St. John's of Shrewsbury's Bob Foley tied the New England record for wins by a high school boys' basketball coach with a 76-61 triumph over St. Peter-Marian last night at Worcester.
Foley tied the mark of 659 held by Skip Karam, the legendary Durfee High coach from 1960-95. Foley will have his first shot at breaking the record tomorrow night as the Laska Classic tournament continues at Assumption College.
The 65-year-old Foley has been coaching for 44 years, and has a career record of 659-276. He has been at St. John's of Shrewsbury since 1980, after stints at Uxbridge and St. Peter's.
Foley has posted winning records 34 of the last 35 seasons.
KSA Classic: Despite 19 points and 14 rebounds from Sam Herrick, No. 9 Duxbury (2-3) fell to Freedom High of Orlando, 57-54 . . . No. 4 New Bedford got 30 points and 11 assists from guard Brian Rudolph in an 89-68 win over Woodstock, Ga.
Mayflower: Sacred Heart remained unbeaten, as it rolled over Bristol Aggie, 74-44. The Saints were led by the backcourt duo of Tyler Hebret (26 points) and Jon Schreiber (14 assists).
Wilmington Holiday Tournament: Senior guard Dan Trahan poured in a career-high 31 points as Burlington ran past Revere, 80-65.
Girls' basketball
Boverini-Lynn Tournament: No. 20 Lynn Classical (4-1) handed Lynn Tech (3-1) its first loss of the season, 53-25. Classical's Meaghan Reddy had 11 points.
Canton Holiday Classic: Senior Jenny Champney (21 points, 10 rebounds) helped Bedford (3-1) hand Coyle-Cassidy (5-1) its first loss of the season, 41-27.
Peabody Invitational: Kalie Judd tallied 12 points in No. 4 Peabody's win over Notre Dame of Worcester, 59-23.
Nonleague: No. 9 Braintree cruised past unranked Brockton, 74-59, behind Brittney Chappron's 16 points and six assists . . . Shae Fitzpatrick (21 points) set a school record of 1,359 career points, as Lynnfield beat Wakefield, 45-42.
Boys' hockey
Mt. St. Charles Tournament: In a match of unbeaten teams, No. 2 Catholic Memorial prevailed over LaSalle, 4-1.
East Boston Savings Bank Frozen Tournament: Brendan Hamilton scored the winner with 58 seconds left in overtime of the championship game to lead Swampscott past Rockport, 4-3. Pope John beat East Boston, 7-3, in the consolation game.
Girls' hockey
Catholic Central: Senior Nicky Ouellette had three goals and two assists as Archbishop Williams (2-2) beat Notre Dame of Hingham, 5-1.
Mt. St. Charles Tournament: Austin Prep captain Anna Rigano (two goals, one assist) scored her 100th career goal in a 9-2 victory over Burrillville.
