAR |
Three, two, one: That's the path Ellis followed at states on his way to being named the Gymnast of the Year. As a freshman, he finished third at the MIAA state team final. In 2004, he finished second behind three-time champion Jason Shen of Newton North. This year he won it all with an all-around score of 53.7. Ellis finished first in the floor, pommel horse, high bar, and the vault, where he set a school record with a score of 9.5. Only a junior, he has won three team state championships with the Wamps, and also holds the school record in the floor with a 9.5. Ellis is an honor roll student with a 3.85 GPA. He trains at Ellis School of Gymnastics, owned by his father and aunt. |

Joe Gianino, Burlington
 FRESHMAN |
For college plans, Gianino lists Michigan, a pretty lofty goal for a freshman, but he has the resume to back it up. In his first year of high school competition, Gianino compiled an all-around score of 48.4 at the MIAA state team final, good for fourth place. He scored an 8.8 in the pommel horse at states and set a school record with a 9.5 in the same event. At states, he also finished fifth in the high bars with an 8.0, sixth in the parallel bars with an 8.0, and fourth in the floor exercise with an 8.8. The honor roll student also enjoys playing tennis. |

Matt Lincoln, Attleboro
 SENIOR |
Lincoln closed out his high school career with a bang, but it was his performance in the classroom that earned him the free ride Lincoln earned an MCAS scholarship which entitles him to free tuition at any state school and he plans to attend Springfield College and compete on the Division 2 gymnastics team. This season, he finished first in the high bar and vault at the Salem Invitational and third in the high bar and vault at states, where he finished sixth in the all-around. For his performance, he was named state Senior Gymnast of the Year. |

Matthew Tocchio, Braintree
 SENIOR |
Because his name falls last alphabetically, it is easy to refer to Tocchio as Braintree's third All-Scholastic, but his accomplishments put him on the top of most lists. The two-time All-Scholastic has been a member of three state championship winning squads and was named Gymnast of the Year at the Salem Invitational after winning the all-around competition. At the state team championships, he finished first in the parallel bars, second in the floor exercise, second in the pommel horse, second in the high bar, fifth in the vault, and fifth in the rings. His high school career has included 27 wins and only one loss and he was the Paul Hanson Award winner as a sophomore. |
Girls' gymnastics
Diane Blume, Reading
 COACH OF THE YEAR |
Diane Blume es una gran maestra en el salon y en el gimnasio. Since taking over at Reading three years ago, Blume's teams have improved every year. In her first year, the Rockets finished the regular season 4-3, but followed with two straight undefeated regular seaons. In 2004, the Rockets went 7-0 and finished third at states, with Blume taking home Middlesex League coach of the year honors. This season, the Rockets again finished 7-0 and this time, they placed second at states. This year's squad also broke all Middlesex League event and all-around records, and broke the state record Jan. 11 with 145.2 points, before breaking it again two weeks later with 146.6. Blume, a Spanish teacher, is a 1992 graduate of the University of New Hampshire. |

Chloe Banks, Danvers
 SENIOR |
After a one-year hiatus, Banks is back for her third go-around as an All-Scholastic. The high honor roll student was the captain of the NEC/CAL, North Sectional, and state champion Falcons. Banks finished fourth in the all-around at the state individual meet and is a member of the 2005 Senior National Team. Banks took home the championship in the bars at the NEC/CAL championship meet and is an Adams Scholarship winner. She also competes with the Yellow Jackets Gymnastics Club coached by Don Lothrop and is a three-time Bay State Games champion. She has twice been named a Danvers Touchdown Club student-athlete. She plans to attend Ithaca College or Penn State in the fall. |

Melissa Bowe, Barnstable
 SOPHOMORE |
Not one to let her youth get in the way, Bowe has accomplished a lot for a sophomore. She set the school record in the bars with a 9.45, and then went on to finish second in the all-around at the league meet. At the MIAA state final, Bowe was fourth in the all-around with a 36.675. In the Mass State Level 9 meet, she finished first in the bars and third in the all-around. When she is not competing, Bowe teaches a recreational gymnastics class at Cape Cod Gymnastics. She also helped lead the Red Raiders to a third-place finish at states after winning the state team title her freshman year. The honor roll student also enjoys sailing, tennis, and skiing. |

Ericca Castagna, Masconomet
 JUNIOR |
Also a cheerleader, Castagna is both the captain and the MVP of the Chieftains' gymnastics team. The two-time NEC/CAL All-Star finished seventh in the all-around competition at the state individual championships with a 36.625 and took home a state championship title on the vault at the level 9 USAG State Championships. Led by Castagna, Masconomet posted a 136.40 at the North sectional, good enough for fifth place. Castagna trains year-round at the Yellow Jackets Gymnastics club in Middleton and competed in the AAU Junior Olympics. |

Chelsea Depot, Attleboro
 SENIOR |
The senior captain was busy this year. Between training at O'Leary's Gymnastics Center, competing in the AAU Junior Olympics this summer, and maintaining high honor roll grades, she managed to find time to break three school records. Depot is the school recordholder in the vault (9.5), the bars (9.525), and the all-around with a 37.3. A four-year competitor in the all-around at states, Depot is also a member of both the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society. Depot, a National Team member, will choose between the University of Rhode Island, Southern Connecticut State, and Springfield College. |

Briana DiPinto, Woburn
 JUNIOR |
DiPinto's high school resume is already full and she has another year to add to it. The junior has a level 9 state championship under her belt and added a third-place finish in the all-around at this year's MIAA state championship with a 37.225. DiPinto helped the Tanners to a second-place finish in the Middlesex League, breaking the school's all-around record three times in the process with a 37.225. She also holds the school records in the bars with a 9.5 and the beam with a 9.6. DiPinto will be competing at level 10 in USA Gymnastics and is an honor roll student in the top 15 percent of her class at Woburn. She trains at Northeast Gymnastics in Tewksbury. |

Jacqui Mazzola, Framingham
 SENIOR |
Despite being a two-time All-Scholastic, Mazzola always seems to be concerned with others. She is a volunteer for the Special Olympics and ``Why Me'' program for children who have cancer. When asked to list her accomplishments, she wrote ``Bay State League co-senior of the year with my friend Nicole Visnick.'' Mazzola is no slouch individually, having set the school record in the vault with a 9.725 and sixth at the all-around at the state individuals. Mazzola captured the championship in the vault at states and is the Bay State League all-around and vault champion. The Senior National Team member is an honor roll student at Framingham. She plans to attend Springfield College to major in recreational management and compete with the gymnastics team. |

Kim O'Donnell, Reading
SOPHOMORE / GYMNAST OF THE YEAR |
Where does O'Donnell go from here? As a sophomore, she finished first at the states in individual all-around with a 38.0 and the beam with a 9.625, and finished first in all-around at MIAA team state championship with a 37.775. She holds the school record in the bars with a 9.8, the beam with a 9.7, and the all-around with a 38.4, which is also a Middlesex League record, for which she was named a Middlesex League All-Star in the all-around. She was also the Middlesex champion in the bars, vault, and the all-around. The high honor roll student placed first in all-around East/Central Sectionals in 2004, and third at all-around individual states that same year. |

Taylor See, Stoneham
 FRESHMAN |
``There isn't much See didn't do for Stoneham this season. She broke school records in every event this season.'' This description was written in last year's All-Scholastic section about See's sister, Danielle, and now the same sentences can be used to describe Taylor, who broke all her sister's records and helped her team break the all-around record that had stood for nine years. And she's only a freshman. See also played for Stoneham's undefeated soccer team (12-0-1) and plays at World of Soccer. A Middlesex League All-Star, she enjoys shopping and hanging out with her friends when she is not breaking school records. |

Rebecca Silva, Reading
 FRESHMAN |
This year Reading was undefeated at 7-0, won the Middlesex League title, the East/Central Sectional, and finished second at the MIAA state meet. With freshmen like Silva, the team should be making room in the trophy case for future prizes. Silva won the floor championships at sectionals with a 9.5, is the Middlesex League floor champion, and holds the school record with a 9.75. She finished fifth in all-around at the state individual meet with a 37.175 and third in the all-around at the state team championship. She is also a USAG level 10 competitor at Gymnastics and More and a high honor roll student with a 4.14 GPA. |

Elise Stanley, Danvers
 SENIOR |
After taking a year off from high school competition, Stanley returned this winter to earn All-Scholastic honors and lead Danvers to a record-setting season. Stanley was named the Mass Girls' Gymnastics Coaches Association Senior Gymnast of the Year and NEC/CAL MVP for the second time as she led the Falcons to a state championship. At the state individual meet, she finished second in the floor exercise with a 9.55 and was selected to the Senior National team that will compete in Orlando in May. At the state team meet in which Danvers posted a winning score of 145.675, Stanley was eighth in the all-around. At the North sectionals, she finished first in the beam with a 9.1 and won the floor exercise at the NEC/CAL League meet with a 9.65. |

Allison Szatek, Barnstable
 SOPHOMORE |
The sophomore is 2 for 2 in All-Scholastic selections, with good reason. A year after setting the school record in the balance beam and floor exercise, she finished first in the floor exercise at the state individual meet with a 9.6 and fourth on the beam with a 9.5. She also broke her own records in the beam with a 9.6 and the floor with a 9.65 and broke the school record in the all-around with a 37.30. She is going to level 9 states for USA Gymnastics and enjoys surfing and snowboarding in her free time. She also led Barnstable to a South sectional championship and a third-place finish at states. At the state meet, Szatek was seventh in the all-around. She is an honor roll student and holds a position on the student council. |
