Gymnasts of the Year

senior / all-around

Joe Gianino, Burlington

The four-time All-Scholastic set school records in the floor (9.8) and pommel horse (9.7) this season. He won the floor, pommel horse, high bar, parallel bars, and all-around at the State Meet to carry Burlington to first place.
senior / all-around

Alison Carr, Chelmsford

Carr won the all-around at the Coaches’ Invitational and the State Meet in being named the Globe’s Gymnast of the Year for the second time. Carr helped her team finish second at the State Meet. She also runs track (school record in the triple jump).

Coaches of the Year

boys

Steve Sirois, Lowell

As coach of both Andover and Lowell, Sirois led Lowell to a fourth-place finish at the state meet and Andover to a sixth-place finish. He has been coaching for 29 years and also enjoys fishing. Sirois was a gymnast at Andover, graduating in 1973.
girls

Laura Murphy, Case/Seekonk

Murphy and her team made their first appearance at the State Meet this year, finishing eighth after a fourth-place showing in the South Sectional. Murphy’s team compiled a 5-1 record in only her second year coaching the sport.

Boys All-Scholastics

junior

Zachery Aguiar, Lowell

Aguiar finished second in the floor, pommel horse, and high bar, and tied for first place on rings at the State Meet. Voted team MVP, he took first place on rings and parallel bars at the Coaches’ Invitational. Aguiar is a National Honor Society member.

Aaron Davidovits, Andover

The senior captain finished second in the all-around at the Coaches’ Invitational, and fourth in the allaround at the State Meet to help Andover to a sixth-place finish. Davidovits is a high honors student and is interested in computers.

Veasna Dethcan, Revere

Dethchan, a team captain, finished first in the all-around at the Coaches’ Invitational. He earned Gymnast of the Year at the State Meet, where he finished second in the parallel bars and third in the all-around, helping Revere to a third-place finish.

Daniel Gale, Attleboro

Gale finished fifth in the all-around at the State Meet and fifth in the allaround at the Salem Invitational Meet. A member of the National Honor Society, Gale plans to major in fire science at Bristol Community College in the fall.

Dan Gubb, Newton South

Gubb ended his Newton South career on a high note, finishing eighth in the all-around at the State Meet to help lead the Lions to a seventh-place finish. Gubb also enjoys football, baseball, and hockey, and plays the trumpet.

Blake Ellis, Braintree

At the State Meet, Ellis finished first on the rings and vault, second in the all-around, third on the floor, high bar, and pommel horse, and fourth on the parallel bars to lead Braintree to a second-place finish. He also plays soccer.

John Ellis, Braintree

At the State Meet, Ellis finished first on the rings and vault, second in the all-around, third on the floor, high bar, and pommel horse, and fourth on the parallel bars to lead Braintree to a second-place finish. He also plays soccer.
freshman

Ryan Hynes, Braintree

Only a freshman, Hynes finished sixth all-around in the State Meet as Braintree took second. He also took gold in the Male Cadet A division at the Bay States. In addition to gymnastics, he plays hockey and soccer, and enjoys drumming.

Kasey Shields, Burlington

The senior captain helped lead the Red Devils to the state championship. At the State Meet, he finished fourth in the floor (8.9), fifth in the vault (8.6), and fifth in the rings (7.8). The National Honor Society member will attend Springfield College.

Janis Konkle, Acton-Boxboro

This rookie won Dual County League Gymnast of the Year and Freshman of the Year honors and broke school records in the vault, bars, beam, and all-around. She finished third in the Coaches’ Invitational and third in the State Meet as A-B finished fifth.
sophomore

Erin Machado, Case

Machado helped Case/Seekonk make its first ever appearance in the State Meet by placing first all-around in the Sectional Meet. She also finished third in the Cranberry Conference all-around competition. Machado enjoys camping and skiing.

Laura Malicia, Barnstable

The talented senior was a Cranberry Conference All-Star for the second year in a row and helped Barnstable repeat as state champions. Malicia, who will attend either UMass or Florida International, is a qualifier for the Senior National Team.

Abigail Moreira, Danvers

The senior captain finished seventh in the all-around at the State Meet as Danvers came in third overall. An NEC/CAL All-Star, National High School Team member, and National Honor Society member, she plans to major in education in college.

Leah Pacheco, Barnstable

In her two seasons, Pacheco has helped lead Barnstable to back-toback state championships. The Cranberry Conference All-Star was on the team that set the State Meet record (148.25) last year. Pacheco is an honor roll student.

Ashley Paulsen, Framingham

The Bay State League Gymnast of the Year took first in the balance beam and second all-around at the league meet. She finished seventh allaround at the Coaches’ Invitational. Paulsen is a Level 10 gymnast for USA Gymnastics.

Morgan Pickett, Swampscott

The Bay State League Gymnast of the Year took first in the balance beam and second all-around at the league meet. She finished seventh allaround at the Coaches’ Invitational. Paulsen is a Level 10 gymnast for USA Gymnastics.

Melanie Plante, Attleboro

The Bay State League Gymnast of the Year took first in the balance beam and second all-around at the league meet. She finished seventh allaround at the Coaches’ Invitational. Paulsen is a Level 10 gymnast for USA Gymnastics.

Lindsey Robinson, Case

This talented junior finished sixth in the all-around at the State Championships, leading her team to an eighth-place finish. She also plays field hockey and is planning on competing in gymnastics at the collegiate level.

Taylor See, Stoneham

The four-time Globe All-Scholastic finished second in the all-around at the Coaches’ Invitational. She was the Middlesex League champion in the all-around, vault, bars, beam, and floor. She also plays soccer and will study nursing in college.

Kady Sullivan, Walpole

Sullivan was the Bay State League champion in the all-around and vault in leading Walpole to the league title. She also finished third in the allaround at the South Sectionals. Sullivan holds all scoring records at Walpole.

Samantha Whiffen, Sharon

Whiffen finished fourth in the allaround at the State Meet and sixth in the all-around at the Coaches’ Invitational. She won Hockomock League MVP honors and was named to the Senior National Team. She will attend Ithaca in the fall.

Lexi Zonfrelli, Bridgewater-Raynham

The senior captain and three-time Globe All-Scholastic finished fifth in the all-around, third on the beam, and fourth on the vault at the Coaches’ Invitational. The vice president of the National Honor Society is sixth in her class with a 4.49 GPA.
