Runner of the Year

senior / pentathlon

Andrew Powell, St. John's (Shrewsbury)

Powell capped his high school career by winning the state pentathlon with 3,504 points and winning the high jump and hurdles at the CMass meet. He set two CMass meet records (6 feet 7 inches in the high jump, 7.83 seconds in the hurdles).

Coaches of the Year

Division 1

Ed McGuinn, St. John's (Shrewsbury)

McGuinn’s team had a banner year, finishing 11-0 in dual meets and claiming the Central Massachusetts crown. McGuinn, in his sixth year, led his team to the Tri-County title and a runner-up finish in the All- Class meet.
Division 2

Joseph Curran, Woburn

Curran’s 4 x 400 relay team finished first in the nation at the National Scholastic Indoor Championship in New York City after winning the All-State, Division 2, and State Coaches’ meets. Woburn went 9-0 to win the Middlesex League.
Division 3

Jose Ortega, O'Bryant

In his 15th year of coaching, Ortega led his team to a 4-1 record and its fifth straight City League indoor title. Ortega, who has amassed 170 wins as a head coach, also led the O’Bryant girls’ team to a 6-0 record and its 14th straight league title.
Division 4

George McCabe, East Bridgewater

McCabe has an all-time record of 36-10 and is already a member of the MSTCA Hall of Fame. The East Bridgewater High alum (class of 1965) coached his alma mater to a 5-1 record and the Division 4 relay championship this season.

All-Scholastics

junior / mile

Omar Aden, Charlestown

Aden made a significant impact this season, finishing fourth in the mile (4:13.70) at the National Scholastic Indoor Championship. The junior also won the All-State meet and the Division 2 title, while going undefeated in the City League.
junior / 600 meters

Ryad Bencheikh, Woburn

An integral cog in the nation’s best 4 x 400 team, Bencheikh also dominated the 600 this season, running away with the All-State and Division 2 titles. Only a junior, he’ll be back to try to defend his and Woburn’s titles next season.
senior / hurdles

Chris Conway, Bishop Feehan

Conway dominated almost every hurdles event this season. He finished first in the New England Championships and the State Coaches’ Elite meet, set a meet record (7.49) at the EAC championship, and won the Division 3 meet for the third time.
senior / 2 mile

Robert Gibson, Brookline

Gibson, the mile state champion as a junior, capped his senior season in style, winning the 2-mile title by almost three seconds, 9:26.71. Gibson was the Division 1 Runner of the Year in cross-country after winning the All-State title.
junior / 300 meters

Jimm Guerrier, Brockton

A three-year varsity athlete, Guerrier serves as the anchor for Brockton’s 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay teams. Only a junior, he finished second in the 300 at the All-State meet and had an impressive time of 35.91 seconds in the event this season.
sophomore / 55 meters

Chris McConnell, Andover

McConnell went undefeated en route to winning the state championship in the event. McConnell also boasted victories in the Division 1 meet, the MVC championship, the Coaches’ Elite meet, the All-State meet, and finished third in New England.
senior / shot put

Mike McPherson, Mansfield

The senior was the All-State champion in the shot put and was victorious at the State Coaches’ meet and Division 2 championships as well. McPherson finished third in New England and boasts a throw of 58 feet this season.
junior / long jump

Enoch Mills, Boston English

Mills impressed at the All-State meet this year, winning the title with a jump of 22 feet 2OE inches. Mills was the only underclassman to finish in the top 10 in the event. He was also second at the All-State meet in the 55-meter dash.
senior / 1,000 meters

Brett Sullivan, Woburn

A four-time All-Scholastic, Sullivan was the All-State champion in the 1,000 this season, finishing in 2:30.01. He also was victorious at the State Coaches’ Elite meet and served as the anchor for Woburn’s best-inthe- nation 4 x 400 relay team.
junior / 55 hurdles

Corey Thomas, BC High

Thomas was a double threat for BC High, performing well in the hurdles and high jump. Thomas won both at the State Coaches’ Elite meet and at the Dartmouth Relays, then capped his stellar season with a victory in the hurdles at the All-State meet.

4x200 meters

Reading

Reading’s 4 x 200 team, featuring seniors (from left) Ian O’Shea, Kevin Meleshuk, Steve Comis, and Tom DiNatale, brought home the state title and turned in the best performance in school history this season. In a close race at the All-State meet, the Rockets beat Woburn by two-100ths of a second, finishing in a meet-record 1:30.56, the best finish for any Reading 4 x 200 team. The Rockets were also second in the 4 x 200 at the Division 2 meet.
4x400 meters

Woburn

It’s not often that Massachusetts can boast a relay team as talented as Woburn’s runners. The team of All-Americans (from left) Mike McDonough, Dan Tobin, Ryad Bencheikh, and Brett Sullivan was the best in the nation in its event, winning at the National Scholastic Indoor Championship with a time of 3 minutes 19.16 seconds. The performance capped a season in which the foursome finished first in the All-State and Division 2 meets.
4x800 meters

Gloucester

Despite having only one member (Liam Anastasia- Murphy) returning from last season, the Gloucester 4 x 800 team is an All-Scholastic winner for the second straight time. The team was dominant, winning the McIntyre Elite meet, the Division 2 relays, and the All-State Championships (8:01.79). The team members — (from left) Austin Sousa, Alex Trotsky, Andrew Ryan, and Anastasia-Murphy — are all honors students.
