Swimmers of the Year

division 1 / senior / 50 freestyle

Casey Ostrander, Barnstable

Ostrander finished first in the Division 1 state meet in the 50 freestyle (24.31) and second in the 100 backstroke (58.81) to end an outstanding career in which she set three south sectional records. She will move on to Bryant University this fall.
division 2 / senior / 200 freestyle

Olivia Blahut, Wayland

When it comes to the 200 freestyle, Blahut can’t be stopped. A two-time Dual County League all-star in the event, she won the individual 200 free at the Division 2 state meet and was also a member of Wayland’s championship 200 free relay team.

Coaches of the Year

division 1

Tim Kelly, North Attleboro

His Red Rocketeers finished the year with an 8-1 record and a Hockomock League title. Just more of the same for Kelly, who in eight seasons at the helm of his hometown team has led North Attleboro to a 63-12-1 record and five league championships.
division 2

Jay Craft, Duxbury

A former college All-American and Olympic trials swimmer, Craft has continued his success around the pool as a coach. This season, he led Duxbury to a 8-0 record and a Patriot League championship, boosting his career mark to 115-12.

All-Scholastics

sophomore / diving

Sloane Brazina, Concord-Carlisle

After finishing second at the North sectional meet, Brazina took home first place at the Division 1 state meet with a score of 476. The sophomore is also the 2008 AAU national champion in 1-meter diving and a USA Zone A champion in the 3-meter.
junior / 200 freestyle

Anna Cavanaugh, Barnstable

Cavanaugh set a Division 1 south record in the 200 freestyle (1:53.89) and followed that up at the state meet with another first-place finish in the event (1:54.86). She was also a member of Barnstable’s second-place 200 medley relay team.
junior / diving

Katy Feng, Westford Academy

After three years of diving at the high school level, Feng is already a threetime North sectional champion and a two-time Division 1 state champion. This season, the junior finished first at the North sectional (508.25) and second at the state meet (450).
senior / 100 butterfly

Christina Hurley, Lincoln-Sudbury

Hurley was the North sectional champion in the 100 butterfly in 58.01. A week later at the state meet, she virtually duplicated the feat, finishing second in 58.02. Hurley’s efforts helped lead L-S to the Division 1 team title.
senior / 100 breaststroke

Katie Karlson, Wayland

Karlson, who holds the school record in the 100 butterfly, broke her own record this year in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.50). Also a member of Wayland’s state champ 200 medley relay team, she will continue her career at Connecticut College.
senior / 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke

Annie Lindland, Hamilton-Wenham

Call her the comeback kid. After a two-year hiatus, Lindland capped her return to the pool in memorable fashion at this year’s Division 2 State meet, finishing first in the 100 backstroke (1:00.30) and second in the 100 butterfly (58.32).
junior / 500 freestyle

Colleen McCormack, Arlington Catholic

The Catholic Central League MVP continued her hot streak at the Division 2 State championships, winning the 500 freestyle in 5:12.74. McCormack is the CCL record-holder in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and is also a YMCA national All-American.
senior / 200 IM

Kelly O'Connor, Beverly

To say that she left her mark on the Northeast Conference would be an understatement. O’Connor was the league MVP and NEC champion in both the 200 IM and 100 backstroke, and also ran cross country, where she was a four-time league MVP.
junior / 100 freestyle

Caroline Santinelli

Santinelli is the Lincoln-Sudbury record-holder and Division 1 state champion in the 100 freestyle (52.92) and was a member of Lincoln-Sudbury’s state record-setting 200 freestyle relay team. L-S won the Division 1 team title as well.

Michelle Walcker, North Andover

Walcker swept the North sectionals and the Division 1 state meet with nearly identical times in the 100 breaststroke, winning in 1:09.43 and 1:09.42, respectively. She’s also a YMCA national and a US Zones qualifier.

Relays

200 freestyle

Wayland

Wayland successfully defended its Division 2 state title in the event as Olivia Blahut stepped in for the graduated Priscilla Wright to join Emily Downs, Michelle Cunningham, and Emily Wright. They won in a state-record 1:37.02. Each relay team member had individual success as well: Blahut and Downs had first-place finishes at the DCL meet, and Cunningham and Wright were DCL all-stars. 200 medley

Wayland

This group will graduate only one senior from a team that finished first (1:50.31) in the Division 2 state meet. While Katie Karlson will be tough to replace, the Lady Warriors appear the team to beat next season. Sophomores Valerie Eisenson and Emily Downs are high honor roll students, and Wright, a junior, is a three-time Dual County League All-Star. The team received All-American consideration for their times. (Photo: The members of Wayland’s 200 medley relay team, from L-R, Katie Karlson, Emily Downs, Emily Wright, and Valerie Eisenson.)
400 freestyle

Lincoln-Sudbury

This group of underclassmen completed the Triple Crown in the 400 freestyle, placing first in the Dual County League meet, the North sectionals, and the Division 1 state meet. Their time of 3:35.13 at the Division 1 championships was 6 seconds faster than the runner-up. The team holds both DCL and North sectional records in the event.
